Time Crunch?

(excuse me as i get the cart WAY out in front of the horse)

Earlier today, in an interview with ESPN Radio, David Stern commented than we would know one way or the other about the outcome of the SEA-SAC saga by May 13th. While this may represent another extension of time for Sacramento to get their ducks in a row, my reaction to this news is more of a mechanical one.

As a Sonics fan, I really believe this is a done deal. We are getting the Kings. The decision making calculus used by owners in these situations relies heavily, if not exclusively, on dollar signs, commas and decimal points -- and we have those in spades, so let's just get past that now. Make sure to order your custom #15 Sonics jersey that says "Boogie" now.

But, when the league awards St. Chris and St. Steve the franchise (on or around May 13) they will have one week as owners before the draft lottery. Does this really matter? Nah. A new face at the table. However, the thing about the lottery is that its only five weeks before the actual draft. Is five weeks enough time to prepare for a draft? Yes, the NBA draft is much shorter and not nearly as in depth as NFL or MLB drafts -- but still, I think you'd need more than 5 weeks to prepare.

Are HBN preparing for this now? Do we have ANY basketball ops people in place? I am assuming as soon as the ownership of the team changes hands -- Petrie is gonna get shown the door (hopefully coupled with a few dirty looks for that RIDICULOUS Thomas Robinson trade) and Smart will be in the unemployment line, too. So, armed with that wild speculation -- how are we going to address this?

In case you are wondering, yes -- this is a veiled attempt to start a big discussion about Phil Jackson and Brian Shaw.
