A Crazy Long Article Asking "What If?"

The last two months have been all about where will the Kings end up. All the articles I have read have been arguments for either side. I have not found many articles about what if they do in fact move to Seattle. What then? What if the Kings become the Sonics? What should Hanson do with them?

So this article is stepping away from the arguments and just asking what if. I’m not saying that it is going to happen or even that it should happen. Just what if it happens? Just having some fun thinking about it. As we answer these questions, we will call the team the “If-Sonics.”

First let’s deal with the coach and then we’ll look at the team.

**WARNING THIS ARTICLE IS A LONG READ**

COACH:

There are many people who could step into this position and do a better job than Smart. That guy has driven fans and his players crazy. He’s got to go, so who should be calling the plays for the “If-Sonics?” Here’s 4 coaches who could do the job.

#1. Nate MacMillan

Mr. Sonic would be a great coach for this young group. He has experience with rebuilding teams and is loved by the community already, even if he did head south. Hands down one of the best coaches on the market. Seattle would be lucky to have him.

#2. Brian Shaw

Shaw is most known for his assistant coach position under the Great Phil Jackson. Shaw is a smart and likable guy with a knowledge of the triangle offense that has brought so many wins to L.A. Brian Shaw would be a great coach for Seattle for years to come.

#3. Stan Van Gundy

Van Gundy is an awesome coach. He took Orlando from literally last place to a constant playoff contender and even a championship appearance in 2009. Howard ended Stan’s tenure with Orlando, but Stan still has what it takes and could do a great job rebuilding the “If-Sonics” into contenders.

#4. Jerry Sloan

This is most far-fetched. Sloan is a legendary coach who would be incredible in Seattle, but he won’t do it most likely. He still has not won a championship so he would probably pick a place like Brooklyn or New York where they already have the pieces in place to contend. Sloan’s a legend and it would be a privilege to have him as our coach.

Conclusion:

Hire McMillan or Shaw. Also pray Jackson becomes our President/GM and serves as mentor to our coach.

THE TEAM:

So as I go through this evaluation keep in mind this is from a quick rebuilding mindset. Even though Oklahoma City really hurt Seattle natives, I would say they did a phenomenal job in quickly rebuilding their franchise into a competitive and now superior team. That’s what Hanson should do, base their strategy off a proven successful model - the Thunder. Pick a star as the face of your franchise, gain talent in the draft, and trade for veterans with leadership skills.

We’ll go player by player looking at the stats and payroll and then sum it all up at the end. Let’s start with the..well..starters.

Starting Point Guard - Isaiah Thomas

(Under Contract - $0.85m in 13/14)

Let me just say I’m biased, as a Husky fan I love Thomas. He was awesome for us at Washington, but I do think he has proven himself. Thomas was the last pick of the 2011 draft, he showed some real ability last year and has kept constant with his numbers. Thomas is averaging 14 ppg and 4 assists in only 27 minutes per game. Thomas is a keeper. He does very well on the court, is a great person off the court, and only costs a little under one million next season. Thomas needs to keep improving especially with being a true point guard. We need more than 4 assists a game coming from our main ball handler to be an elite offense. It might be wise to find another player who can truly run the offense.

Conclusion: MUST KEEP BUT AS BACK UP

Starting Shooting Guard - Tyreke Evans

(Under Contract - $7m in 13/14 w/ qualifying offer)

Evans was the rookie of the year back in 2010 when he averaged over 20 points per game, and over 5 assists. That was three years ago now. The past few years Evans has been progressively getting worse rather than getting better. This should scare Hanson, although I blame the Kings organization for Evans’ lack of progress. Evans is a restricted free agent this summer, which means he is going to get PAID. I think the Kings should be the ones paying Evans next fall. Tyreke has way too much upside to just let him go for nothing. Plus, He has a lot of time to mature and figure out exactly what his game is. Evans is definitely worth it.

Conclusion: KEEP (unless way too much)

Starting Small Forward - John Salmons

(Under Contract - $7.5m 2013/14, $7m 2014/15 with team option)

The oldest man on the roster and the guy with the biggest check this past year needs to go. This is a no brainer. Any trade made this offseason should include Salmons and his inflated contract. Salmons was signed based on what he used to be - a proven scorer. Nowadays he averages just 8.9 points per game. He is a good role player, but not worth the money for a young team in a rebuilding phase.

Conclusion: MUST TRADE

Starting Power Forward - Jason Thompson

(under Contract - $5.6m 2013/14, $6m 14/15, $6.4m 15/16, and $6.8m 16/17)

Jason Thompson is a hustle player. He has semi-decent numbers but he always plays hard. Also he’s pretty cheap for his level of production. My only beef against Thompson is that he’s signed for so long. He’s under contract till 2017. If he continues to play as he has that long contract shouldn’t be an issue, but if he decreases as a player one might not be surprised to see him traded next year. Thompson’s young enough and good enough to keep around.

Conclusion: Keep

Starting Center - Demarcus Cousins

(Under Contract - $5m in 13/14, $6.5m 14/15 with qualifying offer)

Cousins is an enormous talent. No one in their right mind would argue against that. There are times that one just drools at the plays he makes. Cousins has the potential to be the next Shaquille O'neal. He’s not as tall as Shaq, but he has the bulk. Despite all this talent Cousins is still talked about in trade rumor after trade rumor, how can this be? Immaturity, simple as that. When a franchise relocates there should be a star that is known as the face of the franchise e.g. Kevin Durant. I have gone back and forth on Cousins, but he just isn’t that kind of star. He has proven that his attitude is beyond childish, and he is not about to change. As a rebuilding franchise, it just does not make sense to not be able to rely on your star. He could get us another lottery pick in this draft and get rid of our Salmons problem. I hate to say it, but he’s got to go if we want to be contenders. Although should the “If-Sonics” keep Cousins I will not protest, I understand how hard it is to trade way such a talented player.

Conclusion: TRADE (unfortunately)

Now let’s take a quick look at the bench

Marcus Thornton - SF

(Under Contract - $8.2m in 13/14, $8.7m 14/15)

As much money as the Kings are paying for Thornton, he should be a starter. Regardless he is a good player with a bright future.

Conclusion: Keep (unless needed in a trade)

Patrick Patterson - PF

(Under Contract - $3.1m in 13/14, $4.3m 14/15 w/ Q.O.)

The biggest asset received by the terrible trade of T-Rob to Houston was Patterson. I still do not understand the trade, but I have come around to liking Patterson’s style of play. He is a great player off the bench and if given more time could be a decent starter and for just $2m. Nice.

Conclusion: Keep

Jimmer Fredette - PG

(under Contract - $2.5m in 13/14, $3.2m 14/15 w/ T.O., $4.5m 15/16 w/ Q.O.)

The Jimmer has not been playing up to his draft status. Jimmer’s only averaging 7 points per game, but he’s a fan favorite. I think of him like a young J.J. Redick. I think he could step up and be more productive with a few more minutes a game. Keep him around and see what happens.

Conclusion: Keep

Travis Outlaw - F

(under Contract - $3m in 13/14, $3m 14/15)

Outlaw is a good veteran player who has proven himself to be a good role player for a decent price.

Conclusion: Keep

Toney Douglas - PG

(Under Contract - $3.1m in 13/14 w/ Q.O.)

Another one of the players received from Houston was the quick Douglas. Douglas can be a dynamic scorer off the bench as seen in stretches with New York, but his productivity thus far with the Kings has been minimal. 7.6 points a game with under two assists. Douglas is another unrestricted free agent this offseason, I don’t think the team should match an offer that exceeds his current salary.

Conclusion: Does not matter, really.

Chuck Hayes - C

(Under Contract - $5.7m in 13/14, $6m 14/15)

In his defense Coach Smart has not used Hayes very wisely. Still when he is on the court you can’t really tell. Hayes is averaging just 2.7 pts and 4 rebounds in over 16 minutes a game. Tsk tsk.

Conclusion: TRADE (if possible)

James Johnson - PF

(Under Contract - $4m in 13/14 w/ Q.O.)

In ten minutes of action a game Johnson is averaging about 5 points, 3 Rebounds, and a block. That’s decent for as many minutes as he gets. He too will be testing the waters this summer in free agency. Should the Kings match an offer? Meh.

Conclusion: Keep (if price is right)

Cole Aldrich - C

He will not be on the roster in a few months. He was payed 2.5m this year for a whole 2 pts and 2 rebounds in 7 minutes. I love the guy but he is outrageously overpaid.

Conclusion: Goodbye Sir.

In Summary:

The Kings have some good pieces; Tyreke Evans, Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Thornton, Patrick Patterson, and the Jimmer. Some decent role players; Jason Thompson, and Travis Outlaw. And some players that just need to go; John Salmons, Demarcus Cousins, and Chuck Hayes. Lastly, the Kings have one enigma, Tyreke Evans.

Biggest Needs:

1. Veteran Leadership

2. Better Point Guard Play

3. Better Forward Play

4. More Productivity from Bench

5. Help Down-Low (back-up Center)

...So basically everything.

SO WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT IT?

If the BOG rule in Seattle’s favor, Seattle has bought a team with a bright future. But there are some changes that need to be made. The “If-Sonics” are young, and maybe they are too young. The Kings need some veteran players to help guide the youngsters in how to be an elite NBA team. Free agency could be the route to get some veterans. There are several stars that could add some talent and experience in the offseason through free agency. Let’s take a look at the the top ten free agents the “If-Sonics” should target this summer.

FREE AGENCY:

#1 PG Chris Paul - Clippers

Chris Paul is the best player on the market this summer. Everyone knows that. The question is whether or not a team can sway Paul away from LA and all those ally-oops for somewhere new. Honestly, I don’t know if Paul would pick more cash over staying in a system designed for him and all the bright lights of LA, but heck why not try! The “If-Sonics” should have lots of cash to throw at the best PG in the game. He would do well amongst Evans and Patterson, and he could teach Thomas how to truly run an elite offense. This would be a dream come true.

#2 PF Josh Smith - Hawks

This is the most likely scenario I could see this happening. Smith obviously wanted out of Atlanta before the trade deadline and now he’s going to walk out looking for a max contract. His stats speak for themselves, he is worthy of a max contract in my opinion. The only thing is his attitude, but I would take Smith’s attitude over Cousins’ any day.

#3 SG Manu Ginobili - Spurs

Ginobili is a proven winner. He has shown tenacity and a fierce style of play that could be very beneficial for the “If-Sonics” to learn. He would be a great scorer off the bench. If it were not for the talent and youth of Paul and Smith, Ginobili would be the #1 target this offseason.

#4 PG Brandon Jennings - Bucks (Restricted Free Agent)

Jennings has a bright future that’s for sure. At the same time his present play is pretty stellar. He would be an improvement at the point guard position and could bring some much needed levity to the style of play of the “If-Sonics.” That’s if the Bucks are willing to let him go.

#5 SG Ray Allen - Heat (player option)

Ray Allen needs to be a Sonic next year. After bolting from Boston and allying himself with the enemy, Miami, Allen has no where to truly hang his hat (i.e. his jersey). He was a Sonic for his best years and was loved by the city. He could opt out of his contract with Miami and come home. That’s why I am hoping Miami wins it all this year so Allen gets the championship out of his system and starts thinking about his legacy instead. Allen could be a huge benefit to both the maturity of this team as well as putting points on the board. Can’t you hear it, Calabro exclaiming “Allen from downtown!”?? *Sigh*

#6 PF Paul Millsap - Jazz

Millsap is a monster. He can score, rebound, and play some killer defense. He would be a huge improvement over Jason Thompson. He might be too expensive though as many teams are in the hunt for a good Power Forward this offseason.

#7 SF Rashard Lewis - Heat (player option)

This one is simply sentimentality. Lewis was awesome in the mid-00’s with Allen. Then he went to Orlando and became what he is today - overpaid and getting older. Lewis can still make some great plays. If he is willing to come at a decent price, Seattle could have both Allen and Lewis back. That would be fun to watch on opening night!

#8 SG OJ Mayo - Mavs

I know what you’re thinking, “I thought this guy said we needed veterans who played smart.” I know Mayo has had some rough spots and plays sometimes without thinking, but I still believe Mayo could be a top-notch scorer in this league and he has shown some improvement in his defense. Again another scorer off the bench could come in handy.

#9 C Greg Oden - No Team

Back in 2007, Oden was thought to be the next franchise big man. He along with Durant were supposed to bring the Pacific Northwest into relevancy again in the NBA. While Durant went on to become one of the best players in the NBA, Oden got hurt over and over again. He only really played 1 out of 5 seasons for Portland, but when he did play he looked pretty good. There’s still some hope for Oden, not much, but enough to take a chance on him for the right price.

#10 C Emeka okafor - Wizards (ETO)

Now to even get Okafor into free agency means he has to terminate his contract with Washington where he is still owed 14 million. So this is a big if, but should he enter free agency he could be a great fill in for the “If-Sonics” should we trade Cousins. A lot of “if”s.

Honorable Mentions:

SG JJ Redick - bucks

We already have Redick 2.0 in Jimmer.

PG Derek Fisher - OKC

Not productive enough to justify his sigining despite great leadership.

THE DRAFT:

The “If-Sonics” will have one pick in the 1st round and another in the 2nd. One could assume that the “If-Sonics” will be busy on draft night and be looking to add more new blood to the mix and getting some problems out of the way at the same time. But if everything stays the same, we will have a pick somewhere around #7 with odds of getting a top 3 pick at 15% and number one at 4.3%, but you never know.

With a number #7 pick there are many potential solutions to some of the troubles plaguing the “If-Sonics” here’s five potential picks at #7 (based on who is most likely available at that pick, so no Noel or Smart).

#1. PG Trey Burke - Michigan

Michigan played superbly during the Tournament this year, and no one played quite to the level of Burke. He stepped up and showed why he was thought of as one of the best players in the country. He facilitated the ball well and made the big plays his team needed. He could step right in and start for the “If-Sonics.” He has the ability to score like Thomas, but has better guard skills than the much loved former Husky.

#2. SF Shabazz Muhammad - UCLA

Muhammad has been talked about so much that I don’t think I really need to say all that much about his play, just that I think he would be a great scorer and a potential James Harden.

#3. SG Victor Oladipo - Indiana

Oladipo played brilliantly all year showing he could score, facilitate, and play stellar defense. Oladipo reminds me of a smaller Luol Deng with speedier wheels.

#4. SF Glenn Robinson III - Michigan

He did not show it all that well in the last part of the tournament but Robinson had a tremendous year. He has the potential to be a great forward on a team that needs help at that spot. This might be a little early for Robinson to be drafted but he could do very well with the “If-Sonics.”

$5. C Alex Len - Maryland

Len was great all year long. He has the tools necessary to be an elite Center in the NBA. Although I doubt he’s available at #7.

And now the 2nd round.

#1. SG Tim Hardaway Jr. - Michigan

I know, I know, “Really, Michigan again!” But Hardaway Jr. has tremendous upside and could be the most NBA ready player in the draft this year. His lacking play in the Championship game could have him slide down into the 2nd round, and if he’s available do not be surprised for the “If-Sonics” to pick him up without any hesitation.

#2. C Jeff Withey - Kansas

Another former mid-lottery pick could slide into the 2nd round. Kansas has made a business in producing decent big men like Nick Collison and Cole Aldrich. But there’s something about Withey that makes me think he’s better than all the other centers Kansas has put out recently. He can score and defend well, he’s got great character, and he’s got the strength a big man needs. Withey could make a great impact next year.

#3. SF DeShaun Thomas - Ohio St.

Thomas has grown as a player. THomas has reeped the benefits of being a part of a great team under great leadership. He has shown that he can lead a team and provide points in a jam. He is a great shooter.

#4. SG Archie Goodwin - Kentucky

Goodwin had a decent year going from playing second fiddle to Noel to being the go-to-guy when Noel went down this season. He averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.

#5. SG Allen Crabbe - Cal

Crabbe was the player of the year for the PAC-12. He averaged over 18ppg and 6 rebounds while dishing out about 3 assists. He should sound very familiar, he’s very similar to Goodwin with a little less upside but more immediate scoring.

And for anyone wondering, Dieng from Louisville if he’s still on the board. Here’s some players to invite to try out should they not be drafted this year

#1. PG Payton Siva - Louisville

Siva is an amazing person. No one can doubt his character. He also is a pretty amazing little point guard. He is widely known as one of Pittino’s favorite players because of his character and skills. He is a facilitator and a scorer when his team needs him to be. More than any other player I saw this year, Siva reminded me of Chris Paul. Siva is legit.

#2. PG Aaron Craft - Ohio St.

Craft is another point guard who could fall in-between the cracks this year. He is a hard-nosed fighter of a player who plays with amazing intelligence. His defense is beyond any of these other players in the draft, and he has some skills that could be honed into being a great facilitator. Mike Conley anyone? Also, you won’t have to worry about his character, he’s a stand-up guy.

#3. PF Ryan Kelly - Duke

The former lottery destined player took a huge hit in his draft stock with his injury this year and even after coming back to score a career high 36. He still might be on the outside looking in. Kelly would be a great addition for any team looking for a shooting big man.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

There are many decisions to be made. Who to keep, who to trade, who to draft, and who to coach. Whatever happens next week and wherever the team ends up this summer is a big one for the “If-Sonics.” I’m just one fan, saying what I think would be cool. So what do you think? What would you like to see happen? If the Kings become the Sonics, what do you think they should do?

Thanks for Reading.
