Seahawks Game Day Thread

Let’s do as Brian asks and step off the roller coaster ride for a bit and enjoy the Seahawks. We can get lost in Seahawkmania for a few hours tomorrow, put on the blue and neon green, drink a little beer at 10AM (it’s okay, no one will judge you) and scream at the TV until you lose your voice.

Random Negative Fact:
Russell Wilson has never won a football game in the state of Georgia.

Counter to Negative Fact:
Russell Wilson hadn’t won a game in the state of Maryland until last Sunday.

X-Factor on Defense: Bruce Irvin
I wasn’t a fan of the Seahawks taking him at 15. Right now he’s a situational player and only really effective on passing downs. He missed 43 tackles this year and eight of his sixteen (10 solo, 6 assists) tackles this year were sacks. Sacks are what he was drafted to do, but we needed to see improvement in other phases of his game and we didn’t get the. In fact his tackles and sacks regressed as the season went along. Seven of his eight sacks came on an outside rush, one was from the inside.

His main issue in the run game is he pushes too far up the field, too fast. He does not help contain the running back. In fact he creates a bigger hole or cutback lane for the running back. When opposing teams ran at Irvin this year, Seattle gave up 7.2 YPC.

Not good.

Irvin is slated to take a majority of the snaps at one of the DE spots. Hopefully Gus Bradley has upped his football IQ this past week.

X-Factor on Offense: Golden Tate
Atlanta cornerbacks love to jump routes and are extremely susceptible to the double move. Golden Tate is going to have run extremely crisp routes and make sure he gets separation from Robinson or Samuel. He could have a big day as Atlanta’s safeties are terrible in help defense.

Match-up to Watch: Brandon Browner vs. Julio Jones
Will Richard Sherman expected to get more snaps against Roddy White, Brandon Browner is going to have to shutdown Atlanta’s big play receiver in Julio Jones. If Browner struggles like he did last week that is going to force Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor to shade to Jones, play off the line of scrimmage and that is going to mean a few things.

1. Linebackers are going to be responsible for Tony Gonzales all day with no safety help.
2. More open running lanes for Turner and Rodgers.
3. A lot more direct single coverage on Roddy White.

Random, Baseless Prediction:
Marshawn Lynch has two runs of 50 yards or more and finishes with close to 200 yards rushing.

Prediction:
Seahawks win this going way, 37-13. Atlanta doesn’t score a touchdown until fourth quarter garbage time.

Thoughtful post, Kevin! I love how you gave a counter to the random negative fact lol.

    Go Hawks!!!

  2. Gene Hunt says:

    Nice write up!

    Go Hawks!!!!

  3. Kevin Nesgoda says:

I knew Bruce Irvin was going to be a liability today. At least they pulled him.

  4. Laporbo says:

Might be getting that Hansen news pretty soon :)

  5. Laporbo says:

    Moderation? Serious?

  6. soundersfan84 says:

Back to back comeback wins wow

  7. dmase7 says:

    oh my……

    no words

  8. hughc5 says:

Man do we need some good news now. Im lost for words……

  9. Kevin Nesgoda says:

Pete Carroll called a terrible game. He left 6-10 points on the board in the first half and I was right about Irvin. He was horrendous. He quit on all non pass plays, didn’t even come close to sniffing a tackle. The Falcons knew this and gashed whatever side of the line he was on.

    CURSES!!!!!

  10. soundersfan84 says:

Now that the seahawks season is done back to going crazy over twitter comments saying its done, not done, done not done… oh wait a new bidder that wants buy the team and take them to some city non of us heard of. :P

last part was meant to be a joke.

  11. Paul Rogers says:

Well I’m disappointed, but I’m actually not too down about the Hawks. Russell Wilson is amazing and he’s ours for the next several years.

  12. Brian Robinson says:

There was a moral lesson for.Sonics fans in that game. No early celebrations.

  13. Danimal says:

Ug, really needed the win. Really no sports options til August when Hawks preseason starts. Love the Sounders, but not the same. Mariners are a joke, wrote them off years ago. Today is rough, wish we had a Sonics game to look forward to….

  14. Gene Hunt says:

The latest Sonics rumor on Twitter or perhaps a continuation of one I’m not sure at this point lol

    Jeff Brennan ‏@jay_eee_eff_eff
I believe we will hear an official announcement about the Sonics soon.

  15. Sean says:

Well….now I need some good Sonics news.

  16. James says:

Just saw a tweet on twitter that the Kings have been offered a sweet heart deal to move the team to Butte, Montanna. Sigh

    • soundersfan84 says:

Butte montana? why in the world would NBA go there? is this meant to be a joke?

    • traven says:

Maybe you were looking at a different tweet; but the Montana one I saw said they would move to Helena. That is just the Montana one. There is a tweet saying the team will be bought by the Sultan of Brunei and moved to a resort island in Indonesia. I figure that is a little far fetched as you would think the Sultan would have them play in Brunei. But Stern does want the NBA international. Don’t forget the tweet that says that the Church of Scientology will partner with Larry Flynt to buy the team.

  17. EJ says:

Last week: “The Hawks are going to the Super Bowl and the Sonics are coming back!”

Now: “Silly rabbit. You live in Seattle.”

  18. traven says:

Shoot, the Seahawks had a better season than any of us thought. The Seahawks weren’t even the Seahawks the first five games. Atlanta played better and won. That is how it goes. You should not even get bummed out about the Seahawks loss, or season.

  19. jenn_gp says:

Lets see if those who said Hansen and Ballmer were waiting for the Seahawks season to be over for an announcement were right. I’m still skeptical, but will eat crow and love it if I’m wrong.

  20. dmase7 says:

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5
Just talked to my friends at @kcranews in #Sacramento - who say there’s been NO activity at Gavin Maloof’s house…

  21. dmase7 says:

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5
The folks at @kcranews say neighbors say there has been no sign of moving trucks, etc, at the Maloof house in #Sacramento.

  22. SpeedCat says:

Where were the “guys in my face” today, Pete Carroll? No one kept you from gambling on the future of our team and our dreams. Bleh. Ack. Arg. Barf!!!

  23. paytontokemp says:

The only thing that’ll make me feel better is a “Sonics are coming home” announcement this week. But I’m sure the way Seattle sports go we’ll get the opposite.

  24. Paul Rogers says:

I believe Jeff Brennan does know the Nordstroms and I believe him when he said he was told things. I think whoever told him some things might not have taken into account the unpredictability of the Maloofs. He has consistently said that a deal was done and we would hear an announcement after the Hawks were done. Now we find out.

  25. kinsesu says:

I reaaalllly need an announcement to help get me out of this Seahawk gloom !!

  26. dmase7 says:

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5
Kevin Durant: “Seattle is going to welcome those guys with open arms.” #NBAKings

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5
Durant continued: “But you know, you feel for Sacramento losing their team.” #NBAKings

    Chris Daniels ‏@ChrisDaniels5
Kevin Durant: “Seattle is a great, great city, unbelievable fans. If the Kings do move there - they’ll have a wonderful home…” #NBAKings

  27. Heezon-fire says:

Brent Barry would be my choice to coach the Sonics. He played here, played under George Karl and Popovich, and has supported our cause consistently on NBA TV. He is sharp as a commentator and had great on court basketball smarts. In the meantime, I’m waiting for some good news with everyone else.

  28. SpanishGlove says:

So finally the plan about build an arena in Downtown Plaza isn’t possible? And if that’s the case, are we talking only about the 450m offer from Mastrov again or there’s another line of battle?

  29. 206er says:

@SpanishGlove, where did you hear that the sacramento downtown plaza arena isn’t possible? last i heard they were still attempting to move forward with that though it’s unclear how close they are to establishing a funding package. i also haven’t heard if there is a group absolutely solidified or if they are still trying to build their investment group. basically, i know it’s believed to be an uphill battle but i haven’t heard that it’s “not possible.” forgive me if i’m misreading your post…

    • SpanishGlove says:

I don’t remember, just see it somewhere, probably isn’t reliable. And my english isn’t very good so don’t believe me haha.

So Downtown plaza is a serious project? That’s not good anyway…

      Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  30. Paul Rogers says:

    Chris Daniels‏@ChrisDaniels5
#Sacramento Mall Owner says it is NOT part of group bidding for #NBAKings, via @kjohnsonsacbiz : http://ow.ly/gMlBL

  31. Sean says:

The more I think about it the more pissed I am that our offense had a game winning drive that was negated by a last minute weak effort by our defense. You’ve got to hold there.

    • hughc5 says:

I still feel numb from the game. It hasnt really hit me yet i dont think. I was and still am frustrated but not overly angry or screaming or anything. I have been so consumed with this sonics stuff i had one eye on the game and one eye on the web looking for something good sonics related i think im partly distracted. It’ll hit harder later probably

      • Sean says:

I was totally euphoric about the 4th Q comeback….and drinking quite a few Boundary Bay Scotch Ales….which put me in a “oh darn SOOOOO close” type attitude, but now I’m just really getting mad thinking how our defense really let the team down. We should have won that game after Russell did what he did in that game. I will say, though, give me that kid over Matt Ryan any day of the week.

    • Omar says:

You know what sucks? Most of us know that no rookie has ever made it to the Super Bowl, but today we lost after Russell had possibly his best game as a Seahawks quarterback. Dude had 385 yards passing and 60 yards rushing and 3 TDs.

The guy is something special. Hawks have a very bright future ahead of them. I can’t wait for free agency and draft talk to begin.

  32. 206er says:

well if the mall owner isn’t part of the group they need to establish if they are willing to well and what that price may be. if it’s really struggling that much i’d imagine the owner would be willing to cash out for the right price but who knows if they have some master plan to flip the mall into profitability. remember when u village by u dub was a struggling small mall? and now it’s nuts! in any case, acquiring land would seemingly add another wrinkle

  33. Heezon-fire says:

Seahawks create another great headline, only to be stolen again.

  34. LJG says:

I know it is just speculation, but…

    Aaron Bruski‏@aaronbruski

I just had a very knowledgeable Sacramento source tell me that they are “eerily confident” in the Kings’ chances of staying

    • Omar says:

“Eerily confident” doesn’t strike as confident to me at all.

      • hughc5 says:

Well chris daniels said there would be some ups and downs the next few days reported. So far im only hearin the downs for us. Hopefully we get the last “up”. If yacatch my drift

      • MartinH says:

        Agreed.
        “Eerily confident” = “Irrationally confident”
Which is good if you’re Jason Terry, but bad if you’re trying to buy an NBA team under the nose of several billionaires.

    • Mike Baker says:

Bruski’s math is screwed up. As soon as he can explain how $75 million dollars vanishes off the books for a local owner I’ll trust what he says.

      • soundersfan84 says:

Baker, you know what really makes it sad?

People actually believing in that funny math like they can easily just take the 77m off.

        • Sean says:

I’ve seen some Kings fans thinking that the Maloof’s debt to the NBA can just be assumed by a local owner as well, while it has to be paid off by Hansen immediately.

Also there seems to be the idea that Hansen’s $525m offer is for 100% ownership and that a local owner would only have to pay 53% of that to match the Maloof + the other dude’s share. Am I crazy or wouldn’t Hansen be paying the full price of the franchise simply for the controlling interest and the existing minority owners would still own their chunk of the team unless they decide to sell on their own?

Lots of fudging the numbers going on.

  35. MartinH says:

In other news, Mickael Gelabale is headed back to the NBA.
His European team has let him sign an NBA contract. He has one, but we don’t know which team yet. Rumour is that it’s Minnesota.
    Anyone else remember Jellyball fondly?

  36. Paul Rogers says:

    mitch levy‏@kjrmitch
Never know RT @Babyyao23 Only thing that will help heal the pain is if we hear some news from Chris Hansen this week. #keepingfingerscrossed

  37. Paul Rogers says:

He is retweeting a tweet from @babyyao23 and adding “Never know”. It’s better than if he added “I doubt it.”

  38. hughc5 says:

Oh ok. I’ll take it as a positive

  39. Brian Robinson says:

In practice one day Gelebale was goofing around and jumped too high, hitting his head head-on into the backboard. It was one of the funnier things ever. His hair protected him.

  40. Heezon-fire says:

I liked Gelebale. He is from France if I’m not mistaken. I had high hopes for him.
