RC Buford or Phil Jackson?

If you had to choose one as your President who would you go with?

I have always loved the concept of heavy investing on management and solid organizational infrastructure. Coaches, presidents and scouts are not subject to the luxury tax and have a huge impact on the roster. It will be more fun to watch a well run franchise than a couple of stars trying to dominate the franchise.

  1. Sofa King says:

Buford no question. Jackson has name recognition and success as a coach but limited front office experience where Buford has a proven track record of tacking a train wreck and building a contender from said wreckage.

  2. BarelyAble says:

I am all about Buford considering he was head of Scouting when the Spurs were starting to acquire talent for their initial championships. I know people think the Spurs are boring, but I would much rather have a boring defensive minded team that wins titles, than a flashy team that gets to the 2nd round of the playoffs. I think he has shown he can construct a team and keep them competitive long after they have peaked (in terms of age). Also, I think Phil Jackson’s age may inhibit some stability at the top.

I doubt we would get either guy, but if I had to model after someone I would say Buford.

  3. Brian Robinson says:

I also want to throw out this recent comment from TrollTossin in the last thread. BINGO! One more thing that Sacramento has to ante up to meet the bar is to show how they are prepared to impact the overall business operations and revenue capacity of the league. Hansen and Ballmer are going to be so forward facing and modern that they will change the way people gather, the way these buildings run for sports and other entertainment. They will do for sporting events what facebook did for booster clubs.

Yes the man is brilliant that is for certain. I like that you point out the NBA relationships and if he starts a new era in arena design (the inside experience) with cutting edge maybe controversial means like was talked about earlier by Myk while alluding to the NFL VP of Business Ops statements he could build an arena that is cutting edge for all sports and venues.

Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer may just revolutionize the business end of the NBA as it seems that is more than a possibility at this point.

    • John_S says:

I wonder how Microsoft centric this arena will be as will. With Windows 8, think of all the possibilities the arena has to incorporate Windows 8 into every facet of the arena experience and also bring it to your phone.

      • Heezon-fire says:

Speaking of smart phones, my wife and I were watching Andy Stanley’s church service live on a Sunday morning and they had everyone in the congregation and watching on tv download an app called Wham City. As the band played, the phones screens changed color in sync with the light show and music. It was amazing to see the phones in the audience work together and our phones at home in perfect sync also. Just think of all the possibilities of doing something similar at Sonic games! That would be a slight upgrade from organ riffs and the wave, wouldn’t you think? With the type of indoor game floor lighting like they have at The Staples Center, the darkness of the seating areas would provide a great backdrop for cellphone light shows. GO…..SONICS……GO……….SONICS! Green and yellow flashes of light! Yeah boyeeee!

    • rambisfan-rmcd says:

So this would shut the “Key Arena is just fine” folks up?..not

  4. John_S says:

Count me on the RC Buford side.

I agree with the comments above Buford’s resume as a Front Office person speaks for itself.

We know that Phil is a great coach, but we don’t know how he is as an evaluator of personnel.

I wonder how much analytics will be a part of the front office. SABRMetrics is huge in MLB and it seems like it’s picking up steam in the NBA (John Hollinger hired in Memphis as Asst VP).

    • Kryten says:

I don’t recall Phil having any success without having a superior roster. He never won anything without Michael or Kobe, did he?

      • John_S says:

He went 55-27 the year that Jordan was out and 47-35 the year Jordan came back halfway through the season. Made playoffs both years lost in the 2nd round

The team still had Pippen, Kukoc and Grant though….

      • Myk says:

Are there any coaches that have had success without a superior roster?

        • Kryten says:

          Two thoughts:
First, I want whoever can build the most talented roster, and second…
There are coaches who can take good talent and screw it up.

My vote would be for Buford if we could get him.

        • Menace says:

Not really. You need a minimum of 1-2 stars to win a championship. Ideally 3.

Its always a glass is half full or empty situation with Phil. Sure he took good jobs. But wouldnt you? Are you supposed to turn down coaching HOFers?

        • Mike Baker says:

Take a close look at the Nuggets roster. Karl has some skills getting role players to fit together and over produce.

          • Myk says:

But, what exactly are we defining as “success” then? I don’t see any evidence that Phil Jackson couldn’t do the same type of job as Karl (basically have good teams that don’t win titles) if he had lesser players.

  5. ykiki says:

My first thought is Buford, since I kind of see Jackson in the same light as Holmgren - fantastic coach, but “iffy” as a GM.

  6. Paul Rogers says:

I would say Buford as the President and Jackson as a special consultant.

  7. Paul Rogers says:

Of course, if Phil were president I doubt he’d try to function as a GM. He would hire one.

  8. Supes fan stuck in RVA says:

Debbie Downer Thiel is at it again!

Art, it’s called risk. This is what a hedge fund guy like Hansen lives with every day. He’s run the investment through more complicated financial models than you will ever understand, and has come to the conclusion that the potential reward outweighs the risk. Despite his affinity for the Sonics, he would not have made the investment if it didn’t pass that level of financial analysis for him.

You see, his ability to see beyond the risks of a project to the rewards and apply his process to achieving those rewards with the highest degree of probability possible is why he is a billionaire, and you sir, are not.

Please go back to being a Debbie Downer about things you at least understand, like how badly the Mariners suck. At least your pessimism is justified in that case.

    • Supes fan stuck in RVA says:

I posted this on his website as well. Really sick of that guy’s negative nelly act.

      • BarelyAble says:

Also, if Mr Hansen wants to buy the team then what’s it to Thiel? the only investment is from the city and that will be repaid in full no matter what (besides an act of God i suppose). And then we get more options for big time events on top of it. It isn’t like the city is buying the team so who really cares if the investment is $1 billion.

        • rambisfan-rmcd says:

Speaking of “Act of God”, a guy on a SacBee forum stated that Seattle would not be a good place for the team because unlike The Bay Area, our fault lines are most likely going to produce the “mother of all earthquakes” and we are most susceptable to tsunamis. I replied that maybe the National Guard should evacuate the ENTIRE NW region right NOW then.

    • The Original says:

One time I responded to Thiel about his ridiculously off the wall editorial he made about what was then the Seahawks Stadium. I pointed out how offbase he was by using facts. I got back the rudest, cynical response. He is not a nice person.

      • SonicFan197879 says:

Art Thiel is now a “has been” in the community since the P-I went out of business! He’s just trying to get more people to go to his ridiculas Sports Press Northwest website in which I think is a sham just to keep himself in business! I don’t go to that site at all cause there’s nothing there but B.S. material from him! If I were you Art get out of town and move to Oklahoma City because people like you and New York Vinnie (he also had no regards about the Sonics leaving) are the reasons why the Sonics left! Not just Howard Schultz, both local and state politicians, Stern, and Bennett but ignorant people like Thiel and Vinnie who brainwash people with their negativism!

        • SonicsDawg says:

And as suspected (and as I’m sure Art hoped) the Sacramento “intelligentsia” is retweeting, parroting and hyping Art’s anti-Sonics hit piece left and right this morning.

Perhaps Art hopes the Bee is hiring soon so he can get a job again. Regardless, Art’s stuck in the Argyros-Smulyan-Behring-Howie era of Seattle owners. He has failed to adjust to the new Allen-Hansen-Ballmer era.

He should just go away. Sadly, KJR/Elise continue giving this guy air time.

          • MarkS says:

Someone has to take the contrarian POV. I think by publishing the unpopular stuff Art gets more hits on his website thereby getting more money from the advertisers.

          • Myk says:

Had to laugh that when I pointed out that the point in his article that the BOG would block the move was silly and he responded by saying they’d block the sale (which he should have said in the first place)

          • rambisfan-rmcd says:

That’s a reason why American Idol has lasted as long as it has. People want to see semi washed up celebs fighting each other with their stupid opinions. Art prob thinks that if I give a differing well thought out opinion, I am still relavent.

Not sure when this was posted, but I just heard Bob on and he said that it sounds like the Maloofs have soured the Sacramento market and that is why they would leave. Snagging RC Buford from the Spurs would be a huge coup for Sonics 2.0. Without a doubt, a top notch GM is a place worth spending money. The availability of Buford is the question. Maybe he can be bought, but he seems like a Spurs lifer to me. Phil Jackson is a winner for sure, but he has no practical experience as a GM. That’s not to say he can’t do the job well, only that it would be new to him. Why not include Presti in the search? He seems about as obtainable as Buford at the moment. I can’t wait to seet the management team for our new Sonics!

    • hughc5 says:

I would love to steal presti from okc

      • trolltossin says:

I think I would too but in totality Im not sure how well it would go over. A lot of people will associate hate against Presti for being a part of the Sonics leaving though he was just doing what he was told

    • danabarrosetc says:

Screw Presti. He was complicit in the tanking of the Sonics to facilitate the move.

      • BarelyAble says:

Tanking the sonics was not part of facilitating the move. That was going to happen. Prestis moves were the proper decisions from a basketball development standpoint

        • hughc5 says:

I agree, to build it up ya gotta tear it down. One could argue that without gettin lucky and having durant be a slam dunk number 1 pick at 2 and listening to his assistant gm about westbrook he hasnt been that special. But he is the gm so he gets credit for em

          • Menace says:

He did a great job getting rid of contracts and giving them flexibility. We will need someone to do the exact same thing here.

Drafting Westbrook and Harden at the positions they were taken was far from a sure thing. Ibaka was a huge pick too.

        • danabarrosetc says:

Presti, as I understand it, was part of restricting media access to players and other decisions aimed at alienating the community from the team. He’s good at evaluating talent and certainly was under no pressure to win immediately. But he was a part of what I see as unethical practices pertaining to the Seattle club.
Anyway: I like the idea of RC Buford, not least of all because the name RC Buford is cool.

          • hughc5 says:

Buford would be my number 1 guy too. Jackson is exciting and a flashy name. But lack of front office experience concerns me a little

          • John_S says:

If your boss (Bennett) tells you to do something are you going to disobey his orders? He was doing what he was told to do. You can’t hold that against him.

          • BlueReloaded says:

Coming from the Spurs, that could have also been residue from how that franchise is run. That part doesn’t really bother my all that much.

        • Myk says:

Don’t agree with this necessarily. What really happened is that the FO had the luxury of being able to tear down the team and not care about fan interest. If they had moved immediately they probably would not have been as excited to put such a bad product on the floor

          • Menace says:

The FO absolutely has to be on board with blowing it up and tanking. But at the same time getting the trades done that result in that flexibility isnt an easy task.

Why havent more teams been able to do that? What are teams like Washington, Charlotte, Sacramento, New Orleans, and PHX doing?

          • John_S says:

Washington - Bad contracts (Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison)

Charlotte - Bad management / drafts

            Sacramento - Bad management

New Orleans - Was in win now mode with Chris Paul and ownership uncertainty

PHX - Aged quickly with questionable roster moves

          • John_S says:

That’s what I think happened, there’s other factors but that’s just off the top of my head….

          • Myk says:

They have to make their fans happy so they that prevents them from doing a full roster demolish. That is why Charlotte drafted so many Duke/UNC players. That is why Phoenix keeps trying to brining in mid level players that suck.

Of course…there is no argument that Presti didn’t also just get lucky with Durant. I promise that regardless of our GM…if we can draft a player like Durant the GM is going to look pretty good.

          • Menace says:

Absolutely. Getting Durant, a once in a lifetime type player, certainly accelerates your progression alot. No doubt. A monkey could have done that draft.

I actually take back what I said about PHX. They are doing a decent job of rebuilding. They just need to be put into a position to draft someone good. But at the same time signing guys like Michael Beasley is pretty questionable.

  21. trolltossin says:

What will make our GM/FO look good is in 2014 getting Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker. Both of those guys are the best players to be in the draft in a LONG time. I know there are guys like Kyrie Irving but I dont think anybody knew he was going to blow up like he has. He has definently hit his ceiling or will hit it soon which is a crazy good PG.

This years draft I would be more than happy with McLemore, Muhammad, Noel, Len, and to a lesser extent Zeller, Bennett, etc.

This draft is weak compared to 2014

  24. BarelyAble says:

BR says NBA is an aircraft carrier not a jetski…gotta love that analogy. Hard to turn around. Says he doesn’t see the NBA going in another direction because this group has done everything right unlike the last time. Says Sac placing all faith in KJ (for good reason and not a knock on them at all). Says he just doesn’t see the NBA going against the market forces of Seattle.

Mentioning political forces down their suggesting that they could try to sack our arena process but like would never do that. Carmichael Dave is the Softy of his city (Softy not fond of that…that was not BR that said that though).

What freaks you out that would derail this? BR says doesn’t see anything. Says Burkle would want to trade spread sheets and he isn’t the guy they need. Ellison doesn’t think he should have to overpay. Says Burkle probably won’t come out and say he will pay the $525 million and that he will build an arena that is the envy of the West Coast…says that likely won’t happen but that would be the only scary news.

Sale approved in All Star break…could even happen sooner. February 1st needs to be Sacramento coming out in full force. Relocation on April 19th…Sac would try to sue former ownership group and NBA will not tolerate them leaving and NBA will spend to defend the move.

That is the synopsis. If I misrepresented anything Brian please let me know. It was very respectful to Sacramento and all of the players.

  25. Taylor Made says:

So Brian said there’s almost nothing that could make him think this isn’t going to happen. He said the sale could be approved at the All-Star Game, or possibly even sooner. The relocation would then be approved in April.

    • Silvio says:

      Thanks guys.

It’s pretty much what I think as well.

The league will decide on the sale sometime next month, so that Hansen/Ballmer could file for relocation before March 1st.
The April meeting of the BOG will be about the vote on relocation.

Will be interesting to see what SAC will come up with these next couple of days and how the wording will be by all their guys involved.

  26. Gene Hunt says:

Let’s say the sale gets approved during the All Star break; Will there be an announcement during the break or will it be delayed until the All Star break is over with?

  27. hughc5 says:

Wow! If the sale is made official its a game over slam dunk at that point imo. Wow!

  28. bobbywilbury44 says:

Stern will ultimately make the Sacramento lawsuit-mongers back down just like he did to ours. He will tell them that the ONLY way Sacramento will ever have a shot at an NBA team again is to play nice now, build an arena and wait their turn. Just like Seattle. Mayor KJ will have is Nickels/Godden press conference moment, where he smiles as he explains how he’s done great things for Sacramento…

  29. Taylor Made says:

Softy does a pretty good Marv Albert impression.

  30. Matt Parker says:

Just guessing, but when Brian says in an earlier thread that Burkle will be news for them this week, but we’ll have bigger news on our side, and then today he says there’s rumblings that the approval could come sooner than the ASG, I immediately thought the sale could be approved this week. That would be amazing.

    • hughc5 says:

      I would pass out. Hahaha

    • BarelyAble says:

Maybe I misunderstood that comment but I thought the big news on our side was going to be how they announce Burkle. BR has been very firm on saying that the phrasing is key to these announcements. I took it as the announcement will not be entirely firm in his resolve to do everything he needs to do to secure the teams future. If it was a reference to other news then it would probably be the transfer of the $30 million coupled with some statement on that transaction. But hopefully we get something along the lines of a vote on the sale or news about a timeline.

    • Silvio says:

      I don’t think that’s going to happen.

This would make Burkle being mentioned by KJ a total waste of time and I doubt that Stern/the league(who certainly will try to look better in this one) would do that.

I think what’s more realistic is Hansen/Ballmer announcing that they’ve bought out one or maybe two of their other minority owners.

      • BarelyAble says:

That could be it. I guess I am just trying to read between the lines on everything because the return of the Sonics is so close. Maybe there is some truth to those rumors about the minority owners selling to Hansen. Also, there is a court hearing about the bankruptcy portion and we could get some news about the ROFRcopter.

        • trolltossin says:

I think they are going to announce the cutting edge interior of the building. They are going to change the viewing experience and when they do the nation will be impressed and all major sports are going to be keyed in on what we are doing with our arena.

I think Hansen and Ballmer and the people they have are going to change the way arenas are made from the inside out! Exciting stuff and no more run of the mill status quo brand new arenas. Hansen/Ballmer are going to change the arena/stadium landscape to work with the tachnological world we live in

        • Silvio says:

Well, there are lots of possibilities here.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    • Sofa King says:

Yeah that would be pretty unlikely. April is probably going to be judgement month for this whole thing. That will be post reloc deadline and the vetting process will have been done.

      • trolltossin says:

McCann Sport Law on twiiter specifically told me last Friday/Saturday that the vetting process could be done within 3 weeks. The All Star game is a little after that time frame

      • soundersfan84 says:

From what i have read once the vetting is done the BOG can vote anytime they want too.

        • trolltossin says:

That is correct. Once they get done vetting Im guessing the owners could have a conference call realistically to get it approved. They may wait for April just for PR purposes to avoid backlash from California gov’t and such

  34. kba says:

It would make more sense to have the NBA Ok the sale before the ASG. They don’t want that story taking over the game.

    • Silvio says:

      Not sure about that one.

I think this is currently big news for us and Sacramento, but nationwide no one really cares that much for it.
They care for the Lakers, Rondo’s injury etc.
They might mention sometimes that it’s too bad that SAC loses their team and that it’s nice having Seattle back but it’s not really that big news nationwide.

So I doubt that it would really trouble the league to decide during ASG or this story taking over the game.

    • BarelyAble says:

I think the news will take over either way, but maybe approving early will focus the attention (or make it even worse with the KJ presentation to BOG in April)

      • kba says:

I think KJ can offer the Moon and it still won’t be enough to change the NBA decision. Remember the NBA helped broker this deal with the Maloofs and Hansen. Why then would they turn around and change there minds? The NBA wants a team back in Seattle, Period. The train has left the station and the next stop is Seattle.

This started a little early. Here is an article linked about Mastrov meeting with the $1 million investors.

The link goes to the Times live chat with the Sac Bee reporters. But if Mastrov is meeting with the $1 million investors then could Sac’s whale possibly be Mastrov instead of Burkel? I know Mastrov doesn’t have as much money as Burkel but its interesting its Mastrov meeting with the $1 million investors instead of Burkel.

    • BarelyAble says:

This is the live chat with the Times reporters and the Bee reporters. Not sure I put much stock into what they have to say because it doesn’t seem like the front line people are on this (the people really getting the current information). I look for this to be a review of what has happened with lots of recent rumors.

Lynn Thompson really doesn’t know what she is talking about, says the Huskies haven’t been good since the Sonics left and that is why the attendance is low. Until the last two years the Huskies have been pretty good and usually sell most of the tickets. Also, gauging a college team is different than a pro team that everyone can identify with.

      • Kingdome says:

The Huskies are the defending Pac-12 champions.

The Seattle Times is stuck on stupid. Just ignore them and the few businesses wasting their money advertising with them. Just let it die already.

    • Matt Parker says:

Many meetings and presser down there with very little action. They needed to come out with a solid plan and matching offer last week. I can’t wait for this to be over with.

How local? Doesn’t sound like an Ellison but we’ll see.

FYI - I’m hearing there is no BOG meeting scheduled for NBA ASG. #NBAKings sale/relocation likely settled at meeting in April. #NBASeattle

So imagine if you will, a #Seattle regional network featuring #Sonics, #NHL, Mariners, Sounders, etc, & the possible revenue.

Apparently Marcos Brenton is taking a call on the Sac arena situation. If he posts what he hears I will relay that info. Have no idea what it is even about.

Any chance the Maloofs go into business with Howard Schultz, trapping baby fur seals or something?

    Great question on the livetalk

Just caught up on this entire thread. One request. Can we please not post random people’s Twitter comments? It makes things really confusing. Especially when the person is Tweeting at a bigger media name. Posted Twitter comments are generally reserved for news or insider info/opinion. We already got all the random fan conjecture we need with our own posters. ;)
