Today the Seattle Storm announced they have traded away back-up guard Renee Montgomery and next year's 2nd round pick to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for Monica Wright.
Renee Montgomery was averaging 7.1 PPG and 3.0 Assists this season for the Storm as the back-up PG. While she led the team in scoring 3 times this year, she did struggle to lead the offense at times.
With Monica Wright, the Storm add some more height to the guard position at 5' 10" compared to Montgomery's smaller 5'7" frame. This should help the team more on defense. Wright has a career average of 7.9 PPG, but this season she's struggled due to injury; only playing in 7 games and averaging just 2.1 PPG. Wright just recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and is out indefinitely. It is unclear if she will play with the Storm this season or will be forced to sit out the 2nd half.
The Storm are also giving up what is expected to be a high 2nd round draft pick next year in what should be a pretty deep draft. However, 2nd round picks often have a very difficult time making teams in the WNBA and the Storm must have felt comfortable enough picking up Wright to part with the extra draft pick.
Well Storm fans, what do you think? Do you expect Wright to come back this season and make an impact on this young team trying to make the playoffs? Are you sad to see Renee Montgomery leave after her short time with the Storm? Let us know in the comments section.
