It seems as though David Stern doesn't like Seattle very much? His actions in guiding Sacramento's hands in this process is obviously clear to anyone paying attention to this soap opera. The truth of the matter is that David Stern is actually working for the owners best interest. My theory towards this stay or relocate drama has some twist and turn? I'm sure we all remember 2008, when the NBA had an ugly separation/ divorce exit in Seattle that forever damaged, black eyed the commissioner's legacy as the head of the league. David Stern could have been sympathetic to a fan base like Seattle who had a 41 year relationship with the NBA, but instead chose to show his frustration towards the State legislator who spurned him like he was a nobody. Stern failed in Seattle, he didn't act like a Commissioner should act, Instead he acted just like the immature ball players they where trying to mold to be professionals.
It has been 5 years and a few days in counting since the Sonics left Seattle for OKC. The dislike for David Stern is as strong now as it is in 2008 nothing has changed. Our political climate had change quite a bit since then, and we have a new champion in Chris Hansen, who started with a dream to own his favorite team, the Seattle Supersonics, with the help of two other local investors , the Billionaire Steve Ballmer and the two Nordstrom brothers.
David Stern knows exactly what's at stake in this fight for the Kings franchise, He has to be very careful, cautious in what he says. Being hated by one city is one thing, to be hated by another is a real black eye in his legacy as a Commissioner, so he is playing this safe .
What appears to be a one sided preference in favor of Sacramento could just be for show. I believe that David Stern learned from his past mistake. Stern will act as though he does not want to move the Kings franchise to Seattle, but in reality, Seattle has the TV market, the healthy economy, the fan base, and the corporate businesses to be one of the more successful franchises in the NBA.
The real reasons behind this move is monetary. Like Jerry McGuire said in that movie "Show me the Money" The Hansen group is doing exactly that. By the time they get done with this whole transaction the Seattle group will spend a Billion dollars. The 32 owners in the league will be dividing the $75 million in relocation fees. In the end everyone will be happy including Sacramento. Why........because they will be awarded an expansion team for all of their efforts.
