Top 10 Shawn Kemp Dunks of All Time

Enough with the Sac stuff for now.

My fave is probably #7. Not only is that one of the sickest moves I’ve ever seen a 6-10 guy make, but it’s also against the Lakers, who can go blow goats.

What’s your favorite?

  1. jenn_gp says:

I love #5 against Gatling. Shawn just goes right over him for the slam and Gatling knows he just got got…shakes his head and gives Shawn his props.

Most iconic has to be of course the Lister dunk. Love how Shawn points to him at the end.

  2. MonsterMashburn says:

#7 is my favorite! Calabro with an AMAZING call as per usual.

  3. SonicsUberAlles says:

    Great find! Simply amazing!

  4. Menace says:

#3 will always be my favorite. I remember watching that game with my Grandma. She came up off the couch after that happened. I think that was the dunk that put Kemp on the map.

Its funny to think that 5/10 of those dunks he would have been T’d up on in the new sensitive NBA.

#7 and #4. Disregard the carry and the travel.

  5. jeffshana says:

I showed this to my 10-year-old son last week after he said he didn’t know any “famous” Sonics.

    His education is ongoing!

  6. payton2kemp says:

lister blister! or the one he sits in Rodman.

  7. Kryten says:

The first one shown (#10). The quickness and elevation was unfair.

  8. catdawg says:

    #2 and #1 awesome

  9. Ben says:

My favorite Kemp dunk isn’t on that video. It was a tip dunk in the Finals against the Bulls where he launches parallel to the rim and has to reach back with his right hand and grabs the ball slightly behind him and completely even with the edge of the glass, fully outstretched. It is burned into my mind.

  10. Mike Baker says:

    On his own, #7
But everybody loves the lobs gp tossed up there, perfect lob passes, with Kemp finishing them, fantastic.

  11. Mike Baker says:

That back to the basket spin move Buck Williams schooled him on when we faced Portland came back to haunt the entire league after Kemp mastered it.

Buck was great but could never elevate like that, it’s the finish on those post moves that were so devistating.

    With authority.

  12. Kevin Nesgoda says:

Thanks, Xteve. We needed the change of pace.

  13. Xteve says:

Special mention for sure to the one where he teabagged Rodman in the 96 Finals. That was classic.

  14. TheDude says:

My favorite from that video would easily be #3 against New York. Unbelievable that he was able to adjust on the fly like that in mid air.

My favorite dunk of his isn’t actually on this video though. Mine is still the fastbreak tomahawk poster he threw down over poor Antoine Carr in ’96. I just remember him jumping so high so fast that it was sort of hard to process that he actually was eye level with the rim whilst dunking right on top of a guy who was pretty damn big.

Blake Griffin my ass. There’s only two dudes who ever did it better than Shawn, and that’s ‘Nique and Vince.

  15. jason. says:

#7! grabs the rebound, runs the length of the floor, stutter steps, takes flight and slams it with authority. if i was at that game i would probably have just started punching everyone in my immediate area.

  16. b-dawg says:

Another one of my favorites is not on this particular highlight reel. It was a dunk over Antoine Carr after a scramble for the basketball that Kemp gathered in at midcourt. They both rose at the rim, and of course Kemp just skied over Carr. I just remember Marques Johnson yelling, “Ohhhhh! Don’t do dat!”

  17. Paul Rogers says:

Here’s the one on Rodman, who disturbingly pats Kemp on the back afterward…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTPV2r2s1k8

    • TheDude says:

Shawn is the only guy I can think of who could completely humiliate an opponent by dunking on them, only to have that same opponent turn right around and throw Kemp some dap.

Yep. The Reign Man was truly a one of a kind.

  18. paytontokemp says:

#3 - I remember when I was watching that game. I think that was his rookie year? At that point he became my favorite player and still is my favorite to this day….. Gary is a close 2nd.

  19. criminy. says:

    sooo…..this is no good. right?

  20. rambisfan-rmcd says:

Well this isn’t the about the King’s….It’s about AuDrey’s departure and end of the article is interesting as Durant and Westbrook won’t be twenty somethings forever…..” Maybe the Thunder has a San Antonio Spurs-like run of success, decade after decade. But maybe not. If the Thunder success dips, fanlust for tickets will dip, too. It’s very possible it stays strong, but a partner like Chesapeake and the others help fortify for less-success times.

Bottom line, McClendon’s retirement from Chesapeake shouldn’t affect the Thunder now. But it could down the road.”

Too many classics, but that one at the garden is incredible.

  25. trolltossin says:

Hell Yeah. Thanks for the Video. How can you not be pumped up after seeing that montage of the REIGN MAN!!!!! Freaking Epic!!!

I wont say what I want to say but it involves excitement for……

  26. Ben says:

Carmichael Dave is at it again:

    Carmichael Dave ‏@CarmichaelDave
Soon an announcement will come, I believe to be a Burkle/Mastrov alliance. Downtown plaza arena location. Locked. Matching bid. Locked.

I believe in the end Sacramento keeps the team, and Hansen/Ballmer get brokered to a different team for sale. No expansion. That’s my guess.

    Carmichael Dave ‏@CarmichaelDave
“@ArenaSeattle: @CarmichaelDave Where would you put the #RelocationMeter for Seattle?” Of the Kings? If matched? 5%

    Carmichael Dave ‏@CarmichaelDave
    “@ArenaSeattle: @CarmichaelDave And the chances that they will match?” 99.9999999999999 1/9 %

  27. Peter says:

Well, Pacers lease extension is due this year, I think, and if they don’t get a subsidized lease, they can leave. He’s probably wrong, but it is plausible. IF SAC matches (unlikely), I could see the league brokering a deal for the Pacers.

  28. Peter says:

Other than that, I have no idea what team he is talking about. Bucks have until 2016 to work out an arena.

  29. Ben says:

I don’t think he’s referencing any team specifically. I think he’s rabble rousing.

  30. Squatch says:

    5 hours till the deposit

  31. Brian Robinson says:

I don’t think Carmichael Dave knows anything. I do think it will likely be burkel and mastrov and I believe they are committing to the new location based on a coversation I had down there. He knows less than I do and I don’t know anything.

  32. 79 Sonics Forever says:

I find it entertaining that C Dave said they will match the deal, when the only ones that know the details of the deal are the NBA and Hansen/Maloofs. Everything published is still only rumor and has not been confirmed.

  33. soundersfan84 says:

    Question

IF maloofs are the one that files for relocation can the NBA vote on relocation first than sale or does it have to be sale first?

    • trolltossin says:

They go hand in hand. If they approve relocation without sale it would be contingent on the sale. Now IM guessing the relocation can be approved with a stipulation that the league passes a sale.

If it goes that long with approval they will vote on both. Once Hansen is approved the relocation is pretty much self-evident.

    • the nightfly says:

The reason this is critical is that only 16 votes are needed for relocation, while 22 are needed for sale. If there appears to be a question of whether those 22 votes are out there, I could see Stern (if he really backs the sale) calling the easier-to-pass relocation vote first, then the sale vote when it only becomes a question of whether 22 members of the BoG want a team in Seattle owned by Ballmer & Hansen, or a team in Seattle owned by the Maloofs — the option of keeping the team in Sacramento having become moot.

  34. Sean says:

Well I’ve got to imagine that Carmichael Dave’s super podcast has allowed him to get several reliable sources deep inside the NBA.

    Or…..or….he’s an idiot.

  35. trolltossin says:

McCann Sports Law responded to my tweet asking how much time does KJ have to have an arena plan at least as far along as ours and a matching/better offer. Essentially if you took Hansen’s PSA aside and exactly where its at without the binding. Thats where the Kings HAVE to be in 3-4 weeks said McCann.

That is a TALL order and that is for them to get the NBA’s attention. Obviously the NBA would have to deny us but can KJ and his ad hoc plus city council get everything mashed out to the point they are shovel ready like Seattle in that time period?

Not to mention they must avoid lawsuits by people attempting to stop a city with a 14.3% Unemployment rate and losing companies plus school lacking appropriate funding, etc. TALL ORDER. Till I hear from people in the know that we are in trouble Im going bu this:

    IN CHRIS I TRUST!!!!!

  36. Myk says:

“I believe in the end Sacramento keeps the team, and Hansen/Ballmer get brokered to a different team for sale. No expansion. That’s my guess.”

    - This is why the entire argument about us being “insensitive” to the Kings fans is such bulls***. We are supposed to be sensitive to their needs when basically they are saying “ya go take a team…just don’t take ours”

    • trolltossin says:

Yeah they call us hypocrites while being hypocritical. Thats why I said the other day…..WE ARE ALL HYPOCRITICAL in someway some form on any given day. Its not that big od deal. Sensitivity is for 5 year olds. I felt like crap and was pissed off and wanted to K.O. some OKC fans but then you use that anger, sadness, etc. to strengthen your resolve to make right what has been wronged or you use it to further endeavors by other means.

It sucks or Sacramento if they become the Sonics but its not like Ill think that sucks. Yep Im a hypocrite on this day, the day before, and the days yet to come. So be it; I accept that.

  37. Myk says:

As for the dunks…#8 is the most iconic to me (i remember listening to that dunk on the radio on the way home from a little league game)…#3 is the most amazing to me

  38. jason. says:

I really wish i could bring myself to stop checking this site 50 times a day. How many visits a day are the rest of you at?

  39. Brian Robinson says:

It’s official. SonicsRising.com hit the “banned by the Chinese government” status today as a grass roots organizational site.

I only know because my buddy in China tried to access. #BigTime!

I bet Carmichael Dave is not big enough to be banned in China.

  40. Jared S. says:

I think the whole issue of hypocrisy is kind of a shallow, hollow thing. Yes, Sacramento stole the Kings from Kansas City under sleazy circumstances (was Clay Bennett taking notes?), but that was a while ago and Sacto has been a great NBA city. I don’t blame them for being outraged that the team might leave or trying to keep it from happening.

On our side, our team was stolen away for dubious reasons and under sleazy circumstances, and there wasn’t much we could do about it. Which put us in the lose-lose situation of either stealing a team ourselves or standing forlornly on the sidelines indefinitely. What’s happening now is pretty much the inevitable consequence of the malicious, unjustified hijacking of our 41-year old team—which we got via expansion, like all of our other teams prior to this (unlike most cities in the West or the South). So I don’t feel like a hypocrite—I feel like even more of a victim of what happened five years ago. My attitude is almost “Don’t blame us-blame the NBA for the situation it put us in.”

  41. SonicsUberAlles says:

  42. catdawg says:

a lot. About every few hours I sneak back so about 20 times a day (at least). Thinking about setting my alarm to go off tonight at 1:00 am just to check the latest news. I think, “get a life” however, when BB is just something I love so much and the Sonics such a huge missing part these past five years, I just can’t help myself. I’m addicted to the latest news.

  43. 79 Sonics Forever says:

Chris has been one step ahead from day 1, I have to believe he anticipated the risks and somehow it’s addressed in the Binding Agreement.

  44. SonicsUberAlles says:

  45. Sober says:

To much credit is given to Chris Hansen. This is the work of the NBA. They are the body of legal experts that know how to extract a team from one city and move it to another without challenge. The NBA works for the owners. They are nothing but a law firm specializing in sports law. Once the Maloof’s backed out of the Sactown arena deal the next option was a sale to Hansen and relocation. The Maloof’s in consultation with Stern and Hansen made that decision. Now the NBA is in motion to move the team. The NBA is not an impartial body waiting to decide. The BOG vote is the final step in a well crafted legal process.

KJ will be given a hearing. The NBA lawyers will destroy his plan. They work for the Maloof’s until further notice. He is out gunned. Too many issues remain. Seattle needs two teams in the arena to be financially viable. LA does, as well. New buildings are so expensive the deal will not work in Sactown with only one team. That is why the Maloof’s backed out.

    • GoSonics79 says:

Chris Hansen deserves a LOT of credit for his patience and just giving us a chance with Ballmer & Nordstroms to get the NBA back ALONG with getting the NHL back to this great city, so I disagree with you bud, he deserves a ton of credit in my opinion.

      • Sober says:

It is not my intent to diminish Hansen’s efforts. I only hope to enlighten you to the fact that he is not a lawyer but a financial expert. This legal work is outside his area of expertise. Ballmer does not do this either. They hire it done. The NBA is the contractor.

  46. Mike Baker says:

I’ve changed my mind, dunk #7.

  47. criminy. says:

    http://blog.seattlepi.com/sonics/2013/01/31/chris-hansens-offer-for-nbas-kings-likely-to-become-public/

  48. bobbywilbury44 says:

#1 against Alton Lister! Their all great, but that one is just awesome. It all goes back to Lister getting a fat contact after one decent year (86-87), then totally dogging it (A proud Sonic tradition among big men). Amazingly, we got a #1 pick from the Warriors for him. After that, he became a prime target for derision by Sonics fans. Kemp wrecked him here!

Mayor KJ likely won’t make any big announcement tomorrow. Story tonight on cbs13 at 10 on downtown plaza site. And a decade of studies.

    • korboko says:

      Why is he delaying?

      • Silvio says:

Because he still does not have his “whales” full committment to go public on this one.

All the stuff you’re reading currently is something that tries to buy them time, as they still don’t have everything in place they should have by now.

      • MarkS says:

        Probably because he has nothing.

      • Sober says:

The decision to spend hundreds of millions of dollars is not something one decides in a few days. It may sound good on first blush to those win no skin in the game but once you get into the details there is tremendous risk which must be resolved. Consider how long the Maloof’s and KJ worked together on the arena deal. In the end the decision was it was not economic for the Maloof’s to proceed.

        • Silvio says:

I think people know that this takes time, but that’s been the reason for most of us to be sceptical of their efforts.

They’ve got about two months to get their act together, get everything worked out with their arena to be on par with us and be willing to match the Hansen/Ballmer offer.

That’s what most think is nearly impossible within this short amount of time.

Though, KJ’s been talking about his “whales” and presenting them real soon(first he said last week, then this week) since last week and it looks like he still won’t be able to do so this week.

      • Sober says:

        What has changed?

        • trolltossin says:

Nothing? He just stopped calling press conferences because he didnt want to turn into that boy who cried wolf.

I honestly would be suprised if he had an announcement by Sunday. I bet that they may next week just because fans will get restless. The announcement will be vague and say that are still working on the “fine” details. The “details” being everything that needs to be done. The fact that it sounds like they are using the DT Plaza in their pitch to the NBA and they are just starting a feasibility study doesnt sound good for them which is go.od for us

  51. trolltossin says:

Um maybe a stupid question because both teams are based on the west coast. But dont alot of transactions that happen automatically happen based on eastern time? Since most financial institutions are based on the east coast (NYC). SO could it be that the deposit has already transeferred? Essentially because it is past midnight where the big money instituions are? I know its just semantics and doesnt really matter. All that matters is that the day has come.

  52. Kevin Nesgoda says:

    Okay,

Im about to totally change the course of this conversation as yet to see and I don’t know how we bring it back from

  53. Kevin Nesgoda says:

Troll, I dropped like $400 on that site last night. I was not kidding.

And I’ve only saw on Gonzaga game so far this year. Going to a game in Spokane in the next couple of weeks.

    • trolltossin says:

Nice….I kept it simple but Im doing mine in waves…..makes it so my better half doesnt grill me. Slowly but surely Ill add to the repotoire (butchered that word).

I always wanted to get to Spokane and see the Zags play at home in a high impact game.

      • Kevin Nesgoda says:

I had no safety net last night. Even bought a banana and mango tree for the house.

Wife has yet to find out about this… Should probably switch my screen name….

        • trolltossin says:

I will say following this saga ar too closely has taken me away from the zaniness that is the weeks leading up to LOI day in college football. I bought into that but I try not to get to emotional on that front when it comes to Husky Football.

Now this whole saga I just want an NBA team back just like 99% of the people on this site. I migrated because well the Seattle Times sucks except for some of the sportwriters

  57. trolltossin says:

True Story. I am an apartment manager (on site) and so when people move out and leave stuff which sometimes they leave a ton of stuff. Some people even just bone out and are gone and never return so I store their stuff for “x” amount of time. Well when it has been a “reasonable” amount of time I call some guys to take it away who do who knows what with it.

Before it goes I have the RoFR yes the RoFR to all that stuff. Anybody else have a RoFR story they would like to share? Yes Im that bored and I figure that it keeps us on topic of whats on-going in this saga but also takes us away from it enough to give our own personal RoFR stories. Dont know if I should post this…..

  68. BarelyAble says:

I have to say that all of the posterizing dunks are amazing! I know the term wasn’t around back then but Kemp certainly excelled at it. For me it has to be #5. Anytime you dunk over someone and they nod in approval and shake your hand means something.

Can we get a team already???

  69. Big Chris says:

I went to a Sonics game in Minneapolis in early 1994 where Kemp had something like 28 points and of those points there were 10 thunderous dunks to get there. Each dunk different from the previous ones. Being about the only Sonics fan there, I got a bit loud as time went on, nearly leading to a brawl in the stands with some drunken bozo T-pups fans who weren’t taking kindly to my enthusiasm and with the spanking th home team was getting. Two guys got escorted out, and I got warned that security might not be so nearby the next time. Best game I’ve ever attended!
