From the last thread. Daina Falk, daughter of “super agent” David Falk reporting that a sale is a done deal.
All I can tell everybody is that in sports there is no such thing as a done deal until paperwork is submitted and an announcement made. I don’t know where things are. I don’t ask and I don’t want to know. I do know that even if Daina Falk heard something from a good source there is lots of room for it either to be untrue, based on speculation somewhere down the information chain or for it to fall apart.
We are all crossing our fingers for some great news. We can all see how hard Chris has worked and the progress that is apparently being made. Lets just hold tight and be excited. Talk about it here all you want but try not to contribute to the mad spread of speculation.
Its likely to be a busy couple of months with rumors, maybe some real action sprinkled in. Stay as level as you can.
“I do know that even if Daina Falk heard something from a good source there is lots of room for it either to be untrue, based on speculation somewhere down the information chain or for it to fall apart.”
Or she heard it from her dad who never thought in a millions years she would tweet it on her twitter account because she really has not vested interest in either city. Sometimes I think the stuff just gets out in ways no one would expect. It’s possible it’s not true at all or it could be the total truth. The ride continues….
She deleted the tweet. Let the speculation begin.
Chris Daniels @ChrisDaniels5
I’m honored ya’ll wanted to wake me from my bed to ask me about the “rumors”, but I’ll have more to say on this platform tomorrow.
Keeping my fingers crossed that this is true. On a side note, looked up David Falk’s clients. Interesting that Sullinger is one of his guys. Could it be that the big 3-way trade with Boston & LA that might be going down??? Thats why he has some inside info on a pending sale. In any event, I sure hope this pans out. I can’t wait for the first OKC game at the Key next year. Go SUPES!!!

oooh, i am operating on deep hunches and instincts based upon decades of being kicked around by the fates. . . no, wait, that might mean i’m operating on traumatic habit. . . but whatever, i have a good feeling about this. . . standing by in central penna for a green&gold explosion. semester just started and my students in ‘sports and society’ might find that their professor turns the entire semester into a lecture on the essential greatness of lenny wilkens. fingers x’d. but if it proves premature, i can wait, too.

Super agent David Falk’s daughter Daina tweeted yesterday that Seattle billionaire Chris Hansen has already come to an agreement with the Maloofs to buy the Kings, calling it a “done deal.” Since those rumors hit the Twittersphere, she backed off a bit on her Facebook page and deleted her tweets at about 9 a.m. ET today (original here). Seattle writer Chris Daniels wasn’t in a hurry to address the “rumors” last night, adding that “it isn’t over until it’s over” and that’s a point of agreement here.
I agree with the “it isn’t over until it’s over” part, but that implies that something is indeed very close.
Also, she didn’t back off. She deleted the tweet. To back off would be to tweet something like “sources tell me I may have jumped the gun a little bit, but something is definitely in the works”.
Ian @ianistweeting
A source close to the situation has confirmed to me that the Sacramento Kings are a basketball team.

“I cannot reveal my source but he generally hears about these things very early. Sorry to not be more forthcoming.” - Daina on email w/ us.
Couldn’t sleep all night. I hope it’s true.
The best way to ensure that you don’t wind up with any legitimate sources is to share private emails on Twitter
Hahaha. Yeah no sh!t. I was thinkin the same thing. Thats the last thing they hear from her. Hahaha
Sounds like a false alarm. King spokesmen tells krca kings havent been sold and hansen says he wont comment on internet rumors. -king 5
Kings spokesmen forgot a word in his statement “Yet”
Maybe they weren’t sold. Maybe they were traded for money?
good one
I would have been “meh” on the daughter’s rumor tweet, but the fact that she removed it…
Either she was getting hammered from every direction for more info and thought that taking it down would reduce the attention, or her dad was all “WTF! You posted that on twitter!”
There has been way to many rumors pointing in this direction over the last few weeks. As the saying goes, “Where there’s smoke, there are billionaires buying baketball teams” or something like that.
There could be parameters in place and agreed to by both parties, but nothing signed and voted on would make the Kings statement correct. The team has not been sold. But like Cysco said, they left out yet or the word officially.
Agreed.
Guys,
If this does come to pass and the Kings do end up here let’s be classy and not rub it in the face of Sacramento. Let’s not give them the treatment that OKC gave us. Sacramento can obviously support an NBA squad when ownership and management actually give a shit and put a winner out on the floor.
Agreed, I went to Sactown Royalty which is a great site that does an amazing job breaking down the team and there are some there that feel that there is a “vocal minority in Seattle” who feel that Sac dropped the ball.
I know that people that come here know that that is not true about Sac and they went all the way before the Maloofs flaked on them.
But lets try and temper any comments regarding the city and fans because they are truly 1st class.
They are. Really love the fans of Sacramento. That place was electric even when the Kings were mediocre and they can still get rowdy for a home game. I really don’t want to take their team, but sadly this is the game we play right now in the NBA. They’ll get another team sooner rather than later and they’ll have owners who want to win and who aren’t broke and have in fighting.
I don’t wish them to lose their team but I can’t say I love them or think they are 1st class. I will never forget when the Sonics were playing in Sac years ago (seems like playoffs but maybe not) and GP went down with a twisted ankle. The fans were laughing and cheering like crazy. Karma spoke when not long after Mitch went down with same thing and I don’t think he was ever the same.
Agreed with John and Kevin. The first thought I had seeing this, was Oh No, the poor Sactown fans. This is too damn early for news to be leaking out and getting them agitated about it. Remember how bad that was for us?
The second thought was pretty much exactly what Brian said to start this thread.
IF this happens, IF all these rumors are true, I am not going to choose the approach of “Well, Sacramento was too small a market to support a team anyway” because I think the economics of that argument are complex and because it’s dismissive of loyal fans. I’ll choose the argument/rationale/comfort of that team leaving Sacramento regardless and better Seattle than Anaheim or anywhere else.
However, I also reject the idea of the fans stealing anyone’s team. We’re not the owners, we don’t write the checks, this is all being played out above our pay grade. Did grass roots support help Hansen’s efforts so far? Sure. But it’s not that Kings fans don’t love their team, it’s that their owners were foolish.
I gotta say the “Well, Sacramento was too small a market to support a team anyway” argument is false.
They had an agreement with the Maloofs to build an arena but the Maloofs reneged on the agreement because they want to put as little money into the deal as possible.
Kevin Johnson is on record with the Sacramento Bee saying “”The dialogue is open. We’re here, we have an arena deal downtown that is ready to be signed if they want to do it.”
sorry I misread your post my bad. I agree with you
There is an elephant in the room that nobody is seeing or talking about.
Effective January 1st, federal income tax on long-term capital gains (such as selling a basketball franchise) increased from 15% to 20%. Meanwhile, California state income tax on high earners increased by ~3-5% in 2013 relative to 2012. Sure, the Maloof’s didn’t know exactly how much federal capital gains taxes were going to increase as the “fiscal cliff” deal wasn’t finalized until Jan 1. However, after Barack Obama was reelected, most wealthy individuals started planning for some level of increase in taxes and most assumed the increase would be at least the increases that were ultimately signed into law.
Why does this matter? The Maloof’s, had a HUGE financial incentive to either commit to owning the team long-term or selling the team before 12/31/2012. With income tax rates increasing in 2013, the Maloof’s stand to owe significantly more cash to both the Federal Gov’t and the state of California if they wait until 2013 to sell the team. For example, if the team is sold for $500m, the profit on sale would be in the neighborhood of $250m based on my rough estimate ($500m less publicly available purchase price of $156m less estimates of amounts owed to Sacramento for their loan to the Kings ~$100m). While actual profit could vary based on a number of factors, it will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. If that gain was recognized in 2013 rather than 2012, the Maloof’s would owe an additional 5-12% (estimated) in income tax to a combination of California and the Federal Government. As a result, a $250m profit by the Maloof’s in 2013 would result in substantial, increases in income taxes payable to the Fed/California.
In a nut shell, from purely a “number game” I believe the Maloof’s could have struck an agreement with Hansen before 2012 that is waiting to get announced. Unless they (Maloof’s) believe more money can be extracted out of Hansen or they actually believe the Virginia option had legs, they had every reason to cut a deal before tax rates went up in 2013. The Maloof’s care about maximizing profits. For that reason, waiting until 2013 to sell the team makes zero sense.
Nice breakdown Numbers Guy
Tweet from @Sacbeevictor - the Maloof’s also owe the NBA $200m, so the Maloof’s likely won’t profit significantly from the deal. Makes the change in tax rates more of a non factor.
Softy just posted some very interesting facebook posts that i cant copy/paste on this tablet. Sounds encouraging
I think Softy’s facebook page must be experiencing some insane amount of traffic right now as I only get a partial page and where it would have his facebook posts keeps refreshing and never loads lol.

RT @TonyBizjak: A Kings official has this to say on the twitter rumor Kings have been sold to Seattle group: That report is “inaccurate.”
Of course they are gonna deny it. They won’t confirm it until its done or been told to deny it until all groups are ready to be announced it.
“inaccurate” doesn’t necessarily mean “false”
Hmmmm “inaccurate” doesnt mean it aint happening imo
Its just the implication of it all.
Just like when you take a girl on a date on your boat out to sea. Get her a little tipsy, take her below deck. The implication is there.
Wait, might be a bad example. Been watching way too much It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Lol that show always cracks me up.
Agreed.
Checked the twitter responses and some saying its not gonna happen.
Dave Softy Mahler @Softykjr
Regarding Kings rumors: Just got a text from Chris Hansen: “I can’t comment on those things. Patience my friend.”
I havent read anything yet this morning that leads me to believe this couldn’t be happening. Just hanging on for the ride
If your car gets stolen and you go on craigslist and find a new one, then you go and find out the parents are selling their kid’s car, do you feel bad for the kid? Sure. Does it stop you from buying the car? No. And would you rather buy a new car? Obviously, but in this instance, no one will sell you one. And of course you’re going to want to buy another car when you just got city approval for a sweet new garage.
lol, this is a great analogy.
so sounds like no deal this morning. i honestly would NOT be surprised at all if the maloof’s spokespeople change their tone by this afternoon. i’m of course just guessing like the rest of you but it seems like when things get this chaotic and volatile feeling something is on the horizon. to quote wayne’s world, i hope they are “crossing the t’s and dotting the… lower case j’s…”
Well it might already been done they aren’t just saying its done yet. Like Hansen asked them to wait on public comments until they are ready to announce it for example.

These wojyahoonba tweets are consistent with what I was told. I believe a deal in principal has been reached, but the contract is still being finalized. Daniels tweet doesn’t really conflict either. “Things have heated up in the last 24 hours” could mean they had a deal in principal pending the outcome of negotians with VB.

No agreement signed, but one source describes deal as “1st and goal at 1.” Maloofs history of changing course late still makes many uneasy.
Also, Calabro on 710 after the hour
Folks, something could go wrong at the last minute because this is the Maloofs. However, I don’t think so. Soon we can start saying our whoo hoos.
The one main difference between this deal and everything else the Maloofs have pursued: they get a ton of cash in this deal. Unless they keep asking for more money until Hansen gives up, this should get finished.
ugh…maloofs keep small percentage? At least no say in team direction
that was per Softy
I effing love 2013
Ick. Now Woj from Yahoo is reporting the Maloofs will keep a small percentage of the team but have no real say in the franchise.
I don’t want them involved at all.
That’s a pretty major detail to report in all this IMO something is definitely up.
It’s probably the thing that convinced the Maloofs to sale.
As Calabro just mentioned the Maloofs get no vote and basically have no say in anything instead they just sit back and make money
So they are the minority owner. They are our Jay-Z
Calabro on 710 now
OMG…..is this real?
I’m sorry for the Kings fans, if that’s true, but it would be awesome to have the Supes back for next season….:D
More details from NBA Pro Basketball Talk
http://bit.ly/TLknyH
KC says they get no seat on the board and no vote at all. And I am sure there will be some sort of right of first refusal for a buyout should the Maloofs sell that stake. So it is basically a money maker for them. Still a punch in the gut to the Kings fans for them staying on the ownership group.
I’m losing my mind. Sorry Brian, I know we’re supposed to contain ourselves but I can’t help but feel excited!
Congrats all, this is unbelievable! SUUUUUUUUUUUPER SOOOOOOOONICS!!!!
Random thought probably better saved for after move is approved, but do we play in the Pacific or do they move some teams around to get us into the northwest?
I’m hoping they move the thunder out of the Northwest Division and we can have our spot back.
I’m going to cry!
Now a message from the Presidents http://bit.ly/10fxz46

Season tickets baby! Can’t wait to take my future kiddo to games!
that’s fantastic. mazel tov.
That’s awesome, congrats Jenn
congrats.
Finally a team! My condolences to Kings fans. I hope that they’re able to get another team with good ownership. They deserved better.
$500 million… now that’s being devout owner and fan.
Thank you Chris & Co.
KJR is sure pumping me up even more…all these old KC play by play calls are giving me goosebumps.
From NBA.com main page, Softy tweeted this http://twitter.yfrog.com/z/oeyq9npyj
wow- that’s huge.
The old NBC finals theme song too.
Trying to temper my expectations here. Trying to stay grounded.
The Adrian Wojnarowski tweets by themselves are not that reliable at this point. Not sure I trust him as much as I would like to. Same with the Daina Falk deal.
But…..
The combination of the two in the wake of the VB decision. Add in the timing of the relocation deadline……..
Its juicy. I will feel way better when another source starts reporting it.
Woj is far and away the most trustworthy source of NBA news.
Woj is probably the MOST respected NBA reporter in the business, with a track record of being quite accurate.
I hope you are right.
I would agree on the Woj stuff…I think what he is reporting is 100% true. That doesn’t mean that the Maloofs can’t do what they’ve done in the past. Basically, if this doesn’t go through it doesn’t mean that what is being reported is wrong..it means the Maloofs suck
Maloofs have backed out before. It wouldnt be a shocker.
But other than Woj reporting that the Maloofs would still have a stake in the team…….hes only reporting that its happening now. $500 mm has been mentioned before.
After riding this coaster Im just protecting myself. Not popping champagne quite yet.

2013. Seahawks storming through the playoffs. Sonics coming back. Hey Mariners! Time to step your game up!
Very exciting news! Exciting enough to bring me out of hibernation to post a comment!

Ok….. how much is it going to cost to get our history back from Clay?
$0. Its a shared history per the settlement.
That’s only if it was an expansion team -
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/5060/clay-bennett-didn-t-exactly-give-up-that-sonic-legacy
History
When it comes to the team’s history, the real fight arrives only if Seattle gets an expansion team. Otherwise, the new team will presumably come with their own history. (Unspecified, by my reading of the document, is what happens if an owner like Steve Ballmer wants to move a team here and re-make them as the Sonics, complete with the Sonics’ history.)
In the event Seattle gets an expansion team, that team will have “shared history” with the team in Seattle. According to this document, if an expansion team is playing in KeyArena with the next five years, then both teams (the Oklahoma TBDs and the New Seattle Sonics) will be able to use the Sonics statistics, player histories, and franchise records, etc.
710 ESPN Seattle @710ESPNSeattle
RT @JessamynESPN:Just talked to @TheKevinCalabro who spoke with a very reliable source re: #Kings to Seattle - replied one word: “Done.”
Done!!! I’m so stoked, don’t even know what to say.
So I know we get the Sonics name, logo, colors back. What about the banners, trophy, retired numbers, etc?
I know the trophy is at MOHAI, but I mean can we get sole custody of the championship?
Yeah, I’m still confused on all that too. I keep hearing everything will be shared with the Thunder. To me that makes no sense for the Thunder.
OKC fans don’t even want that. Hopefully we can get it back in full.
The name is ours per the settlement. So is shared history (I think)……..but wasnt that contingent on an expansion team?
from Wikipedia;
“According to the conditions of the settlement, the Sonics’ name and colors could not be used by the team in Oklahoma City, but could be taken by a future team in Seattle, although no promises for a replacement team were given. The OKC team would retain the franchise history of the SuperSonics, which could be “shared” with any future NBA team in Seattle.”
This whole shared history thing is confusing.
so if the history is shared, then the Sonics were 2012 Western Conference Champs, right?
I think that OKC will probably give that back, especially if they win the title this year. But then again, these guys really like money and this is an easy way to extract some extra cash. Also, who knows how the NBA will mandate history being used.
I guess I dont understand the concern about the history. Worst case scenario its a shared history situation. There isnt a chance we lose it.
Is March 1st the relocation deadline?
Yes
Ok that’s not too far off then.
sometimes dreams come true. thank you chris hansen. thank you.
Daniels on King5 just now said a statement from NBA and/or Maloofs could come this afternoon.
Yeah, I would think the Maloofs, at the bare minimum, owe the Kings fans the announcement before anyone else.
A friend of mine just told me that CH has been in a closed door meeting at BOA all morning. Supposedly discussing building plans.
BOA ?
I suppose that is BOG?
bank of america?
Yeah. Nevermind. I guess its about the EIS which isnt news.
If this is true, I don’t feel like celebrating. I feel dirty and terrible for Sacramento.
I can understand, but I’m not with ya buddy. I am a HAPPY man right now!
Maloofs caused this, not Chris, Ballmer, or anyone else.
Get over it! I don’t feel bad at all. Do you feel bad for Kansas City too, I mean that was their team before it was Sacramento’s. They had their chance. In fact they had more support than the league ever gave Seattle. So screw it, I don’t feel dirty or terrible for anybody.
That sounds like what OK fans were saying, circa 2008.
I feel bad for the fans because they had the Maloofs, who totally screwed them over. I don’t feel dirty though. This is a business move. We’re not lying to the people, we’re not talking out of both sides of our face, we’re not saying one thing and doing another. Everyone knows what this is. We are not Clay Bennett.

Seattle Super Sonics. Are basketball Bionic!
Sooo excited!
I wish Hansen & Co. didn’t have to spend that much on them. It’s overpaying frankly, by $150mm or so. combined with the outlay for the stadium and they’re in the hole in a big way.
Thank you Hansen, Balmer and Nordstroms!
Thank you.
we all knew Hansen is gonna have to over pay.
Really? Who cares. These are BILLIONAIRES. They didn’t become BILLIONAIRES by making stupid business moves. I trust they’re just fine overpaying for a EXTREMELY limited commodity.
Awesome!
I welcome the Kings and their history that will be coming with it.
Now it’ll be interesting to see how the resolve of the folks who swore they wouldn’t support a team if it didn’t come with the Sonics history is tested when the final terms of sale are announced.
their history won’t be coming with it
Wanna bet?
Seattle will be trying to get their OWN history back from OKC
Maybe we should let Sacramento keep the Kings’ history. Or send it back to Kansas City. Or Cincinnati, or Rochester.

Not too surprised Nickels said similar things when the Sonics were relocated.
There’s supposed to be an announcement from the Maloofs this afternoon. Not sure what KJ thinks he has up his sleeve.
Not really sure what the city could do if the loans get paid back through the sale. I am pretty sure the Maloofs own the arena so the team can move any time they want.

“Indeed, sources close to the situation told PBT that there are still many hurdles for this deal to overcome, and that Sacramento still has willing, reputable buyers ready to meet or beat Hansen’s offer in order to keep the franchise in town.”
are these local owners willing to give the Maloofs part ownership? I really think that’s what pushed the deal over the top.
no idea

Here’s a take of the situation from OKC’s perspective: http://dailythunder.com/2013/01/report-maloofs-nearing-deal-to-sell-kings-to-seattle-group/
he’s mostly on point except for the thought that our team “would have moved somewhere else” had they not moved to OKC. That’s just pure speculation IMO, and feeds into the false argument that our fans are not good enough
Also, Sonics-to-Thunder fans going back to the Sonics? What Sonics fans became Thunder fans???
ummm seriously, no sh1t?? those people literally dont exist. ALSO, royce from dailyblunder also conveniently forgot to mention that bennett lied his way into the sale of the sonics. how do you defend that one, you goddamn hick. bennett and hansen are in no way alike.

Not sure what to make of this. Multiple local owners willing to step up? Hopefully we get an announcement soon.
neither do i.
Does Sacramento really have an approved arena deal in place? Even if local owners step up, there is still an arena issue down there which that city has had 10 years to figure out.
No they don’t. That issue still has to be figured out.
KJ says there is, just waiting to be signed off on.
Appproved? There is no approved arena plan for Sacramento.
“I reach out to the Maloofs on a regular basis,” he said. “The dialogue is open. We’re here, we have an arena deal downtown that is ready to be signed if they want to do it.”
The deal that was supposedly approved is dead.
There maybe a deal on the table but its not approved imo. Approved as in done deal its gonna happen.
“There are other hurdles for the deal to clear, including an up-or-down vote from the Board of Governors after a recommendation by the league’s relocation committee, headed up by none other than Clay Bennett. Bennett saw firsthand the difference in how the Seattle politicians turned their back on the Sonics when he arrived, independent of his and the league’s mishandling of that situation, and he has been extremely impressed with Sacramento’s efforts to keep their team.”
I swear to God if Bennett ruins this for us…
Oh for heaven shakes. The BOG will approve it a sale and relocation to Seattle.
i am so sick of people thinking bennett would possibly shit on a NBA to seattle deal. hes not the devil, he doesnt hate seattle, hes not out to crush our dreams. it was an opportunity that he took advantage of. done. its over. let it go. that being said i am sure of 2 things. 1) i hate his guts 2) him being head of relocation will in no way negatively effect our chances of moving a team here.
So am i. Good grief folks we NEED to move on from the past.
Pathetic. Impressed with Sacramento’s efforts? LOL. They had 10 years to sort this out? It’s getting approved.
He would have zero reason to do that. No incentive at all. You need to consider the fact that whenever a team moves the owners get paid.
No way they vote against. Makes Bennett look good, owners do not like to vote against moving unless it hurts their interests, which this would not (and no way Paul Allen votes against), and the big kicker is the sale is for 2/3 more than the teams value. What owner would not want to help inflate the value of their team by precedent from previous sales. You know the small market owners are loving this.
They’re not going to outbid Hansen, Balmer and Nordstrom. it really doesn’t matter if anybody is willing to step up. Balmer stepped up right before the Sonics left, didn’t matter.
Full right up from Adrian http://yhoo.it/ZIgezz
write up lol
My goodness, can we please get a finalized deal? If I have to live for hours, days, or weeks in this kind of hyped up excitement with the possibility of my hopes being crushed I’m going to lose my mind.
Dale Kasler @dakasler
An update on #NBAKings Seattle story: agent David Falk tells us he wasn’t source for daughter’s tweet. http://sacb.ee/XkjTzc
lol butt covered.
Chris Daniels @ChrisDaniels5
The NBA, & Commissioner David Stern, have made it clear to me over last several months that they are interested in returning to #Seattle.
Essex J. Porter @EssexKIRO7
Source: Maloofs and Chris Hansen have been talking for weeks. Reports of Hansen deal to buy #NBAKings likely accurate.
Im pretty sure they have been talking for alot longer than “weeks”.
I’m with you on that Essex Porter is a good reporter but he seems way behind Chris Daniels on this story
Holy cow this site has exploded with comments.
“@largesteven: Source: SEA groups offer was rejected by Maloofs. Hmmm. Plot thickening by the minute.”
How can they reject a $200 mm overpay? This is crazy.
Oh for heaven shakes? So we got excited for NOTHING?
Did KJ intercept the 1st & goal @ the 1?
who knows. We don’t know if this is LEGIT or NOT
this guy has 500 followers, who is he? sounds like a nobody to me.
Something tells me this is a smoke and mirrors campaign to bid up the asking price. Something smells fishy. We know know Hansen’s group hasn’t been leaking rumors, meaning the leaks are coming from the Maloof’s. Can’t be good…
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Then this from Mitch Levy
mitch levy @kjrmitch
BTW, Any reports of a done deal (signed) between Maloofs and Hansen are inaccurate. Deal is moving along nicely but still not out of woods.
Seattle Sportsnet @alexSSN
Looks like Hansen and the Maloofs are gonna go back and forth a bit, official announcement per @SoftyKJR could be coming by end-of-month.
Ugh 21 days.
Oh btw there is a new thread up lets take the conversation to the new thread.
