Chris daniels saying there is no bog meeting scheduled at the all star break. Isnt there always a bog meeting at the all star break?

  2. BarelyAble says:

Again Lynn Thompson is wrong…says EIS will be done in 9 months. If she is running point on this shouldn’t she be up to date with what the mayors office is saying?

  3. Ron in Yakima says:

Mayor Johnson to Hold 2 P.M. Press Conference to Discuss Large Equity Partners

  4. Brian Robinson says:

Where did you see the press conference announced? I haven’t heard it.

  5. Ron in Yakima says:

My bad. I accessed Sactown royalty through an archived history link. Current SacTown page has no mention of presser today.

  6. jason. says:

can we implement a solid sources twitter policy from now on? everyone needs to stop posting tweets from guys with 17 followers. its bad enough people repost BS from carmichael dave let alone from some guy who is clearly just at home on the couch with 0 sources and 0 inside knowledge.

  7. MarkS says:

I think I spotted the Sacramento whale. It’s the old bag in the background of the picture.

  8. BarelyAble says:

In summary, the live talk was a waste of time and basically explained the situation to the casual fan that isn’t as into this as we are.

    • jason. says:

live talk was pointless. just a bunch of people putting out their best case scenarios and hoping someone agreed with them. still a shocking amount of people out there who think sacramento can just simply match the $ amount.

      • Matt Parker says:

They exist in a vacuum. Carmichael Dave and that Ziller guy do nothing but artificial inflate the hopes of the fans. Why has the NBA existed in Sac this long anyway? Once the Kings leave there’s no reason to go back. Give an expansion team to San Jose.

    • Myk says:

Don’t forget we got to continue to see how little Lynn Evans knew about the process…it is hard to deal with cause I can’t decide if she is biased or just flat out dumb.

  9. Andy says:

    Rundown of the live talk:
Sacramento really hopes the BOG won’t approve the sale.
Still no logical reason why that would actually happen presented.

  10. Omar says:

So if BOG meeting for sale approval is in April, how does that give Hansen enough time to file relocation?

  11. BlueReloaded says:

Wait, is it Maloofs responsibility to pay back the Sacramento $67MM loan, or is it Hansen’s responsibility when they move the team? If this SacBee article is correct, that is an incredibly stupid arrangement.

    http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/27/5143673/if-kings-leave-what-about-owners.html#storylink=omni_popular#storylink=cpy

    • Andy says:

The loan would come due immediately upon the move of the team, which would then be owned by Hansen. It’s the kind of thing you can dangle in order to keep from bloodying your knuckles in the fight to move.

      • BlueReloaded says:

Yea, I understand it and it’s not my money, but it just seems like a horrible arrangement. I am sure it was built into the valuation/payment of the sale thought.

    • The Original says:

Read about that recently. I think there is a possibility that the $525M figure has the debt repayment as a part of the total.

  12. Menace says:

I likes Marcos Bretons comment: “I appreciate the comments on here but I think many of them are driven by what the commenters would like as opposed to what may happen”

Its pretty easy to see this in Sactown fans. But it lives here as well.

  13. jason. says:

i think brian’s recent comments really illustrate how while the inflated purchase price is a huge factor the real draw for the NBA could be the hansen/ballmer ownership group. think about it, basically unlimited money supplied by forward thinking diehard basketball fans owning a team in what all reports are pointing to will be the best arena in the country in one of the best cities in the country. think about how excited you are knowing 10% (if even) of what chris has planned, then think about how in all likelihood the NBA is 100% aware of his plans, are their minds completely blown? is this a man they want to be in business with? i think so. the NBA will not deny visionary GAME CHANGING leadership for a guy like ron burkle. take emotion out of it and compare what seattle is offering against what sacramento is offering we win 10 out of 10 times.

  14. Silvio says:

    Second that.

I know we’ve got a great chance and a lot going in our favor as of right now, but we shouldn’t belittle them in SAC.
It sometimes even looks like making fun of their efforts and that’s certainly something we shouldn’t do.
I mean, we’ve been there, we’ve been laughed at and it certainly didn’t feel all that great back then.

    • Kevin Nesgoda says:

Exactly! We’ve been in their shoes waiting for our Knight to save us only to be left standing in front of the Dragon Stern.

Have some compassion and empathy for our Sacramento brethren.

  15. Otto says:

“@ChrisDaniels5: So imagine if you will, a #Seattle regional network featuring #Sonics, #NHL, Mariners, Sounders, etc, & the possible revenue. #NBASeattle”

    Dare to dream!

    • Menace says:

That would be awesome. Best case scenario for ALL the teams.

      • Kevin Nesgoda says:

And geographically we have the biggest market. To bad it includes Idaho, western Montana, BC and Alaska.

        Ie… where no one lives.

      • Myk says:

I don’t see how you could have all four of those team on one RSN…

        • Otto says:

Why is that? Altitude does it

        • Ghost of Steve Scheffler says:

With an overflow channel. MASN does this to manage the Capitals, Nationals, Orioles, and Wizards. It’s doable, but work would be needed.

I’d imagine it’d be much more Sounders replays than live games, though, like now. Being on free-to-air TV for most of the games has major advantages for them. They’re easy to find and access.

          • BarelyAble says:

Actually the nationals and capitols are on Comcast dc, but I think it is feasible especially with soccer taking up so few dates

          • Menace says:

Im sure Root would welcome any overflow games they could get. Sure beats the games they broadcast now that the Pac-12 network is up and running.

They can bump that Southwest Arkansas State vs Northeastern Michigan type games they play these days.

          • Ghost of Steve Scheffler says:

My mistake with the Capitals, but unless something changed this year, the Nats are on MASN. So two teams, same sport, at the same time, with similar starting times. They make it work.

        • Myk says:

Good to know. It’d be nice if Hansen and Ballmer show their tech savvy in other areas of the game such as their RSN…

Including being able ot access games via iTunes and your mobile device (like how the Pac 12 network was supposedly going to work)…

    • Xteve says:

I’ve heard that the Mariners don’t want anything to do with this. Not surprisingly.

  16. Menace says:

Is there another press conf today?

  17. jason. says:

these google image search whale pics that they keep posting on sactown royalty are pretty sad. isnt that the term vegas uses for marks theyre trying to get the most money out of? ive always thought “whale” was a derogatory term. if i was some ultra rich guy id be pretty bummed i was being referred to in such a manner.

  18. Peter says:

I don’t see any reason to announce an BOG meeting for the Sale vote until Sale is announced. However, the relocation committee has a lot of work to do to vet a move. it takes at least a month, month and a half. Also don’t see why they’d do that when Hansen doesn’t even have the team yet.

  19. Peter says:

    I mean formally announced

  20. Nap says:

Are the Sonics playing on TV tonight?

  21. the nightfly says:

Brian, you mentioned on KJR that, although people were expecting the vote to approve the sale at the ASG, you thought it could happen sooner. Could you give us any more details on this?

You also mentioned that a key date for sale approval is 2/1, when the deposit becomes non-refundable. I was trying to figure out why that would be the case, and came up with this theory (DISCLAIMER: I am not a lawyer, nor have ever played one on T.V.): It all comes down to the “tortious interference” that has been mentioned here before. If, before 11:59 P.M. on 1/31, KJ holds a presser to announce that Burkle, Mastrov, and Ellison have all come on board and are offering $600 million for the franchise, it’s merely an offer they can freely make. If, however, they do so once the clock as struck midnight and the deposit is non-refundable, it becomes tortious interference, and Hansen/Ballmer can immediately slap a lawsuit on both the city and the investors. Therefore, it would stand to reason that any self-respecting whale would be careful to make their proposal before the end of the month, which gives them until Thursday night to finalize what would have to be a pretty involved “offer-to-make-an-offer,” as would Sacramento itself. Therefore, if we haven’t heard any such announcement from them by the time the clock strikes 12 Thursday night, it’s a pretty safe bet that there isn’t going to be any such offer, period. Am I onto something here?

    • trolltossin says:

They will announce it before then; in fact I have a feeling the outline for the proposal they have including an arena (the Downtown Plaza) will be put out there on the 31st. They wont divulge the details but they may say that the offer will be fair and competitive and will be pitched to the NBA. For senistivity issues they will not divulge many details other than a location and the offer being fair and competitive and they may go as far as saying it will be a better deal financially for the Maloofs.

So there will be no details as to what the offer would be, what the arena will be other than its downtown location. That leaves them a lot of leeway to work out the nitty gritty till its time for KJ and the WHALES go to the BoG.

Im not worried though; the only way I would be worried is what Brian said in the podcast and Ellison getting involved and all the other intangibles of him being involved that would scare Brian. Brian knows more than he is sharing and he is confident. That should give us all quite a bit of confidence.

    • Brian Robinson says:

I think that the NBA generally does not want billionaire owners who commit to pursuing the ownership of NBA teams to feel like it is a waste of time or they could get burned by doing so. It would strongly discourage future potential owners from putting in the time and energy that Chris and Steve have. They want that pursuit because ultimately it adds to franchise values.

Also I think contractually it strengthens the position when money has changed hands. I just think in general the NBA starts to hit a point where they can say “we are too far along this path.”

If Thursday rolls around and Kevin Johnson still has not brought his “whale” to the table then Chris will call the league and say “is there anything on the horizon that I should know about before I put this $30M on the line?” and they will give him the nod. At that point it becomes even more disingenuous to accept another bid.

      • trolltossin says:

Exactly its not like Chris only has Mastrov money and has a bunch of smaller investors. This is BIG TIME money that Hansen’s group of investors have. If it was an ownership group with equity (total amonst all investors) around 1-2 billion then it may be a little more cumbersome moving forward. This is an out of sight ownership group.

Honestly when it comes to Ellison I have a feeling if he is serious about owning a team in San Jose in the future he will use the business model that Hansen is showing as we speak. Plus it is a good thing for Ellison’s pursuit if Sacramento leaves. He is then far more likely than he is now of getting a team to San Jose. If Sacramento stays he will not get an opportunity for San Jose. There is no way the NBA will have 3 teams (10%) of the league in Northern California

  22. Peter says:

They probably wont formally announce the sale until after Ballmer/Hansen’s finances are vetted, and all the I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed. When they formally announce the sale I would guess they would schedule an vote for the sale. Considering there’s a month or more of relocation committee work to vet any move, I don’t see them voting on sale/move both in April. They have to have the relo committee’s findings/recommendation in hand before they vote on any move, and if they voted on sale in April that would push the relo vote back to June/July. I think relocation has to be applied for before the relo committee will vet any move, so unless the $30 mil is for the maloof’s to file for relocation I would expect Hansen to be the owner before April.

    • trolltossin says:

If the sale is finalized by the league and vetted and all that this is over. Once the sale is done and approved the move is an inevitability. Sacramento will go ahead and do what they are doing because in the probable out come the sale is finalized they will have an offer on the table and the groundwork laid for an arena and be pretty much where we were just a few months ago. They will then petition for an expansion team or start looking at the Milwaukee’s of the league that may or may not be on the market relatively soon. Maybe even a scenario that we have seen now where Mastrov/Burkle offer a crazy amount of money to Milawaukee’s owners or whomever and see if it is an offer they cannot refuse.

In my opinion this is already past the point of no return for the Sacramento Kings franchise as it is today. Hansen would not have announced the agreement or signed it and announced in correspondence with the NBA and the Maloofs yet and wouldve waited til closer to the Feb. 1st date if it had a decent chance to be undermined at the last minute. He wouldnt have given a local investor group and KJ this much time if it was reaslistically going to be a problem in the acquisition.

Hansen couldve waited till Wednesday and said tomorrow (the 1st) there will be a non refundable deposit. Dont listen to the Sacramento Bee they are just trying to sell newspapers and keep things going for there own purposes.

Notice how David Aldridge and Adrian Wojnarowskihavent said much later because they already broke the news that this is inevitably going to be approved and till it is by the BoG its a non-story other than this region and Northern California.

  23. Peter says:

If Aldridge is correct and Ellison turned down matching Hansen’s offer before the sale, I don’t think he should have the right to offer anything now. He’s probably out anyways if he did that. Didn’t Cook say Ellison would have an answer by tomorrow?

    • trolltossin says:

If a local investor was given an opportunity then KJ has no real excuse anyways. All he can say then is the HE didnt get a chance to hand pick some guys that the Maloofs should sell too. Sorry KJ thats not how this works. The Maloofs can sell to whomever. They couldve sold to Ellison but didnt and chose Hansen. Cry me a river KJ because you didnt get YOUR choice boo who

      • Sean says:

I won’t belittle any Sac efforts, but I do disagree with their notion that local owners were never given a chance. It’s based on the silly notion that the Maloofs were supposed to hold some press conference to let everyone know they were listening to offers….that’s just not how it’s going to work more often than not.

KJ and local investors had to know that the Maloof’s reign was going to end in one of two ways: 1) Getting some city to gift them an arena or 2) Selling. It’s not like the Maloofs called Chris Hansen and said “help us get revenge on Sacramento.” We simply had an ownership group prepared and they took charge because they were aware of the only possible outcomes here. Sac should have had the same, or at least KJ should have been rolling on it a bit more instead of only stepping on the gas after the deal was signed, not doing a whole lot when the deal was in the works. I get that the Maloofs are big dumb oafs, but the separation is in the preparation, and not planning for likely outcomes left Sac laps behind in this race.

The biggest dream in Sac is that the NBA is going to give Seattle an expansion team to destroy the sale or invoke the ‘best interest of the league’ clause and actually force out the Maloofs. I suppose if the NBA really wants to get demolished in an antitrust suit that makes sense, but something tells me that’s not the direction they’re looking to head in.

    • BarelyAble says:

The whole cook thing to me is just trying to save his legacy. There will be nothing from Ellison. He hasn’t even been contacted. Cook brought the kings there and wants to be remembered as trying to save them. IMOH

  24. James says:

There have been various reports of the Maloofs working to sell to a local buyer before finally turning back towards Hansen. If this is proven to be 100% correct, then it should be game over. I can’t see the NBA not approving the sale to Hansen because after the fact Sacramento was able to finally get a deal for the team that the Maloof’s would accept.

  25. BarelyAble says:

Must be 5k at the wizards kings game

  26. BarelyAble says:

@ChrisDaniels5: RT @kcrabienick: Phil Oates confirms to #kcra that he & dozen other #Sacramento investors met with Mark #Mastrov today about #NBAKings.

  27. Peter says:

IF Ellison was one of those investors, he’d be the headliner. Makes me think: Burkle+ Mastrov= Whales. Ellison’s out IMO.

  28. Paul Rogers says:

    Another fairly slow news day.

  29. BarelyAble says:

Cousins playing well, but can see him get a little out of focus after mistakes. Good coaching I think is key for him to maintain focus.

  30. catdawg says:

The ONLY think I am a bit apprehensive about is what is David Stern doing? I am unclear why he is holding these discussions with Sacramento after the PSA was received. I get the hypothesis that it’s because he may be setting up an eventual franchise to Sacramento after the Kings leave; just doesn’t seem “Sternian”, know what I mean? So my fear is he has this bizarre soft-spot for the smaller market teams like OKC, New Orleans, and Sacramento and he’s doing something behind the scenes to keep the Kings in Sacramento — don’t get how KJ seems to have this direct line to him.

  31. Paul Rogers says:

    Off topic…

John Schneider NOT named NFL exec of the year. Colts gm wins it. I guess most GM’s would’ve never thought of drafting Andrew Luck.

    Travesty.

  32. Yoon says:

Sifting through the rumors, I think it’s going to come down to Burkle + Mastrov, with Burkle helping to finance the arena and Mastrov bidding on the team. I’d guess they’re still in negotiations to determine how much of the pie each of them would receive in this type of arrangement. They’ll announce once they iron that part of the deal out.

As far as the whole ROFR issue, I was going to write a longer post about it, but it’s not going to be an issue. I spoke with an attorney colleague of mine that deals with more of these larger transactions, and he put all of my fears to rest regarding what the ROFR actually means.

  33. MarkS says:

    No whales harpooned yet.

    http://tinyurl.com/a9elcva

  34. Peter says:

Stern met with Burkle, and has a long standing relationship with KJ. I don’t see that as a shock. Even the discussion with Burkle was reportedly about SAC’s “future position as an NBA city”. That doesn’t sound to me like they expect the kings to stay.

  35. Peter says:

As soon as the sale is approved, it’s over for SAC. I just don’t see them considering both the sale/move in April. For the relo committee to do their vetting and make a recommendation, that takes months and relocation has to be applied for first . Sale will have to be approved before move, unless you want the relo vote happening in June/July, if that’s even possible.

  36. Mike Baker says:

I’m working on a column for tomorrow. It’s almost done, but Brent Barry keeps talking on tv, and I keep listening.

  37. trolltossin says:

Isaiah Thomas with the game winner for the Seattlemento SuperKings. I know he isnt really a good starting point guard in the NBA but he would be a solid bench guy that can contribute well off the bench. Plus I think he would embrace the sparkplug role for his hometown. Now of course if someone is willing to pay big dollars for Thomas to run the point then we may have to let that happen because in my opinion he is too much of a liability on defense defending the better point guards in this league
