Seattle Cougars? Firebirds? OVG registers domains for 13 different names

OVG KeyArena renovations

As he did previously for the Vegas Golden Knights, Clark Rasmussen over at DetroitHockey.net has done a little sleuthing and discovered that the Oak View Group has registered 38 different domains pertaining to 13 different possible team names.

The domains were registered by Christina Song, who - according to her LinkedIn profile - is the General Counsel at OVG. The email used to register them belonged to Gibson Dunn, the firm that OVG used to negotiate the KeyArena renovation deal.

Withouth further ado, here is the list of 13 names that Rasmussen discovered:

  • Seattle Cougars
  • Seattle Eagles
  • Seattle Emeralds
  • Seattle Evergreens
  • Seattle Firebirds
  • Seattle Kraken
  • Seattle Rainiers
  • Seattle Renegades
  • Seattle Sea Lions
  • Seattle Seals
  • Seattle Sockeyes
  • Seattle Totems
  • Seattle Whales

What, no Steelheads?

Chris Meirose and others will be happy to see Kraken made the list. It’s also notable that Totems is on there, even though the trademark for such is already registered. The Seattle Totems played in the WHL and CHL and tried to make the jump to the NHL in 1976 but were unable to due to ownership issues.

Another interesting name to see is the Seattle Rainiers, which was the name of Seattle’s minor league baseball team in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 to 1906 and 1919 to 1968.

Wazzu fans may be happy to see Cougars represented, although that was previously the Detroit Red Wings’ name. Eagles was also previously represented in the NHL, when the Ottawa Senators moved to St. Louis in 1934. That team didn’t last and it was folded. The (Golden) Seals were also already an NHL team, in Oakland from 1967 to 1976.

Now, it’s not guaranteed that the team’s name is on this list. Something could change at the last minute. Maybe Thunderbirds becomes a more viable option. Not to mention, the team hasn’t even technically been awarded yet. There is still an expansion process to go through. However, it is interesting.

What do you guys think of the names on this list? Any that you really like or dislike?
