NBA Trade Deadline Open Thread

Update: NBA Trade Tracker on ESPN is a good resource to keep up with trades today (Big Chris)

So here we are. Exactly 3651 days (maybe) after Gary Payton was traded and most of cried, questioning the meaning of life.

Maybe that was just me.

We have the trade deadline and the rest of the night into tomorrow morning is going to be filled with rumors.

baseless predictions:

Hornets trade Eric Gordon to the Warriors for Harrison Barnes.

Nets can’t trade anyone because no one wants their trash and bad contracts.

Oklahoma City trades Kendrick Perkins in a three team deal that nets them a first round draft pick.

Orlando trades JJ Reddick to Memphis.

Josh Smith ends up in Houston, Thomas Robinson ends up in Atlanta. Houston eventually makes Western Conference Finals. Atlanta loses in first round again.

Clippers trade Bledsoe to Utah for Al Jefferson and Mo Williams. Clippers fans cringe at the idea of Crawford and Williams on court together.

Now, what are your predictions?

Sorry but i somehow found that funny.

    So Simple yet satisfying

  5. SMK206 says:

Bledsoe for Al Jefferson and Mo Williams? Clips would have to throw in about $15M of filler - ever heard of the salary cap?

Wasn’t doing full trades, just main components. A third team would be needed to absorb some money and contracts.

Ok, now THAT was good. Almost had a little Sonicsgasm there.

  9. MartinH says:

    … and “future considerations”. ;-)

  10. Sean says:

Satan trades David Stern’s soul back to him for nothing, citing “not wanting things to get that dark down here”.

  11. MartinH says:

It’s going to be interesting to see where Josh Smith lands.
Sounds as though it’s going to be Phoenix or Milwaukee.
(PHX shopping Gortat and Dudley, Bucks shopping Monta Ellis and whatever spare part they can get ATL to take)

  12. Myk says:

I don’t get half these trades but the biggest one is Gordon for Barnes…why would either team do that trade?

  13. trolltossin says:

I dont know why there was so much excitement for Thomas Robinson last year in the draft. Sure if he hit his peak he may be a fringe all star talent (doubtful) but I just never got the big deal. Honestly if he went to Iowa State instead of Kansas I doubt he goes in the top 10. To me he is just a taller version of Jon Brockman. Can rebound , play good defense, cant really do much offensively except offensive rebounds. Now he had some ok tools but to me he had way to many things that needed development to warrant a top 5 pick in the long run.

I mean they skipped over Lillard (who I wasnt high on but thought more of than Robinson), Drummond, etc. I think that I wouldve taken Robinson at #9 or #10 but at 5 was a reach IMO. Patrick Patterson isnt anything to behold but he is a nice piece. The rest of the guys are roster fodder though Douglas is serviceable as a backup PG but now the Kings have like 3 backup PG’s and Jimmer who masks as a PG because he cant play the 2.

In all honesty the Kings are full of back ups or guys that would be backups on most good teams. Cousins is a starting caliber talent with a bench attitude. Evans is intriguing because you wonder what he could become if he had a great PG to play with.

BTW the Maloofs made some money for themselves which I guess is good for them and pisses off everyone in Sacramento. Head scratching move because it was your lottery pick from this year. Guessing part of it is that they didnt believe in Robinson moving forward, get rid of Garcia, and to kill some of the fandom though that wont work this late in the game. That is something you do like Cway Benney did two years in advance to slowly bleed the fanbase dry. Two months out is not fooling anyone if that was their motive

  14. MartinH says:

(And for the record, Jason Jones is one of the Kings writers for the Sac Bee, so he’d know)

Yes. I’ll just make individual site ports per browser and device.

  19. Silvio says:

I don’t think the Warriors will(and should) trade for Eric Gordon.
That would create another midget backcourt just one year after they send Monta Ellis packing.
Though, Gordon’s a way better defender then Monta.

I do think that Josh Smith will end up in Houston, with Robinson going to ATL.

JJ Redick will get traded. Now the Spurs are rumored to be in the mix for him and I think he’d be great for them.

I don’t see the Clippers trading Bledsoe right now(more likely during the draft or free agency), cause sending Jordan as well won’t be a good trade, if it’s for Garnett alone. Though, if they could get Pierce as well, then that’s something they’d have to do.
A trade with Utah makes no sense for them, as Jefferson and Millsap are RFA this summer and would be way to expensive to keep.

BTW: That Kings/Rockets trade wasn’t good at all for the Kings and something Presti wouldn’t have ever done.
He’d at least gotten a pick out of this, cause saving some money is not enough for a #5 pick from a couple months ago.

  20. Taylor Made says:

Not too happy with the trade. I liked T-Rob and wanted him to be a Sonic. I don’t really see why Sac needed to dump salary, they already had one of the lowest payrolls in the league. Was it just to dump contracts heading to Seattle?

  21. Zeppe says:

Yeah, I’m kind of surprised they did this move. It kind if just says the Maloofs wanted to pocket some cash. I know Woj said Hansen was briefed on the trade but I wouldn’t think he would have much say over this since he’s not officially owner yet and not sure he would have a personnel guy on speed dial he could run it by anyway.

  22. Danimal says:

As much as I’d like to see Jimmer and Evans go, would be hard to trade them for anything. Pretty useless players overall

  23. BarelyAble says:

    @Silvo,

apparently according to Sam Amick the Rockets can’t trade Robinson now. He said he is waiting to get final confirmation on that though.

  24. Taylor Made says:

Rockets can trade T-Rob but only in a 1-for-1 trade. He cannot be part of a larger deal.

  25. BarelyAble says:

    Thanks for the clarification

  26. SonicBoom says:

I’m not a huge fan of this trade either- I think after watchingna bit of Robinson, it is clear that he is much more raw that I thought coming out of KU. But, he is noticeably gifted athletically, and I was looking forward to watching his maturation the mostmoutnof anyone else on this roster.

My theory is that DMC respects Patterson from their college days, and they are bringing him in to help guide, mentor, and just make their franchise center happy.

Regardless, even if that isn’t the explicit intention (and it is only to get the 1.2MM), it should still have a positive effect to Cousins.

  27. Mike Baker says:

Evans goes in the summer, Jimmer on draft day.

  28. Taylor Made says:

Twitter buzz sounds like Josh Smith could be headed to Milwaukee.

  29. Otto says:

So we traded Thomas Robinson for spare parts..but we could have had Josh Smith?

Now I’m getting even more pissed

  30. Taylor Made says:

    Otto:
So we traded Thomas Robinson for spare parts..but we could have had Josh Smith?

Don’t think “we” could have. We didn’t have anything ATL would want. The rumored deal is Ellis/Udoh/picks for Smith/Harris. Nothing the Kings had would have matched that.

  31. Otto says:

On second thought..seems some sactown fans feel that if patterson can compliment DMC and help get his act together, that it might be worth scrapping a lottery pick halfway through his first year.

I just hope it doesn’t come back to bite us in the end. But if Patterson can get DMC to stop being a mental midget, this might actually be good?

  32. Paul Rogers says:

    When is the draft lottery?

  33. Otto says:

Taylor Made: Don’t think “we” could have.We didn’t have anything ATL would want. The rumored deal is Ellis/Udoh/picks for Smith/Harris.Nothing the Kings had would have matched that.

I was just basing it on the potential trade that Kevin proposed (Trob forJosh Smith.)

  34. Otto says:

Oh and imagine if the Kings took Lillard. How fun would that team look up here? DMC with a proper Point guard?

  35. Taylor Made says:

    Paul Rogers:

It’s usually some time during the NBA Finals.

  36. Taylor Made says:

    Otto:
Oh and imagine if the Kings took Lillard. How fun would that team look up here?DMC with a proper Point guard?

As opposed to the glut of score-first PGs the team has now. Thomas/Jimmer/Brooks/Douglas. Yeesh.

  37. Otto says:

So we might keep 3-4 guys off of this Roster.

Not sure you can move Thornton. Keep IT, Patterson is a nice piece, and DMC. See if you can trade Evans/Jimmer for a pick.

  38. Paul Rogers says:

Taylor Made: It’s usually some time during the NBA Finals.

So our situation will hopefully be resolved by then. So if the team indeed comes north, who should get the privilege of going to New York and repping the Sonics at the lottery?

  39. Taylor Made says:

Douglas has a team option after this year (which will not be exercised). Patterson and Aldrich both have contracts through next season.

  40. Taylor Made says:

Paul Rogers: So our situation will hopefully be resolved by then. So if the team indeed comes north, who should get the privilege of going to New York and repping the Sonics at the lottery?

Well, rumors are that Payton has been approached by Hansen to be involved in the FO. If that’s true, I say him.

  41. Taylor Made says:

    Ken Berger ‏@KBergCBS
Kings have talked with Warriors about taking minimum-salary player, with cash as sweetener. GSW trying to avoid tax; Sac has roster spot.

  42. danabarrosetc says:

Paul, I think we all know that the team rep needs to be Shammond Williams. Or Ervin “Tragic” Johnson.

  43. The Original says:

So . . . if this trade was the first of the gut of the team, what do you think this means for the next owners of the Kings? Any chance to get healthier through free agency? I know that there is a chance of the #1 draft pick but how much future help will come through the draft this year?

  44. Taylor Made says:

    Taylor Made:
Douglas has a team option after this year (which will not be exercised).Patterson and Aldrich both have contracts through next season.

Correction, Aldrich’s contract is up after this year. That sheds some more light on this move.

After Paul and Howard, there’s no game changers in next year’s FA class. Some solid pieces, though (Okafor, Redick, Al Jefferson, Millsap)

  46. Taylor Made says:

    @ESPNSteinLine
Latest word out of Boston: Celtics making deadline-day run at player they’ve pursued before … Tyreke Evans

  47. BarelyAble says:

HS to be through free agency as the kings have forfeited a lot of draft picks through trades over the years. These moves are clear the team is going to be sold (which we know they have a PSA but this certainly confirms things) and I venture to say that the Seattle group will be a player in free agency with the low number of contractual obligations. Hopefully they can get more picks through a trade

  48. Taylor Made says:

Being under the luxury tax will benefit this offseason too. The team (still not ready to say “we”) will be able to take on players in S&Ts so if contending teams are looking to dump salary, we could help them out.

  49. Taylor Made says:

    @ESPNSteinLine
Kings, until today, have been rejecting all interest in Tyreke. But @mr_jasonjones of Sacramento Bee reports Kings revisiting that stance

  50. The Original says:

I think we all know that the new Supersonics are going to be a bad team for a year or two, but if the right moves are made, that team can be recovered. I don’t know about you, but I can watch a lot of losing if it is return of the Supersonics. Hopefully, we will be able to see improvement as the time goes on pretty quickly.

  51. The Original says:

If the Kings trade Tyreke, Kings fans are going to go nuts. I think that they are worried about Isiah Thomas being traded as well. If he isn’t, I think that gives us an idea how the Kings think the sale is going.

  52. TheDude says:

Don’t be pissed about Josh Smith. Dude has been squawking about getting a max contract this summer, and I for one am happy that the Sonics won’t be the team to overpay him.

The Robinson trade is fine with me. I wasn’t big on him, and the move brings in a guy who should be a capable back up PF whilst freeing up some cap space. The Maloofs also get to pocket some cash, so that should make them happy. Really doubt that Pat Patterson is going to have some sort of transformative effect on Cousins and his attitude. That line of thinking goes against everything we already know about Demarcus.

  53. Taylor Made says:

    Marc J. Spears ‏@SpearsNBAYahoo
Kings Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins have been given the impression that they would not be dealt, a source said.

I think Pau Gasol and Rondo could be last second moves, where? I don’t know — just know that Ainge and Kupchak are very clever. Would NOT be surprised if Kings trade Cousins AND Evans.

  56. Cysco says:

man, hard to construct a trade between boston and sacattle that makes sense. One has to assume that you’d want expiring deals or useful parts for Evans. Boston really doesn’t have either of those. Lots of multi-year deals and uninteresting pieces.

Unless the deal included Rondo and I can’t imagine botston accepting anything less than a package for Cousins and Evans for Rondo. (Talk about tanking the season. That’s one sure fire way to the top of the lottery)

  57. Gene Hunt says:

@Cysco - Bill Simmons yesterday on ESPN radio was talking about how the kings/Sonics should trade Cousins and I believe it was Evans and/or Jimmer for Rondo.

ESPN NBA Trade Machine is fun to use around this time of the year.

The only thing I can see that could work would be Tyreke + Brooks for Melo and Bass. Problem there is that Bass has two years left after this year @ $6 mill a year. Of course there would be pick(s) involved as well.

The two guys that I would really want off of the Celtics roster are Jeff Green and Avery Bradley, but doubt they would be moved by the Celts.

    Gene Hunt:

I believe that’s what it would take. Something like Evans&Cousins for Rondo&draft pick would work salary wise. You’d have a completely gutted team and would be lucky to win one more game this year, but would have a top-3 PG and a top draft pick to build around.

  61. The Original says:

Otto: Is trading Thomas Robinson for Patrick Patterson the right move? I feel like they could have gotten more.

On the face of it, no, it isn’t. But the Hansen group isn’t in a place to say no. And form the sounds of it, the Maloofs need every penny they can get. It has to be more than just losing the Palms.

  62. Cysco says:

Otto: Is trading Thomas Robinson for Patrick Patterson the right move?I feel like they could have gotten more.

It was the right thing to do if the goal was to save as much money this year as possible. (which was the Maloof’s goal) If the goal was to improve the team, it was not the right move.

BTW: Evans to Boston would either have to include Sullinger(even though he’s out for the year) and a pick or would have to be something for Rondo.
    Maybe something like:

    Evans, Brooks

    for

    Rondo

Though, I doubt Boston would touch that…

  78. rayray says:

Still confused by the Robinson trade, but honestly at least for now he didn’t look like anything special. If the Kings do end up coming here I don’t care who they keep because I imagine they’ll blow the team up and Sacramento doesn’t really have anyone worth while. That being said for some reason I hope they keep DMC. I know he’s had some ups and downs, but I remember all those years we spent as a fanbase looking for a decent center and now that we could potentially have one, I don’t want to trade him away for nothing.

  79. Menace says:

The Kings are a terrible terrible team. They need to be completely gutted and just start over. They only have one player worth anything. Its Cousins. Sending out $10 mm in salary and taking back $6 mm is probably a good thing.

  85. 206er says:

i never said you’d build a team around him. you said “They only have one player worth anything. Its Cousins.” i think you could use a young spark plug off the bench if you want to be a winning team. he was recognized as a rising star and has a lot of upside, therefore i’d call him “good.” remember antonio daniels with the sonics? he was huge but the team wasn’t “built around him.”

How can a active sports player be invovled in a ownership group of a team?

  90. 206er says:

hmmm… that sounds awkward. i guess kj will either come out and make bold claims about sacramento being on the verge of a superior offer and that they will (in his mind) keep the team, or he will try to drum up sympathy and talk about how the city supports the team. i’m hoping he goes down the sympathy road because i think that would be a sign that they don’t have anything…

soundersfan84: How can a active sports player be invovled in a ownership group of a team?

There is nothing banning a player from purchasing an ownership stake in a team from a different league. It certainly doesn’t have much precedent, but there isn’t any rules that ban it from happening. I believe there are rules against a player owning a team he plays for (or obviously any other team in that league). The CBA and/or leage constitution would ban this from happening. However, this is no different than Felix buying stock of a public/private company as a personal investment. Different league, no restrictions.

I’m not sure if Puckett is just speculating or trying to stir the pot – it’ll be interesting to see.

Thomas can be a piece to a winning team. The intangibles that he has will help any contending team and hopefully that is what this team will be in a few years.

Thomas could also believe that he deserves to be a starter due to how well he’s played the past couple of years and if that’s the case I would wish him the best as he finds a team who would start him.

Yes Felix could buy in and I actually think it would be pretty cool and he could endear himself even more to the Northwest though he may be the most loved player Seattle has right now (russell wilson?).

It will probably be a sympathy path not an us versus them scenario considering that Jason Reid and Chris Daniels will both be on the show. Maybe the segments are separate. I really hope that some of the other guys ask him about all the particulars of his purported NBA-approved deal and all the particulars about the timeline he has. COuld be interesting.

It wouldn’t shock me if this becomes a new popular investment for elite players, particularly in the MLB when contracts are fully guaranteed. Pro sports have become a stable investment with franchise values consistently climbing. If you are a player and have extra cash laying around and love sports, why not?

For Felix, this would cement the type of legacy/reputation the guy is trying to build. He loves Seattle and wants to stay here for the the remainder of his career. Why not buy a minority share of the Sonics ? He has $175m, along with the ~$50m he already earned to “play” with.

This is how I feel about the trade. There is nothing outside of a transformed Cousins and IT (Seattle ties/fan interest) worth saving or worrying about on this Kings roster. If this team gets blown up and we get cap space then it’s better than the current path the franchise is on. I do agree that I would like to see more draft picks included though.

So, being out of the NBA loop for 5 years or so now, is Dwight a possibility for the Sonics should the Lakers not sign or trade him today? Or do we not even want someone like Howard? My biggest concern is (IF Im a Kings fan) what about all the other failed attempts that looked like they were going to go thru and the NBA approved of and all that. The NBA knows it is taking a gamble big time with their arena going through. Seattle’s arena is alot further along and have an inkling it will get done. And if you think they are going to hand the franchise over to Burkle because the league says so, you are not paying attention.
They would spend the summer stripping out everything, sell furniture, and offer to the highest bidder that could Ellison.
The value of the franchise would drop the second the BOG would say “no” to Hansen. The only way to recover that value is to have an open bid, run in place for a half a season (again). And do this again.
Owners own the teams, not the fans, not the BOG.

I doubt Dwight would come to the Sonics. He originally wanted to be traded to Brooklyn and play with Deron Williams. There were talks he also wanted to go to Dallas. Houston has pursued Dwight for over a year as well and they will have cap space and another superstar in Harden that they can pair him up with.

Also the show was basically a rehash of everything that has been said ad nauseum.

  150. trolltossin says:

I know KJ has been saying the same thing for weeks but HE WILL announce the whales Im sure of it by March 1st unless something goes terribly wrong (which would be great for all our colllective health lol). I still think that he will do it at the State of the City address on Feb. 28th with thousands attending and making it a rah rah event for PR purposes and public morale

I know people will say the NBA doesn’t care about there being a possible NHL team (and largely they don’t), but they would like to have that possibility will get more public money and will likely get a bigger valuation from a media rights deal that will help the NBA team be profitable. I assume that is something that might help Seattle with the BOG committees even if it is just a minor point. I have to believe they have some idea of what the tv revenue could be at least with basic forecasting of households.

Sacramento didn’t have a complete done deal arena plan with it fully funded either though. What they voted on last year was just 1 of many votes to finalize that plan. The fact they still have to go through the biding process to sell the parking to a private group to even get the public funds for the plan which requires another vote.

Even assuming they have the same viewpoint and competence of their counterparts at the Times, adjusted the number somewhere between the cynics and the boosters- lets take a number of 180- midway between 120 and 240… and this deal is still flat out ridiculous, with too many variables and too little time. Has the Burkle/AEG issue been resolved?

  180. trolltossin says:

He will do the same thing and maybe more so against KJ. Time is ticking away. Even if KJ wouldve announced his investors and arena plan a month ago it wouldve been a huge uphill battle. Now he is stacking the proverbial deck against him even more.

KJ used the same narrative and I actually think that ESPN gave us more face time and credence after KJ left. Kevin Fippin pretty much didnt get to say much other than arguing that the NBA would rather have public subsidy and that it sucks the situation they are in

Odds of us getting a team is great i could argue that its 100% as off now that the Kings are coming here. Rather it remains at 100% or becomes 100% guarantee that the kings are coming here by the time April 18 hits remains to be see. What Sacramento does between now and apirl 18th will matter on rather or not that 100% become guaranteed or it drops.

John_S: Thomas can be a piece to a winning team. The intangibles that he has will help any contending team and hopefully that is what this team will be in a few years.

Thomas could also believe that he deserves to be a starter due to how well he’s played the past couple of years and if that’s the case I would wish him the best as he findsa team who would start him.

I agree. And at his salary he is a steal. Hes done a great job. Exceeded all expectations. Im not saying get rid of him. But Seattle bias aside……..he isnt a building block. I just dont think he has the size. He has the skills and drive to have a nice career in the L. No shame in that. Plus its a real feel good coming home to Seattle story.

If you had to pick one player on that team you could keep it would be Cousins. If you could pick 2 it would Cousins and Patterson. IT might come in third.

  184. BarelyAble says:

Andy: Well, I pulled mine off a Sac Bee editorial.

Oh yeah I saw that number too in the editorial. Just saying they took bids for $180 minimum and then that was when the last deal fell through. Now if they relocate they lose parking spaces and this need to rebid. If they stay at rail yard they lose federal moneys. Still lots if work to do in one week

I don’t think NBA really cares how it gets paid for as long as it happens. IMO it should be smaller the subsidy the better for the financial health of the team.

Assuming we do get the team and a lottery pick what does the future after next season hold for us? What big free agents are out there? What will the draft look like following next season? I guess I’m looking beyond what will be a poor team this next season and looking for some talent!

  187. Jared S. says:

Sorry, but we did not have that. We had an ownership group, and a half-baked idea for a renovation of Key Arena. Nothing had been event remotely passed our city or state legislature . I don’t think this changes anything for Sacramento, but I don’t think our situation is exactly parallel to theirs.

The plan wasn’t half-baked. It was fully formed and the city was on board with it (heck, even Van Dyk was on board with it). It was Olympia that wanted to kick the can down the road, lacking the sense of urgency that was needed.
What we did have was the lease, which the NBA refused to respect.
So while no situation is exactly the same, it would hardly be “unprecedented” for the NBA to run out on a city even when there were compelling reasons not to.

  188. trolltossin says:

If the team does relocate I could see the Sonics trying to make a big push for CP3 which in that case they would keep Cousins. Tyreke is probably gone which is fine in my opinion. Now they could always go for the get the top pick in the 2014 draft and get Andrew Wiggins who is far and away the best prospect in years. Even if you land the #2 pick you get Jabari Parker

  189. Kevin Nesgoda says:

Cavs and Thunder build the right away. Always stock piling picks.

Cavs have three firsts this and two seconds. They have two first next year and three seconds! It’s unheard of to have that many picks in the NBA now. Especially when this is going to be a deep draft, not a spectacular draft, but full of solid role players.

They’re half-right. The pick that was traded is protected top 13 this year, top 12 next year and top 10 in 2015 and 2016. It becomes a second rounder in 2017.

CP3 can get the most money, live and market himself in L.A. and play with guys like Griffin for a championship if he stays with the Clippers.
IMO, there’s no way he’ll leave that, especially with what how the current SAC team’s built.

Tyreke will be gone this summer(S&T, I guess) and Cousins is the guy you’ve got to decide on.
Either you keep him, give him a fat extansion and built around him, or you’re trading him(most likely on draft day) for the best package you can get.

Now they could always go for the get the top pick in the 2014 draft and get Andrew Wiggins who is far and away the best prospect in years. Even if you land the #2 pick you get Jabari Parker

That’s pretty much the way to go.
In this day and age of the NBA you’re either contending or trying to (re)built your team.
As I view free agency as something you use to fill some holes with role players, the best way to get better is to collect as many assetts as possible to either let them grow together or use them to trade for a top notch player.

And given how many good prospects there seem to be in next years draft, it’s an easy choice.

Well their portion is paid for through the parking lease so technical it is a similar. They just would lose that money from the general fund and hope it is repaid with increases in property and sales taxes from the new arena spurring development/activity.

Yeah, the Sac plan is them giving money away, not lending it, and to pay for it, they are taking a loss to their general fund each year for the next 30-50 years, depending on the length of the lease for the parking lots. Especially since they need to remember that quality free agents probably arent going to go there over much better destinations. There is no guarantee the city will make money off the deal and its probably a higher probability they wont. Plus the fact that in time we will have two anchor tenants and they would only have one.

According to their arena website timelines it would have taken anywhere from 6 to 12 months after final bids were submitted. If they need to redo initial bids due to change in parties, location, and time since initial offer (which is needed) then add a few more months. So even if the speed it up it is something like 9 months and at worst a year plus

  233. BarelyAble says:

soundersfan84: Yea there are groups against it and i’m just guessing there will be a lawsuit over that.

They would need to also see why eyes the parking would be stats they want to make sure it doesn’t get to high or increase at too fast a rate. Thy lowers bid values. Also if people have to pay more to park and/or if there is a Los of the mall then tax revenue from downtown spending and parking may go to the suburbs. Lots f factors to consider that have yet to even be considered by the council

  234. trolltossin says:

Plus if you are a city council member in the back of your mind you can get the money back that is owed (70 million or Sleep Traing Arena) and then negotiate a better arena deal in hopes of doing what Seattle just did. If they have the ownership in place long term (if/when the Kingsleave) they could end up paying less in public subsidy and out of the general fund and also recoup the money owed Sleep Train or more likely gain Sleep Train thru collateral. I guess its rather suprising that the city council in Sacramento would just jump in head first in haste. Anyways not our city so I cant say too much because it wont affect my quality of life if there is less money for public needs.

Per the discussions last year, the cost of the arena was to be 390M , with the Maloofs responsible for 75M and AEG for 60M. That would make the city share 255M. The speculation was that Sac would get 230 from parking sales (which was a 9M yearly hit to the GF) and another 25M from . In addition, any shortfalls in parking revenue would be backed by the GF.

Now, they have one prospective owner, who wants to buy the other entity that was to provide major financing. And no one has really speculated on how this would affect funding. I’m just a guy at home; I’m sure billionaires have more pointed questions than this.

They don’t have exactly 6-12 months to come up with that funding and even then there are issues if it wouldn’t even be enough. Is the NBA truly going to wait 6-12 months for that and to even find out that it won’t be enough.

It does seem like a risky plan. I think the reason they’re resorting to that is because it’s so hard to raise taxes in California (at least without a public vote), even harder than it’s getting in our state. And when they tried to raise taxes for an arena in 2006, it lost 80% to 20%.
