Seattle Supersonics NBA Trade Deadline Rumors

Brook Lopez, Jahlil Okafor and Jim McIlvaine?

Okay they are no rumors of anything to report. Why should people with teams get to have all the fun, amirite!?

What’s your favorite trade in Sonics history? What’s the worst trade in Sonics history? What’s the trade that almost happened that should have happened?

Let’s reminisce a little bit.

Like trading the Celtics the #2 overall pick in 1986 for Gerald Henderson. That pick ended up being Len Bias (GO TERPS!) and yes he ended up dying a few days later, but who knows what would have happened if we teamed him up with Dale Ellis. Ummmm.... Let’s move on.

We all know the Olden Polynice for Scottie Pippen draft day trade in the following year. Then we wrote about the almost happened Shawn Kemp-Pippen trade. I’m still not out of that “What-if” rabbit hole.

In 1993 we send Eddie Johnson, Dana Barros and a first to Charlotte for Kendall Gill and a first. I used to make fun of Gill because of migraine headaches, but he’s off the list. I went to the hospital six times in the last year because of them. That first round pick we got from Charlotte ended up being Carlos Rogers. I can’t find anything on what became of the pick we sent to Charlotte. It probably became Kobe Bryant somehow (I know it didn’t).

Ricky Pierce for Sarunas Marciulionis anyone? Carlos Rogers was part of that trade. So was Byron Houston.

We know how Kemp for Baker ended up for all parties involved. We wasted the remainder of Gary Payton’s prime with a wasted Vin Baker! Gah!

Where do you stand on the Payton for Ray Allen trade? That might be the biggest trade in Sonics’ history.

What am I missing? What do you guys got?

Ray Ray trade was a steal

G.P. left that summer to sign with the Lakers. The Bucks were then left with Desmond Mason. Meanwhile, we got Ray, Ridnour (pick) & Flip Murray in the deal. I’d say that was a win.

Brent Barry

for Hawkins was a shrewd move as well.

You know what would be fun?

Having the sonics back!!

Amen to that!!!

Big Smooth

For Benoit Benjamin and Doug Christie

detlef for Mckey

Benjamin for Perk...

… was exactly what I came in here to say.
That trade was sheer robbery on our part. The fact that it was the Lakers made it even sweeter.

Maybe the worst?

Lenny Wilkins to The Cadavers (Cavaliers) for Butch Beard. We cheered the whole game for Cleveland when Lenny made his first return!

Remember that one good game Moochie Norris had for the Sonics?

That was fun. 4-4 from 3pt.

Ah, Moochie…one of the few bright spots in an otherwise terrible lockout year.

I was at that game

This trade won the Sonics the championship

Getting Paul Silas and Marvin Webster (plus an over-the-hill Willie Wise, who the Sonics cut) from Denver for Bobby Wilkerson and Tom Burleson and a 2nd round draft choice. Webster played only a year for the Sonics (but it was a very fine year) but due to his leaving for the Knicks the Sonics received a compensatory player (this was before true free agency was allowed in the NBA) who turned out to be Lonnie Shelton.

So the Sonics on net were down a center, but filled that position with a better center in Jack Sikma. They were down a defensive guard but filled that position with a better one in Dennis Johnson. And they acquired a starting power forward and a backup power forward who was like a second 6th man for them.

I was crushed when they traded Tom Burleson

My dad met him on a golf course and got a picture with him (polaroid!). My dad is all of 5’4", literally two feet shorter than Tom. He was holding his putter in the picture, and it was nearly as tall as my dad.

It worked out well for the Sonics though, and me and my dad watching back-to-back Championship runs remains one of my all-time favorite memories, esp. when we brought it home. It’s a foundation for my Sonics passion to this day.

Hurry up Seattle and bring this team back!

Gary Payton

Here’s a little known fact about the 1990 Gary Payton pick.

The Sonics actually traded that pick in the 89 draft to Golden State for the 89 1st rd pick that turned out to be Dana Barros.

Seattle then traded Alton Listor a month later and re-acquired the ’90 pick and drafted GP.

So not only did Alton give us the Lister blister but he also got us GP

Can't remember if this was trade deadline or not...

Dale Ellis for Al Wood might be my all-time favorite trade.

Trades that bring up names like Ricky Sobers, Olden Polynice or Paul Westphal is akin to asking Trail Blazers fans "How are Sam Bowie & Greg Oden doing?"

While it wasn't a trade

One of our better moves was NOT resigning Jerome "Big Snacks" James.

Pick the Sonics sent to Charlotte for Kendall Gill

According to Kendall’s profile on Basketball Reference was used to draft Sharone Wright.

Is it too late to trade

Seattle politicians with Sacramento?
