Sports Weekend

I don’t have a lot of time this morning to write anything up but we don’t need to limit our discussion to the NBA.

What do you guys think the impact of suspensions to Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner will be? Losing not one but two DB’s is a big deal and Sherman has been a stud. It could really be a disaster for this season but I have to say that I think this franchise is built for 1-3 years from now. Sometimes that weird aberration that gets you a higher draft pick than you really deserve can push a team over the top into a long window of success.

As much as I am a die hard Husky fan I have a hard time being sad about a totally exciting Apple Cup that shows why we all watch the game. I’ve been working on an op-ed contrasting where sports fans sit now compared to 2006. That year the Sonics left, the M’s finished last in the AL West at 61-100. The Seahawks were also last at 4-12, UW was 0-12 and WSU 2-12.

Now the Hawks are amazing and the Husky program is rebuilt. The Sonics look to be coming back and at least the Mariners have Felix and a new stadium display. I couldn’t think of a single nice thing to say about the Cougs until this weekend when they showed that there is always hope in college football if those kids bring their passion.

Its going to take the Huskies a while to recover from that one. Bad loss.

I really enjoyed the Apple Cup, thought it was a really fun game. Better than watching my alma mater running a true freshman linebacker out at QB because all our scholarship QBs have torn ACLs.

Seahawks are screwed for this year. Thurmond and Trufant are going to give up a few big plays a game. They could play inspired for a few weeks and pull out a couple wins against St. Louis and Arizona. Think they’ll lose the other three though.

And go Mariners? They better get a bat in the offseason.

  2. Joecho2012 says:

that tragic year was 2008 not 2006, Mariners were 61-101, but Sherman and Browner being suspended will hurt the Seahawks Alot, Russell Wilson will have to step up big throwing over 300 yards per game for now, Darrell Beval will have to open the play book all the way and trust Russell Wilson, hes done well this season but we are going to need more from him

TERRIBLE weekend for sports in the 206. only thing that could had made it worse would be the mariners playing (zing). still heartbroken over dawgs football and b ball blowing it against sub-par opponents.

looks like glendale is not out of the woods yet with arena stuff this article seems pessimistic about their curent plan.

Man the loss of Browner and Sherman is huge. Both have been outstanding this year and who do we have to replace them? Trufant who is well past it and Thurmond who hasn’t played a game since…? I can’t remember the last game he played. Wilson will have to carry this team. Which if Bevell continues his completely unimaginative play calling, Its hard not to feel like the season would be over.

So that leaves us with rooting for the Mariners? I’m not a Mariners fan anymore. The ownership group and the front office have showed nothing but a commitment to be the Washington Generals of the MLB. Factoring into my decision is also the M’s continued idiocy over the arena.

As a Seattle sports fan I’m tired of expecting/cheering for mediocrity. What the heck is with our teams? Why is it so hard to get a few years of being a contender here(aside from the Sonics)? We’ve had more then our fair share of absolutely sh*t owners/ownership groups, players, coaches, and front office people. I’m just frustrated beyond belief I want one our teams to win a championship preferably before I die (I’m 28 so I’m not expecting to fall off my perch just yet *knocks on wood*). But its just so freaking frustrating.

As for the Apple Cup I’m not a Cougar fan and I’m happy they won.

I walked through the Mariners team store this past weekend, at the request of my 7-year old son. I was overwhelmed by the disdain and resentment that I felt as I browsed the pitiful walls of that store.

Should I get the signed Justin Smoak or Brendan Ryan bat? (They’re game used! AKA BRAND NEW.) A Chone Figgins jersey off the discount rack? An Ichiro bobblehead? An “I heart freight traffic” bumper sticker?!?

Look, I know the bile that’s creeping up my throat is green and gold. But this team has failed on so many levels. The Sonics fanbase is only one one pimple on the acne-ridden face of that franchise. I hope and pray that they can get it together.

My son loves that team. LOVES them.

So I went home and gave my wife a big ol’ kiss. Because, thanks to the Mariners, I got a tiny glimpse of what a divorce must feel like.

@leBleede, that quote is classis. made me laugh!

How do I get to my profile and change to my new email acct?

  10. Kingdome says:

Need a distraction from this weekend’s football, need the NBA back.

Watching Blazers vs. Pistons. Where are the fans? It is snowstorm empty tonight at the Palace.

  11. Peter Voorhees says:

Like the new site, Brian-thank you.

Seattle winters demand coffee houses, interesting live music, Mariners offense acquisitions, and NBA ball.

  12. Heezon-fire says:

68-67 nets w/11 min. Classic game!

  13. Brian Robinson says:

Keep the evening of Dec. 20th open if you can. Private and public parties are going to be a lot of fun.

  14. rrwrayiii says:

I find it very interesting the rumored suspensions were leaked. If nobody is allowed to talk about pending suspensions, how did the info get leaked? Sounds like a major blunder on the NFL side. If they both win appeals, the league will have a big black mark to add to the rest they’ve collected in the recent months. Here’s hoping they win appeals and get to keep playing!

  15. rambisfan-rmcd says:

    Anyone interested in going?

  16. jason. says:

    whats up with december 20th?

  17. jenn_gp says:

Yes, I’ll take the bait too…I’m interested to know what’s going on with 12/20 too Brian. It’s a Thursday night…would it be a party to celebrate more accurate arena renderings, or something bigger?

Dying to know. Now I’ll be all frazzled at work today.

  18. Sonicsman says:

Congrats to the Sacramento Kings for moving into 29th place in league attendance. They have passed up the Detroit Pistons. Got to build on the positives……

    http://espn.go.com/nba/attendance

    • Kingdome says:

It was a ghost town at the Palace last night. Looked like a snowstorm game where hardly any fans show up. Terrible team + terrible economy + arena in periphery = tough times for the Pistons. Don’t see them as a relocation candidate, just too many wealthy, civic minded locals there who won’t let them get jacked away. Red Wings and Pistons will probably end up with a joint venue downtown.

  19. Brian Robinson says:

Shawn is hosting a holiday party for Sonics fans at his place that is going to raise a few bucks for charity and be a really nice time for all of us to get together with him and a bunch of others. Shawn, Slick, KC and a bunch of others will be there.

  20. John_S says:

Speaking of attendance. Interesting article regarding the M’s and attendance. They have had a 51% drop in the last decade.

  21. Gene Hunt says:

Mariners attendance drop the worst in major US sports

    http://bit.ly/Y0TlHM

“The Seattle Mariners have suffered the biggest 10-year drop in attendance among the four major sports leagues in America, according to a new analysis by 24/7 Wall Street.”

  22. Brian Robinson says:

How can you have that on your record and not fire someone…

  23. jason. says:

absentee ownership = poorly run business.

  24. leBleede says:

The sad truth is that the Mariners current situation has them ripe for a slew of desperation signings. They have to show fans they CARE, but what’s the play? Fat contract for Adam LaRoche? Mike Napoli? Youkilis? ICHIRO?

I think I’ll pass on reading about the winter meetings…maybe settle in with a good book instead. Has anyone read “Catch 22?” I heard it’s good. A classic.

  25. Omar says:

This weekend was terrible. I was talking shit to my Wazzu friends all game long, and then the dawgs end up couging it. It was so bad, it was almost laughable.

The Hawks definitely gameplanned to “not lose” on Sunday and it cost them big time. I love Pete Carroll, but dude needs to have more discipline with his team. Playcalling on offense has been hit-or-miss… I think much of that has to do with Cable and Bevell splitting the calls.

Marcus Trufant needs to go. He can’t handle the slot receivers he lines up against. Look at what Titus Young did to him in Detroit and Devone Bess in Miami. I think the opposing QB has a passer rating of 130+ against Tru if I’m not mistaken. I really don’t want to see him play corner on the outside if Sherm and Browner are suspended. With that said, I can’t wait until Thurmond hits the field to pick up where he left off.

I have a good feeling against the Bears. Don’t know why. It will be a playoff-type atmosphere, Hawks are hungry motivated after an embarrassing, Bears are hurt, and the whole season is on the line.

  26. A Friendly Minnesotan says:

I’m watching the Kings vs my Timberwolves. This is the first game i’ve seen this season at Sleep Train arena in Sac, and it is pretty empty sadly…

  27. MartinH says:

Pre-tip photo of Sleep Train Arena on Twitter.
Looks like players’ families and little else. Sad.

  28. Ron in Yakima says:

Hi. I just ran across an article in the Seattle Times about the new arena. Here is the link: Arena article
