Another day, more rumors

From the last thread. Daina Falk, daughter of “super agent” David Falk reporting that a sale is a done deal.

All I can tell everybody is that in sports there is no such thing as a done deal until paperwork is submitted and an announcement made. I don’t know where things are. I don’t ask and I don’t want to know. I do know that even if Daina Falk heard something from a good source there is lots of room for it either to be untrue, based on speculation somewhere down the information chain or for it to fall apart.

We are all crossing our fingers for some great news. We can all see how hard Chris has worked and the progress that is apparently being made. Lets just hold tight and be excited. Talk about it here all you want but try not to contribute to the mad spread of speculation.

Its likely to be a busy couple of months with rumors, maybe some real action sprinkled in. Stay as level as you can.

Or she heard it from her dad who never thought in a millions years she would tweet it on her twitter account because she really has not vested interest in either city. Sometimes I think the stuff just gets out in ways no one would expect. It’s possible it’s not true at all or it could be the total truth. The ride continues….

She deleted the tweet. Let the speculation begin.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this is true. On a side note, looked up David Falk’s clients. Interesting that Sullinger is one of his guys. Could it be that the big 3-way trade with Boston & LA that might be going down??? Thats why he has some inside info on a pending sale. In any event, I sure hope this pans out. I can’t wait for the first OKC game at the Key next year. Go SUPES!!!

Super agent David Falk’s daughter Daina tweeted yesterday that Seattle billionaire Chris Hansen has already come to an agreement with the Maloofs to buy the Kings, calling it a “done deal.” Since those rumors hit the Twittersphere, she backed off a bit on her Facebook page and deleted her tweets at about 9 a.m. ET today (original here). Seattle writer Chris Daniels wasn’t in a hurry to address the “rumors” last night, adding that “it isn’t over until it’s over” and that’s a point of agreement here.

I agree with the “it isn’t over until it’s over” part, but that implies that something is indeed very close.

Also, she didn’t back off. She deleted the tweet. To back off would be to tweet something like “sources tell me I may have jumped the gun a little bit, but something is definitely in the works”.

Sounds like a false alarm. King spokesmen tells krca kings havent been sold and hansen says he wont comment on internet rumors. -king 5

  15. Cysco says:

I would have been “meh” on the daughter’s rumor tweet, but the fact that she removed it…

Either she was getting hammered from every direction for more info and thought that taking it down would reduce the attention, or her dad was all “WTF! You posted that on twitter!”

There has been way to many rumors pointing in this direction over the last few weeks. As the saying goes, “Where there’s smoke, there are billionaires buying baketball teams” or something like that.

  16. Zeppe says:

There could be parameters in place and agreed to by both parties, but nothing signed and voted on would make the Kings statement correct. The team has not been sold. But like Cysco said, they left out yet or the word officially.

  17. Kevin Nesgoda says:

    Guys,

If this does come to pass and the Kings do end up here let’s be classy and not rub it in the face of Sacramento. Let’s not give them the treatment that OKC gave us. Sacramento can obviously support an NBA squad when ownership and management actually give a shit and put a winner out on the floor.

    • John_S says:

Agreed, I went to Sactown Royalty which is a great site that does an amazing job breaking down the team and there are some there that feel that there is a “vocal minority in Seattle” who feel that Sac dropped the ball.

I know that people that come here know that that is not true about Sac and they went all the way before the Maloofs flaked on them.

But lets try and temper any comments regarding the city and fans because they are truly 1st class.

      • Kevin Nesgoda says:

They are. Really love the fans of Sacramento. That place was electric even when the Kings were mediocre and they can still get rowdy for a home game. I really don’t want to take their team, but sadly this is the game we play right now in the NBA. They’ll get another team sooner rather than later and they’ll have owners who want to win and who aren’t broke and have in fighting.

        • Laporbo says:

I don’t wish them to lose their team but I can’t say I love them or think they are 1st class. I will never forget when the Sonics were playing in Sac years ago (seems like playoffs but maybe not) and GP went down with a twisted ankle. The fans were laughing and cheering like crazy. Karma spoke when not long after Mitch went down with same thing and I don’t think he was ever the same.

      • SpeedCat says:

Agreed with John and Kevin. The first thought I had seeing this, was Oh No, the poor Sactown fans. This is too damn early for news to be leaking out and getting them agitated about it. Remember how bad that was for us?

The second thought was pretty much exactly what Brian said to start this thread.

  18. danabarrosetc says:

IF this happens, IF all these rumors are true, I am not going to choose the approach of “Well, Sacramento was too small a market to support a team anyway” because I think the economics of that argument are complex and because it’s dismissive of loyal fans. I’ll choose the argument/rationale/comfort of that team leaving Sacramento regardless and better Seattle than Anaheim or anywhere else.
However, I also reject the idea of the fans stealing anyone’s team. We’re not the owners, we don’t write the checks, this is all being played out above our pay grade. Did grass roots support help Hansen’s efforts so far? Sure. But it’s not that Kings fans don’t love their team, it’s that their owners were foolish.

    • John_S says:

I gotta say the “Well, Sacramento was too small a market to support a team anyway” argument is false.

They had an agreement with the Maloofs to build an arena but the Maloofs reneged on the agreement because they want to put as little money into the deal as possible.

Kevin Johnson is on record with the Sacramento Bee saying “”The dialogue is open. We’re here, we have an arena deal downtown that is ready to be signed if they want to do it.”

  19. Numbers Guy1984 says:

There is an elephant in the room that nobody is seeing or talking about.

Effective January 1st, federal income tax on long-term capital gains (such as selling a basketball franchise) increased from 15% to 20%. Meanwhile, California state income tax on high earners increased by ~3-5% in 2013 relative to 2012. Sure, the Maloof’s didn’t know exactly how much federal capital gains taxes were going to increase as the “fiscal cliff” deal wasn’t finalized until Jan 1. However, after Barack Obama was reelected, most wealthy individuals started planning for some level of increase in taxes and most assumed the increase would be at least the increases that were ultimately signed into law.

Why does this matter? The Maloof’s, had a HUGE financial incentive to either commit to owning the team long-term or selling the team before 12/31/2012. With income tax rates increasing in 2013, the Maloof’s stand to owe significantly more cash to both the Federal Gov’t and the state of California if they wait until 2013 to sell the team. For example, if the team is sold for $500m, the profit on sale would be in the neighborhood of $250m based on my rough estimate ($500m less publicly available purchase price of $156m less estimates of amounts owed to Sacramento for their loan to the Kings ~$100m). While actual profit could vary based on a number of factors, it will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. If that gain was recognized in 2013 rather than 2012, the Maloof’s would owe an additional 5-12% (estimated) in income tax to a combination of California and the Federal Government. As a result, a $250m profit by the Maloof’s in 2013 would result in substantial, increases in income taxes payable to the Fed/California.

In a nut shell, from purely a “number game” I believe the Maloof’s could have struck an agreement with Hansen before 2012 that is waiting to get announced. Unless they (Maloof’s) believe more money can be extracted out of Hansen or they actually believe the Virginia option had legs, they had every reason to cut a deal before tax rates went up in 2013. The Maloof’s care about maximizing profits. For that reason, waiting until 2013 to sell the team makes zero sense.

Does it stop you from buying the car? No. And would you rather buy a new car? Obviously, but in this instance, no one will sell you one. And of course you’re going to want to buy another car when you just got city approval for a sweet new garage.

  26. 206er says:

so sounds like no deal this morning. i honestly would NOT be surprised at all if the maloof’s spokespeople change their tone by this afternoon. i’m of course just guessing like the rest of you but it seems like when things get this chaotic and volatile feeling something is on the horizon. to quote wayne’s world, i hope they are “crossing the t’s and dotting the… lower case j’s…”

These wojyahoonba tweets are consistent with what I was told. I believe a deal in principal has been reached, but the contract is still being finalized. Its juicy. I will feel way better when another source starts reporting it.

    • Myk says:

I would agree on the Woj stuff…I think what he is reporting is 100% true. That doesn’t mean that the Maloofs can’t do what they’ve done in the past. Basically, if this doesn’t go through it doesn’t mean that what is being reported is wrong..it means the Maloofs suck

      • Menace says:

Maloofs have backed out before. It wouldnt be a shocker.

That’s only if it was an expansion team -

        http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/5060/clay-bennett-didn-t-exactly-give-up-that-sonic-legacy

        History
When it comes to the team’s history, the real fight arrives only if Seattle gets an expansion team. Otherwise, the new team will presumably come with their own history. (Unspecified, by my reading of the document, is what happens if an owner like Steve Ballmer wants to move a team here and re-make them as the Sonics, complete with the Sonics’ history.)

In the event Seattle gets an expansion team, that team will have “shared history” with the team in Seattle. According to this document, if an expansion team is playing in KeyArena with the next five years, then both teams (the Oklahoma TBDs and the New Seattle Sonics) will be able to use the Sonics statistics, player histories, and franchise records, etc.

Yeah, I’m still confused on all that too. I keep hearing everything will be shared with the Thunder. To me that makes no sense for the Thunder.

      • Taylor Made says:

OKC fans don’t even want that. Hopefully we can get it back in full.

        • Menace says:

The name is ours per the settlement. So is shared history (I think)……..but wasnt that contingent on an expansion team?

          • Taylor Made says:

            from Wikipedia;

“According to the conditions of the settlement, the Sonics’ name and colors could not be used by the team in Oklahoma City, but could be taken by a future team in Seattle, although no promises for a replacement team were given. The OKC team would retain the franchise history of the SuperSonics, which could be “shared” with any future NBA team in Seattle.”

          • Gene Hunt says:

This whole shared history thing is confusing.

          • Taylor Made says:

so if the history is shared, then the Sonics were 2012 Western Conference Champs, right?

    • BarelyAble says:

I think that OKC will probably give that back, especially if they win the title this year. But then again, these guys really like money and this is an easy way to extract some extra cash. Also, who knows how the NBA will mandate history being used.

    Kevin Johnson ‏@KJ_MayorJohnson
    Bottom line Sacramento: it’s not over… #keepthefaith #playingtowin

I need to find a way to listen to KJR during class.

    Bill Simmons ‏@BillSimmons

Within 10 months, Seattle might have Russell Wilson, the Sonics and legalized marijuana. I’m putting my house on the market.

  95. Omar says:

Here’s a take of the situation from OKC’s perspective: http://dailythunder.com/2013/01/report-maloofs-nearing-deal-to-sell-kings-to-seattle-group/

    • SpeedCat says:

he’s mostly on point except for the thought that our team “would have moved somewhere else” had they not moved to OKC. That’s just pure speculation IMO, and feeds into the false argument that our fans are not good enough

      • BarelyAble says:

Also, Sonics-to-Thunder fans going back to the Sonics? What Sonics fans became Thunder fans???

        • criminy. says:

ummm seriously, no sh1t?? those people literally dont exist. ALSO, royce from dailyblunder also conveniently forgot to mention that bennett lied his way into the sale of the sonics. how do you defend that one, you goddamn hick. bennett and hansen are in no way alike.

    David Locke tweets:

Jazz fans be thankful to the Miller family - the message in Seattle past and Kings today is bad ownership and nothing fans can do

    Ain’t that the truth.

Not sure what to make of this. Multiple local owners willing to step up? Hopefully we get an announcement soon.

    • soundersfan84 says:

      neither do i.

    • Riboflavin says:

Does Sacramento really have an approved arena deal in place? Even if local owners step up, there is still an arena issue down there which that city has had 10 years to figure out.

    • Taylor Made says:

“There are other hurdles for the deal to clear, including an up-or-down vote from the Board of Governors after a recommendation by the league’s relocation committee, headed up by none other than Clay Bennett. Bennett saw firsthand the difference in how the Seattle politicians turned their back on the Sonics when he arrived, independent of his and the league’s mishandling of that situation, and he has been extremely impressed with Sacramento’s efforts to keep their team.”

I swear to God if Bennett ruins this for us…

      • soundersfan84 says:

Oh for heaven shakes. The BOG will approve it a sale and relocation to Seattle.

        • jason. says:

i am so sick of people thinking bennett would possibly shit on a NBA to seattle deal. hes not the devil, he doesnt hate seattle, hes not out to crush our dreams. it was an opportunity that he took advantage of. done. its over. let it go. that being said i am sure of 2 things. 1) i hate his guts 2) him being head of relocation will in no way negatively effect our chances of moving a team here.

      • Matt Parker says:

Pathetic. Impressed with Sacramento’s efforts? LOL. They had 10 years to sort this out? It’s getting approved.

      • Menace says:

He would have zero reason to do that. No incentive at all. You need to consider the fact that whenever a team moves the owners get paid.

      • BarelyAble says:

No way they vote against. Makes Bennett look good, owners do not like to vote against moving unless it hurts their interests, which this would not (and no way Paul Allen votes against), and the big kicker is the sale is for 2/3 more than the teams value. What owner would not want to help inflate the value of their team by precedent from previous sales. You know the small market owners are loving this.

    • Matt Parker says:

They’re not going to outbid Hansen, Balmer and Nordstrom. it really doesn’t matter if anybody is willing to step up. Balmer stepped up right before the Sonics left, didn’t matter.

  98. Gene Hunt says:

Full right up from Adrian http://yhoo.it/ZIgezz

  99. James says:

My goodness, can we please get a finalized deal? If I have to live for hours, days, or weeks in this kind of hyped up excitement with the possibility of my hopes being crushed I’m going to lose my mind.

An update on #NBAKings Seattle story: agent David Falk tells us he wasn’t source for daughter’s tweet. http://sacb.ee/XkjTzc

  101. Gene Hunt says:

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5

The NBA, & Commissioner David Stern, have made it clear to me over last several months that they are interested in returning to #Seattle.

  102. Gene Hunt says:

    Essex J. Porter ‏@EssexKIRO7

Source: Maloofs and Chris Hansen have been talking for weeks. Reports of Hansen deal to buy #NBAKings likely accurate.

  103. A Friendly Minnesotan says:

Holy cow this site has exploded with comments.

  104. Taylor Made says:

“@largesteven: Source: SEA groups offer was rejected by Maloofs. Hmmm. Plot thickening by the minute.”

  105. Numbers Guy1984 says:

Something tells me this is a smoke and mirrors campaign to bid up the asking price. Something smells fishy. We know know Hansen’s group hasn’t been leaking rumors, meaning the leaks are coming from the Maloof’s. Can’t be good…

  106. leBleede says:

    YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

  107. Gene Hunt says:

    Then this from Mitch Levy

    mitch levy ‏@kjrmitch

BTW, Any reports of a done deal (signed) between Maloofs and Hansen are inaccurate. Deal is moving along nicely but still not out of woods.

  108. Gene Hunt says:

    Seattle Sportsnet ‏@alexSSN

Looks like Hansen and the Maloofs are gonna go back and forth a bit, official announcement per @SoftyKJR could be coming by end-of-month.

  109. soundersfan84 says:

Oh btw there is a new thread up lets take the conversation to the new thread.
