Practice Notes: 10-31

The Sonics today staged a very intense but sometimes sloppy scrimmage to end their practice. Players were extremely animated with some very choice words for officials. It was hard to tell that it was just a practice with guys yelling “3 seconds” on every single possession and demanding calls when none were made. In particular Danny Fortson and Mateen Cleaves had issues with Fortson screaming “You’re (messing) with the game man!” (No he did not say messing…) repeatedly to end the day.

While the scrimmage was fairly uneventful it was my first chance to see Vitaly Potapenko playing with the starting lineup as he began the game matched up against Robert Swift. Swift seemed to struggle in the match up and was pulled early in favor of Nick Collison.

The day’s strongest performer had to be Flip Murray who was brilliant on offense scoring with drives to the lane, a mid-range jumper, and one three point bomb. In addition Flip distributed the ball well and seemed to demonstrate why the coaches have faith in him to step up as the third guard. After practice coach Bob Weiss commented on Flip Murray

“He’s going to get the opportunity. He had a great practice today.” Said Weiss who also confirmed his confidence in Murray to play the point and orchestrate the pick and roll offense.

QUOTE OF THE DAY.

“Weak-Ass Move Johan…Weak-ass move.” Assistant Coach Bob Hill after Johan Petro failed to convert a 3 foot hook shot.
