Glad for a day off

Not a lot of news today. What a relief.

I thnk next week will be pretty critical to the news cycle. If they don’t get tangible information out about “whales” (city hall seems pretty committed to that term) and litigation strategy then they just don’t have anything. Even if they do get something out it I don’t think it makes a difference. They aren’t far enough along on their building. They want to say they have something done but they are a long way.

not sure if this was already posted but this should be interesting… a live chat monday at noon with seattle times and sac bee writers about the possible move. why do they always include lynn thompson on this stuff? she’s garbage. i guess she just spews the times’ arena.
    http://seattletimes.com/html/sportspages/2020220036_sacramento-kings-chat.html

    • soundersfan84 says:

Meh that’s one i am gonna skip.

      • 206er says:

well i’m guessing at least a couple mobilized sac fans will find out it’s going on and chime in. it could just be a blood bath of conflicting perspectives.

        • soundersfan84 says:

That’s what i am thinking it will be. The only good thing is that its gonna be moderated.

        • Brian Robinson says:

I remember when Lynn started this. She had been on the story for about 2 months and asked me for something on a story. I told her “Chris Daniels has already covered this pretty extensively if you just wan’t to look into his stories as a starting point.”

She replied “Who is Chris Daniels? Is that a sports radio guy because I don’t know them very well.”

Seriously. She had been on the story for 2 months and had not researched it enough to come across the name of the one guy who had won an Emmy for his coverage of the topic.

  2. soundersfan84 says:

If they are talking about litigation wouldn’t that hurt their case in convincing the NBA to keep the team there?

    • Danimal says:

yes. There does not seem to be any grounds for litigation, and court battles will make this ugly which NBA does not want

    • Brian Robinson says:

I certainly think so. It’s a two part plan. You have to make staying attractive and at the same time make leaving ugly. I’ve been there. The NBA will.crush those guys. The deal will already be so financially questionable that the legal battle will be really hard for the whales to commit to.

They should stay on the NBAs side and make their pitch to stay but switch quickly to a replacement team. Don’t go toe to toe with the NBA.

      • Brian Robinson says:

It will just cost a bunch of people grief and time and they wil wind up in the exact same spot in the end. We saw.in Seattle that the NBA views the precedent as threatening to their entire business model and will spend whatever it takes to avoid it.

        • Jared S. says:

I don’t see what was wrong with Seattle trying to enforce the lease against an owner who was trying to bolt, or how it threatened the NBA’s business model. It was unfortunate that things had gotten to that point, but Stern’s response seemed to be “What? How dare you try to make us obey the law?!”.

          • soundersfan84 says:

I think it was schultz’s lawsuit that cause a little bit more problematic then Seattle trying to enforce a lease.

          • soundersfan84 says:

If there is litigation it would be to block the sales agreement and that would be similar to what Schultz tried to do.

      • soundersfan84 says:

What’s not to say that there would be some sort of settlement if it ends up in litigation since it would also in NBA’s best interest to get litigation taken care off asap. NBA has leverage in this case.

  3. Paul Rogers says:

Not a fan of Vecsey, but here’s a humorous exchange between him and Carmichael Dave. First tweet is from Vescey the day the sale was announced. The rest was from today…

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
Source says almost living lock Phil Jackson will become front office face of Seattle-bound Kings’ franchise. Won’t coach. Will mentor choice

    Rumteen babaei‏@RumteenB
@PeterVecsey1 dude there still here in sac and will be and your talking about there “new front office” what a joke

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
    @RumteenB Dummy, it’s THEY’RE still here, not there….and THEIR “new…” not there

    Rumteen babaei‏@RumteenB
@PeterVecsey1 sir I was making a point that we are still the Sacramento kings so why is a non exsitent franchise assembling a front office?

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
@RumteenB Because $30M has been paid up front and NBA Board of Governors are scheduled to vote on sale of franchise.

    Carmichael Dave‏@CarmichaelDave
@PeterVecsey1 @rumteenb I beg your pardon Mr Vecsey but the 30 mil has NOT been paid up front. Gotta report the “facts”, right? :)

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
    @CarmichaelDave @RumteenB I read owners put up non-refundable $30M. Wrong?

    Carmichael Dave‏@CarmichaelDave
@PeterVecsey1 @rumteenb Deposit made Feb. 1st. Unknown options or “triggers” that would temper the “unrefundable” deposit.

    Carmichael Dave‏@CarmichaelDave
@PeterVecsey1 @rumteenb And wouldn’t the question natl media should be probing “why” deposit is necessary? Maloofs worried about NBA?

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
@CarmichaelDave @RumteenB You’re playing semantics. Is Board of Governors scheduled to vote on sale or not?

    Peter Vecsey‏@PeterVecsey1
@CarmichaelDave @RumteenB Never heard of pending professional sports team sale in which prospective owners didn’t have 2 put up $ or shut up

  4. MonsterMashburn says:

The kings dont seem very interested in hooping tonight, also Kyrie Irving is un-real!

  5. MarkS says:

The Sac Bee’s none story of Burkle’s meeting with Stern.

    http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/26/5142080/burkle-talks-to-nba-commissioner.html#disqus_thread

    • soundersfan84 says:

“The Burkle-Stern meeting presents evidence that the NBA is taking seriously Johnson’s effort to present an alternative ownership group to the league that would keep the team in Sacramento”

Of course the sac bee would say that.

    • Mike Baker says:

I’m not up on the geography of Sacramento, but, a big reason the city council was moving on the other arena proposal was to be part of revitalizing the rail yard property. How do the feel about gifting $200 million to this other property?

      • Danimal says:

I think it has to with Burkle owning some property by the mall so that’s why the move. He can get more revenue. The railyards are a good location (much better than Arco Arena is) close to downtown

  6. Mike Baker says:

The lack of motion in the Kings offense is stunning.
Cousins lacks intensity, he makes some good plays, but sometimes he just stands there. As much as they chuck shot, just crashing boards would result in good stats. Chuck Hayes has little talent but makes some effort.

They might want to get back on defense.

  7. Mike Baker says:

The nuggs broadcast team is making the point just now, Hayes gets a put back score on one end and is the first guy back on D?

  8. Danimal says:

Kings aren’t even trying now. Cousins is on the bench, looks like he’s about to doze off.

  9. SuperDuper says:

    71 first half points. Wow…

  10. jenn_gp says:

This is cute…filled with nothing but hope. I remember those days. A Kings fan just posted this rumor on kingsfans.com.

    http://www.kingsfans.com/forums/showthread.php?51079-Bring-Your-Own-Burkle-and-other-latest-stuff/page5

“So I just got done talking to the wife of a radio host who works for 98.5. He is a good friend of whitey from the rise guys…. And whitey told her Chris webber is on board as an investor and that stern is leaving the bid open and on the table until sacramento comes and matches it!!!!! I’m pretty stoked I’m at work and am posting this in the bathroom stall because I just found out!!!”

  11. Mike Baker says:

I added http://popcornmachine.net/ to the sidebar links on the right side of the page.

A complete time suck, but, some good stuff.

  12. Mike Baker says:

Kings need a vet to teach them the lost art of following your own shot.

  13. trolltossin says:

I think another thing that isnt getting much play but might have been discussed is that the arena project at the railyards that the Maloofs backed out of was held back a bit by budget (meaning the extravegence) and the Seattle one seems to be a one of kind type arena. With the foliage and the “green” features which represents our region with all the forests and such. I think it could be a feather in Hansen’s cap while negotiating with the league that we will probably be able be able to build a more extravegent arena (not only because ours speculative cost is quite a bit higher) but because of the district it will be in. It will be one of the biggest “stadium districts” if not the biggest in the US.

    • Mike Baker says:

I think, given time, the arena in Sacramento would be pretty good (not as good), but that’s the problem. As Brian pointed out, they are simply not as far along in that process.
What do they show in April?

  14. Mike Baker says:

They do zero to get Cousins involved in any plays.

I wouldn’t trade him, I would run enough plays through him that he experiences the feeling of being involved. What is the point of getting post position if they never throw the ball into the post?

They don’t do shit right now to try to get anything out of him, or the post.

Guys driving past their post players that have position so they can force an awkward and contested shot in the paint, or jack a 25 footer, uh, no, I don’t know why any big man on the Kings roster would do well in that environment.

  15. Peter says:

If they approve the sale ASG weekend, it’s over for SAC. and things seem to indicate that the BOG will be voting as soon as the Ballmer/Hansen group’s finances are vetted (McCann said 3 weeks). plus Hansen has to have control of the team BEFORE march 1st, probably at least a week before, to get the team up and running and apply for relocation. it basically doesn’t matter what SAC has in April if the sale has already been approved, the best they can hope for then is a replacement team, much like us 5 years ago.

    • hughc5 says:

Are they voting on the sale at the all star break? I thought they where voting on the sale and relocation at the same time in april

      • Sean says:

The league hasn’t said officially, there’s just been speculation.

It’d make sense to just get it over and done with during ASG weekend, but if the league really wants to give Sac some sort of chance or wants to get them as mobilized as possible to leave them hanging as a potential spot for the next available team, the April dates make sense.

There is no sense in waiting if the BOG isn’t going to try to tell the Maloofs who to sell, too, though. The vetting should be done by the ASG meeting.

      • Gene Hunt says:

Wouldn’t Hansen have to be approved as an owner before being able to file for relocation? If he has to be approved first then voting at the All Star break would make sense.

      • soundersfan84 says:

Articles are noting that KJ is expecting the sale to be voted on in April.

      • TheDude says:

There’s really only one reason to wait until April to vote on the sale: To give Sacramento time to put together a “competitive” offer for a team that’ s already been sold and has the purchase agreement currently in the process of being reviewed by the league.

So yeah, I don’t think there’s a valid reason to wait at all.

  16. Numbers Guy1984 says:

Am I missing something, or are there three significant events that have to happen in the next couple months?

    1) BOG votes on the Hansen/Ballmer/Nordstrom ownership group.
    2) Hansen Group applies for relocation to Seattle (March 1st is a soft NBA driven deadline)
    3) BOG votes on relocation (mid-April)

Everyone seems to be focus on the mid April BOG meeting where the relocation vote would be happen as the key focus for Sacramento. However, It seems to me that Hansen would have to be formally approved as an owner before step 2 and 3 commence. If this is the case, wouldn’t we be in a 5 week (max) sprint to the finish line? Once Hansen & Co are formally approved as owners, the franchise relocation is a formality. If Sacramento has less than 5 weeks before the BOG votes on the Hansen ownership group, I simply don’t think they have the time to finalize an ownership group and settle on an arena approval. Just too much to get done in a month.

    • TheDude says:

The deadline for relocation can be pushed back. They have done it before.

      • Numbers Guy1984 says:

The NBA has pushed this deadline back before, but it has only been in situations where an existing owner is working on an arena deal to keep a team in town. If the NBA pushes back the Hansen deal, it seems to me they would be giving serious thought to allowing Sacramento to match. I see no other realistic reason to push back a vote. The vetting of the Hansen/Ballmer/Nordstrom group won’t be the sticking point here.

        • TheDude says:

I agree that the combing over of the purchase agreement and our ownership group shouldn’t and most certainly won’t be a sticking point at all.

We should also note that the relocation deadline is March 1st, so if the vote comes at the April BOG summit then the deadline would already have been pushed back.

The key here is the annual BOG meeting during All Star weekend. Right now, the onus is pretty much entirely on the board to not drag their feet with their evaluation of the agreement and the Hansen/Ballmer group.

Either way, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. One will follow the other. The Sonics are going to be back in the fall. It’s inevitable.

We know Mr. Hansen is already having the Key prepped for next season. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he’ s already taken preliminary steps toward things like logo and uniform designs, radio and television rights negotiations, looking over the resumes of prospective front office people, etc.

          This is gonna get done.

    • trolltossin says:

The relocation committe can have the move approved with a stipulation that the sale is approved. So the relocation part can happen first as long as the sale passes.

I agree with you though I think the sale happens faster than people think. They can vote for the sale approval after the vetting process is complete (which they have already begun). McannSportsLaw dude on twitter told me something like 3 weeks. So if they have been vetting the deal all week we could be looking at 2 more weeks probably 3. So the BoG meets at All Star weekend. I think thats when the sale occurs and KJ is being hush hush (because he knows and thats why Burkle went to Stern to try and stop it) KJ will then play it off as the NBA are bad guys for not giving him a chance to pitch them though he never really had a chance because of the way NBA does its business.

  17. trolltossin says:

Watching this Kings game. SO it looks like Hansen is paying a ton of money for a D League team. The coaching staff looks so apathetic because they all know they are going to be there till the end of the season and then will be fired. In all actuality the players look apathetic too because they dont know what team they will be on next season. Some will be Sonics and Im sure most will traded or wont be in Seattle very long. Probably really hard on the coaching staff and players being in flux the rest of this season.

    • Gene Hunt says:

It seems like since the beginning of the game the kings looked completely disinterested in even being there.

    • Numbers Guy1984 says:

Hansen might as well be buying the equivalent of an expansion franchise. He plans on changing the team mascot, leaving the history in Sacramento and he is taking over a talent void franchise. It’ll be a touch first couple years, but I think we all have faith in Chris that the right people will be hired to turn this thing around.

  18. Gene Hunt says:

I’m getting the Denver feed of this game and their commentators have brought up Hansen’s group buying the kings a few times now. The play by play guy has been saying what a great franchise the kings were and how he knows KJ, etc… but his tone was really down on the kings. He also mentioned that when (and then caught himself and said if) the team moves to Seattle that the coaching staff would have to infuse this team with some kind of philosophy and a lot of the players could be gone.

  19. Laporbo says:

Ok, I know everyone is down on the E word because its not likely but I have a question. People keep saying E in 2014 or 2015. Why does it have to be a year or more delay should they go that route? Why can’t they E for 2013? If the Kings come it will be for 2013. Seems it would be just as easy to start one up from scratch in 2013.

    • soundersfan84 says:

Let use the sounders for example. MLS announced in 2007 that they are granting seattle an expansion league that will begin playing in 2009. It takes time to get everything ready for league play.

    • Numbers Guy1984 says:

It’s all about profitability. 31 teams splitting a piece of the national revenue pie results in lower revenue for the other 30 teams. You can partially offset this with a large expansion fee, but it may not be enough for the NBA to consider expansion for another 3-4 year until more teams, under the current CBA are cash flow positive. I think we all saw the Forbes article about franchise values which is great for the owners. But the key is year to year profitability. Right now, there is still as significant number of franchises that are operating at a loss. This will not make owners likely to approve an expansion team.

      • SMK206 says:

Question: are TV revenues subject to the NBA’s revenue-sharing agreement? Or is it just basketball-related revenue? If the former, then a 1/31 slice of a large pie is better for the other owners than a 1/30 slice of a smaller pie.

    • Ross says:

Like it’s already been said, next year is too soon for a true expansion. However, if Burkle et al convince the league that Sacramento deserves a team, the league could treat this like the Ravens/Browns. “Suspend” the Kings operations in Sacramento until a new arena is built and then sell a new team to Burkle and allow Hansen/Ballmer to take the organization they have purchased and call it an “expansion” team to Seattle. Seattle gets the infrastructure of the team (players, staff that wish to stay etc.), but the records, colors and memorabilia stay in Sacramento.

  20. Gene Hunt says:

    Den 111 Sac 83

  21. Gene Hunt says:

    Final Den 121 Sac 93

  22. SMK206 says:

Apropos of nothing, it is going to be hilarious to watch people in Seattle get up to speed on all the advancements in basketball analysis that have occurred over the last five years. TS%, Win Shares, adjusted +/-…these things are all relatively mainstream now, yet people on this board are going to be talking about raw PPG and RPG for the first year or two.

  23. soundersfan84 says:

LOL okay i have to post this comment from the hockey forum cause its ridiculous stupid.

” Stern wants Seattle to get a team back but he’s not going to make the same mistake twice doing it. If this goes through, all he’s doing is making up the Seattle mistake by making Sacramento the mistake.

You also completely falsify the league’s stances towards litigation like this. If any of that crap were true, Seattle wouldn’t even be in the discussion for a team because they did this when they lost their team.

And yes, this was a quick deal. Even if you believe your story, two months is a short time for a sale process of this size. And just because Hansen, the NBA, and their lawyers don’t believe it is a huge issue doesn’t mean much of anything. The courts will decide and it wouldn’t impact announcing it in the slightest because they’d have to go through with it one way or the other. ”

LOL so NBA has to get the courts permission to continue on with the process of approving the kings sale to Seattle’s group.

    • SMK206 says:

The extent to which people on this board mock and ridicule Kings fans for maintaining irrational hope is truly baffling. How can you not empathize with them? Where the hell were you in 2008?

      • soundersfan84 says:

Look i feel sorry for kings fans and honestly i wish we can get a team with out another city losing theirs but not my choice.

I’m not even sure if this person is a kings fan. Either way I’m moving on from arguing with that person no point.

        • soundersfan84 says:

          no point in continuing.

          • SMK206 says:

I understand that you feel bad for Kings fans, and you’d rather not take another city’s team. That’s something we all share. But you just flat-out referred to that guy as “stupid” for clinging to his far-fetched hopes. Maybe I was “stupid” for convincing myself that the Schultz lawsuit was going to save the day in 2008, or that the Ballmer group would prevail, but it sure didn’t seem that way at the time. These people in Sacramento are experiencing severe trauma right now, and are not thinking clearly; please cut them a break.

          • soundersfan84 says:

My apologizes then perhaps i should have used a different word then.

          • soundersfan84 says:

Like i said. SMK206, i am moving on.

  24. Peter says:

I don’t see BOG voting on move before sale. I don’t think there is precedent for this. vote on sale, then move. Hansen has a lot to do to prepare for this fall, and I don’t see them giving the kings a lame duck year in SAC. if they want SAC to back down and take the next available team, they’ll approve at the ASG weekend. approving the sale/move at the same time just opens up too much possibility for litigation. if you approve sale in feb, it’s over. SAC can necogoiate name/history/colors staying in SAC and being next in line for a new team, but not much else.

    • The Original says:

I would be very surprised if the Hansen group aren’t a long way ahead with all of the relocation paperwork and all of the other items that have to be in order for them to play this fall in Seattle. If they have already got Phil Jackson in line, they have a lot other of the work already done or well on their way.

      • TheDude says:

I flatly refuse to believe that Phil Jackson will have anything to do with this franchise when the rumors are based on a throw away comment Bill Simmons pulled out in one of his columns and Peter Vescy’ s tweets. Not getting my hopes up based on anything those two say.

When Woj starts reporting it, I’ ‘ll start to believe.

  25. Peter says:

Aaron Levine said they’d vote on Move April 1st. so it’s all up in the air. but if the BOG nixes this, and we don’t get a promise of an E word, I’m done with the NBA. period.

    • Gene Hunt says:

But the vote to approve the sale seems like it would have to take place before the relocation vote.

      • trolltossin says:

Possibly they will push the relocation vote back until after the approval of the actual sale. It has been stated a few times that they could vote for relocation and have the relocation be okay’d as long as the sale is approved.

Like I said though they are going throught vetting process and the fact that they started doing this so quickly shows that they are trying to execute the process quickly.

I honestly believe the sale will be approved before April. Once vetting of the agreement is done the BoG can vote anytime. They will be meeting at the All Star game as usual. Im not sure if its a meeting like the April meeting but they could vote then or whenever they felt it if they wanted. The BoG could go ahead and vote without Stern’s blessing if they felt like it. I doubt they would but he does exist as the head of the NBA because of them

    • soundersfan84 says:

      Peter,

there is a chance Sacramento may keep their team and somehow is able to get an arena plan going with a ownership group with whales and makes a better offer than Seattle’s group. BOG is within their right to go take that better offer.

We just don’t know what will happen in 3 months.

      • trolltossin says:

The part that befuddles me is that a local ownership group wasnt ready to make an offer at the word sale. I mean with the Maloofs and that volatile situation you think that the second a sale was agreed to by the Maloofs that a local group would be like we have been prepared for this and they would never listen and here is out proposal. Not getting things going last minute.

With the Maloofs as owners the local intesrested “whales” should of had a contigency plan and if not them KJ should have.

      • brettb3 says:

Actually they can’t take that offer. They can only reject Hansen’s PSA.

        • trolltossin says:

You are right I shouldve said it way differently. If they had a contigency plan for this LIKELY scenario they couldve shown the offer they had just in case right away and right when Hansen sent is. They could make the case they have to make right away. The more time they waste the worse it looks.

The NBA does not like things thrown together no matter how valiant they are making it out to be. Especially when someone like Hansen has been working for at least a year if not 2-3 while corresponding with the NBA.

I still think that Stern suggested Hansen to buy the Kings as soon as the Maloofs backed out on the arena. He probably figured that the Maloofs and KJ’s relationship was so split that it couldnt be helped and just wanted to scrap it. I also think thats part of KJ hard line stance he is going with on working day and night on this. Not just for political gain but a little guilt as well for pushing the Maloofs and having the Maloofs push back to the point that they hate eachother and the Maloofs became hell bent on their way in Sacramento or the team is getting sold out of town.

I believe Stern saw an opportunity to build his tarnished image when he allowed the Sonics to be taken so easily and the way he allowed it to go down. He knew that the Sacramento situation had reached a point of no return and would only get worse in Sacramento with the Maloofs costing other owners revenue sharing money and driving the franchise further and further into the ground.

  26. SuperDuper says:

Anybody know if that party is tonight at shawn kemps place

    • Gene Hunt says:

      Seattle SuperSonics ‏@BringBackSonics
Don’t forget @oskarsqueenanne is having a #Sonics party from 7pm till close tonight. If you see BBOS members @Jome20 or Jason, say hello.

  27. Peter says:

    the way I see it:
    1. Sale is approved ASG weekend (Wojo said BOG would vote on sale “At the next meeting”, which is the ASG weekend.

    2. Hansen applies for relocation Before March 1st. (BTW, reviewing an move takes A LOT of work by the relocation committee, so he can’t apply for relocation much after March 1st if they want to consider it April 17-18)

    3. BOG votes on relocation in April. deal is worked out to keep kings name/history/colors in SAC, SAC is “next in line”.

  28. Peter says:

You have to have control of the team to apply for relocation. applying for relocation triggers a relocation committee review, which takes a lot of work. so if Hansen doesn’t
have control of team not much after march 1st, this pretty much makes BOG vote on relocation impossible April 17-18. I highly doubt the NBA wants another year of this. litigation would be rampant.

    • SMK206 says:

Hansen could file a conditional relocation application on March 1 before the sale is officially approved. It might say something to the effect of “we are applying for relocation to Seattle subject to the NBA’s approval of our purchase agreement.” That way they could get it in before the March 1 deadline but not force the NBA to expedite its review of the sale (assuming the NBA would rather wait until April to give the appearance of hearing out KJ). Sort of like how Bennett’s application in 2007/08 was conditioned on getting out of the Seattle lease.

      • trolltossin says:

Thank you for simplifying with in depth analysis and precedant of what I was alluding too. That is exactly how most NBA writers think it will go down. Wojo first stated that and has been re-iterated a few times.

Some national media members are calling it how it is and some are being compassionate in how they release their info to nation. The only national guy giving continous “good news” type writing is Sam Amick at this point and we all know that he came from that area and made his name as a NBA writer with Sacramento.

A lot of writers have an agenda one way or another. Thats why I think Wojo is good to get info. from when he gives it. He has legitimate, solid sources and has no dog in the fight or any real bias.

I just don’t trust the other cities arena scenarios to not either be resolved or too late in our 5 yr window to acquire the team. if they reject this, I think there is significant odds no team comes in our 5 year window unless the magical E word happens if the sale in rejected.

  30. Peter says:

    sorry, should say:

“if they reject this, I think there is significant odds no team comes in our 5 year window unless the magical E word happens “

  31. Peter says:

never heard of a relocation request before a sale is approved. in 07-08 Clay already owned the team.

    • Numbers Guy1984 says:

Simply put, there is no reason for the sale to NOT be complete before the March 1st deadline unless the NBA actually wants Sacramento to be able to compete for keeping the team. The vetting process should be done soon, so any delay in a vote would only be in Sacramento’s benefit.

      • trolltossin says:

If the vote does not happen till April Im not sure if that necassarily means anything except the NBA is trying to handle it differently for PR purposes and to at least give KJ “his chance.”

I guess you could be right that it is a bad thing but I just think that Hansen has his bases covered and alot of what is being done right now by Sacramento is a dog and pony show. Just my two cents

  32. Peter says:

there is ZERO chance Hansen gave the Maloofs the $30 million “for the heck of it.” he obviously had a endgame there. that sounds like something lawyers would put in a contract. for a reason.

  33. korboko says:

Could Washington State support two NBA teams? Like in Spokane or maybe in Tacoma?

    • trolltossin says:

      Very random

      • korboko says:

Sorry… I kinda wanted to know. Was thinking about this even when the Sonics were here.

        • Numbers Guy1984 says:

Only two cities have multiple teams - LA (Lakers, Clippers) and NYC (Knicks, Nets). There is not nearly enough corporate support and/or population to support two teams. Consider that a number of decent sized markets already lack an NBA team (KC, San Diego, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh… I could go on and on and on). Why in the world would the NBA every consider saturating this market. Flat out will never happen!

    • Paul Rogers says:

No, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an NBDL team placed somewhere in the state. Selfishly, I’d like that to happen in Yakima and revive the Sunkings. Realistically, it’s more likely in Tri Cities, Spokane, or Vancouver.

      • trolltossin says:

Tri Cities would make sense and Spokane. Maybe even Everett but that is kind of close to Seattle

      • Paul Rogers says:

Is it NBDL or NBADL? Not sure.

One thing that sickens me is that the CBA should’ve become the NBA’s developmental league. Thanks to the elder Isaiah Thomas, however, it didn’t happen and the CBA died a slow death.

Isaiah purchased the entire CBA years ago and I thought at the the time that it would be a great thing due to his relationships with the NBA. Turned out, however, that he couldn’t manage a peanut out of a wet paper bag and He ran the league into the ground.

It also turned out that he decided to play hardball with David Stern. He was in negotiations with Stern to have the NBA take over the league and turn it into the developmental league. Thomas wanted several million more dollars than Stern was offering and neither would budge.

Instead, Stern developed the league we have now and a league with history every bit as rich as the NBA’s died as a result. The kicker was that Thomas put the league into bankruptcy when he could’ve made millions if he’d just dealt with Stern. Idiot.

  34. hughc5 says:

I really hope they vote on the sale at the bog meeting at the all star game and sqwash all the nonsense of sacto “matching” proposals

  35. trolltossin says:

What I dont understand is that on January 18th local CBS 13 was reporting that KJ would speak to the BoG at All Star Weekend. Is he saying April for damage control because he knows thats when the vote is going down and he knows that the lcoals would be FREAKING out even more if they knew the vote and his chance at pitching his case to the NBA BoG comes All Star Weekend? It kind of makes sense espcially since local Sacramento television was reporting that KJ would speak at the All Star weekend BoG meeting two days before the confirmed NBA/Hansen/Maloof announcement.

  36. soundersfan84 says:

I’m confused. KJ speaking at all star BOG meeting or the April meeting? Both meetings?

    • Paul Rogers says:

I think it’s become clear it will be the April meeting. You can bet he’ll have multiple press conferences during both though.

      • trolltossin says:

Then why are they being so quick with the vetting process? Why not just do it normally its not because of finances IMO I mean the NBA cant be that worried about Hansen/Ballmer lol. I just think April is the end game in terms of relocation. The fact that its been said that the RoFR has already been vetted by the NBA and that they are wuickly going through that process says something IMO. I believe that this process is being expedited by the owners.Maybe they want to vote before this gets too ugly?

I mean if Stern plays this as KJ has a chance in April to make his pitch and the NBA BoG votes when the vetting is done (likely will be just before all star weekend) then the BoG votes and Stern can absolve himself because he doesnt have supreme control on whether or not they vote. If Stern asked them to wait Im sure they would but if he says nothing (publically) and they wote to approve the sale he could tell the public it wasnt in his control.

Just the way the tea leaves are laid out it looks like we are getting the Kings even if they make a fair and competitive bid. Many outlets have said it is a forgone conclusion which I think alot of us thought was a bit of an assumption but maybe the sources know that this is gonna happen. Maybe Hansen put out feelers long ago on what would make the other owners and maybe thats why he made such a increase (75%) in the valuation of the Kings to appease the owners enough to make this a done deal without any chance of recourse. Then he puts the monetary down payment to tie up the legal side of things.

Im sure it will be a tenuous week until February 1st when that down payment comes to be and becomes non-refundable. Im confident that no matter if it goes to April we will have our team but my blood pressure would like to have it approved sooner.

Too bad the NBA BoG isnt going by my blood pressure’s desires

  37. SpeedCat says:

    Good thoughts here, thanks all.

One thing I haven’t heard anyone on this board acknowledge is that the Forbes article specifically states the 30% jump in team values league wide is due to the new CBA, particularly the new revenue split between teams & players with players’ portion going from 57% down to 50%. They do not credit Kings contract for sale at all.

On the contrary, everyone here thinks the reason for jump in valuations is due to the Hansen/Maloof deal. Possibly because Forbes lists Kings value at the same price it is under contract for ($525 mil). But really, what other price could they have listed them for?

People here go on to assume the owners are so happy that this one deal has suddenly bumped up all their net worth. Really? Are we thinking the owners are that simplistic and don’t know the prime mover behind their own business, a major (and highly publicized, I might add) contract negotiation? Sure, this sale boosted things some. But to think it is the prime mover is backwards. Hansen paid this much because this is now how much teams are worth, not the other way around. I would side with Forbes’ analysis over any non-financial shots from the hip.

Sac fans are not the only ones with blinders on here.

But our homerish thinking here is causing us to believe that it is impossible for BOG to vote against this sale, because who would vote to lower their own net worth? Granted, there are a lot of good reasons BOG will likely approve the sale, but this one is fallacious. Let’s not pretend this one sale is so lopsidedly weighing on the valuations of the entire league, or upon the reasoning of the owners.

    • SpeedCat says:

“The average NBA team is worth $509 million, a 30% increase over last year. The increase is due to higher revenue from television, new and renovated arenas, and the NBA’s new collective-bargaining agreement, which reduced player costs from 57% of revenues to roughly 50%. The labor deal also increased the amount of money high-revenue teams provide low-revenue teams.”

      http://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2013/01/23/billion-dollar-knicks-and-lakers-top-list-of-nbas-most-valuable-teams/

      • SpeedCat says:

Revenue sharing. Now most, if not all, teams that were in the red will soon be in the black. Way to increase avg team values - if I am a potentials buyer surely I will pay more for an operation in the black than one that is bleeding cash like a stuck whale.

    • trolltossin says:

I agree I think (actually you just had me re think this) anyways I think that the for me the way Chris Daniels tweeted was that this was a big reason the valuation was increased because one of the lower worth teams increases 75% in one season. So the league goes up an average of 30% and the Kings increase 75% so what was the Kings deal actually in terms of increasing the valuation of franchises. I still believe it helped increase the number but I bet after thinking about it (without attempting any math because Id screw it up anyways) at most like 10%. Is that still having blinders?

Simple math, that would be way more speculative than fact, would say if the average franchise increased by 30% and the Kings increased 75% then Chris Hansen is paying 45% more than what an increase wouldve been just with the Maloof status quo. Now obviously I say that without knowing the real impact in percentages the sale has had league wide on the franchise value increases (%). Anyone care to add to this quandry?

Did Chris Hansen simply pay 45% more than market value? I wonder if that will turn local buyers off in Sacramento who actually care somewhat about the monetary involvement. Or is it that the Kings in Seattle are worth 45% more than in Sacramento. Probably not….but how much more are they worth in our market than in Sacramento’s. I know that is almost impossible to dissect just because of the different variables in play that are different between cities. For example we have multiple professional franchises and they have none at least out of the major sports.

Oh I just hurt my brain with more things to think about. I just want a basketball team already. Go Sonics!

    • traven says:

You seem correct on the valuations. I don’t think they will be going down anytime soon.

    • brettb3 says:

I’m not sure anyone here suggested that this one sale alone gives a massive value bump to all franchises. However, there’s no doubt at all that Hansen is overpaying for this team, and I absolutely do believe that’s an important factor for the BOG. What I’ve heard many people suggest is that if Sacramento comes in with a competitive, but lower offer, there’s no way the BOG would accept that, which I believe is true. At the end of the day, what they care about is the final sale price, and the perception it creates for the value of their own franchises.

  38. kinsesu says:

“Don’t worry — Be Happy” True Seattle sports fans that we are - we can’t seem to embrace this philosophy. Even the most self-proclaimed paranoid, glass half-empty Mitchy in the Morning tells us to “Stop” with this worrisome paranoia. KJ/Sac’s half court Hail Mary shot falls short -way short. Seattle wins it !! Game over.

    Enough already.

    • SpeedCat says:

I am not worried. I think kings will be the Sonics. I am trying to be realistic, however, rather than rosy-eyed. ;)

      • trolltossin says:

I think if we took off our Seattle loving blinders that are tinted green and gold we would be a whole lot more worried just because of the Stern factor. I have my worries Im just not choosing to care about them till more chips fall that would get me worried. That is not Burkle being by KJ either because a whale will be named. They will make a pitch.

Its when national writers like Wojo start saying this unraveling and for reasons that may not be thought of yet. Because if we can think of ways this unravels then you damn well that Hansen thought about him way beforehand and has guarded and protected himself from it. Its that random variable that happens out of nowhere that no one expects (even Sac folks) that worries me most.

    • trolltossin says:

Mike Ill admit I have been out of the league in terms of paying attention to all the advanced metrics and need to catch up so I dont sound like a total fool come next Fall. Is the efficiency the best thing to look at for an individual player and the +/- for his contribution to the game/team?

Is there a number that tells you who should be starting would that be the efficiency. I know its late but can you give me a brief overview of NBA advanced metrics for dummies?

  39. kinsesu says:

Yup, I am the epitomy of the Seattle sports fan - - - always waiting for the perverbial shoe to drop, bad Super Bowl refs, Schultz, ClayClay, etc.

But now this - - - Hansen: An incredibly patient, meticulous, enormously successful and experienced “hedge fund manager”. He has methodically planned this well before we even had a remote whiff of his plans. This type of transaction is his expertise. He didn’t pull the trigger publicly until he had already calculated every possible outcome. He prepared and mitigated for all possible issues and roadblocks.

He knows the end story, he has known all along.

Kind of funny I looked up twitter for Ron Burkle and supposedly he has one (doubtful) but has not tweeted https://twitter.com/RonBurkle

Plus Mark Mastrov (same deal doubtful) https://twitter.com/markmastrov

Just poking around and saw this so if they start spouting tweets if and when they are announced Whales of Sacramento Kings then there you go lol
