Off Topic - Percy Harvin to the Seahawks!

As your resident Minnesota Vikings fan I thought I’d throw this out for discussion since there are undoubtedly some passionate Seahawk fans here at SonicsRising.

Reports from John Clayton say that the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to trade (can’t happen until tomorrow IIRC) Percy Harvin to the Seahawks for a 2013 1st round pick, 2013 7th round pick, and a mid round pick next year.

As a Vikings fan, I can say that we clearly wouldn’t have made the playoffs last season without Harvin. He was THE offense the first part of the season while Adrian Peterson was still getting his feet under him. In just 9 games played, Harvin led the Vikings in both receptions and receiving yards. He was an early season candidate for discussion when talking about MVP.

When he is on his game, the guy is like watching lightening. Fascinating and faster in real life than you could imagine. We’ve had the misfortune of having to suffer through not just his migraines, but his ego as well. Many high level pro athletes have inflated egos, it comes with the territory. But Percy Harvin has been a bit above the norm in that category.

I desperately hope the trade works out for both teams. The Vikings are beyond deficient in wide receivers. While I don’t know for certain, they may have been the worst group of receivers in the NFL last season when you subtract Harvin. So the loss is significant for the Vikings. The loss is exacerbated by the special teams plays Harvin makes with his returns. He makes good decisions with the ball, and is secure with the ball on kickoffs, which combined with blazing speed makes him quite the weapon on kick returns.

Will I miss his moody and erratic behavior? Not at all. But I’m afraid I will miss his talent. I’ll be watching the NFL draft much closer now (and will hold out hope that the Vikings will replace Harvin with Mike Wallace from Pittsburg…) because we do not have what we need to be competitive in the NFL next year without a significant improvement in the passing game. Otherwise Adrian Peterson will see 8 men boxes on every single down next year.

  1. As another Minnesota resident, native Seattleite, and Seahawks(/Sonics) fan, I am thrilled for fellow Hawks fans that Percy is joining the team. He is… complicated. But he’s a player you watch closely whenever he’s on the field because something amazing might happen. A million things could go wrong, of course, but combined with Wilson and Lynch he will make games very exciting.

  2. I’m excited for the few snaps a game where Wilson, Lynch and Harvin is the backfield… This will be the last year Darrell Bevell spends as an OC.

  3. Sometimes a player with baggage needs a change of scenery. And winning cures alot of issues. Not to say that Minnesota is a bad place to play at all. But the Harvin/Minnesota relationship had to come to an end. The feeling was probably mutual.

Marshawn Lynch worked out pretty good for us. Pretty excited to see what this kid can do with a good QB

  4. Pete Carroll has just got himself the NFL version of his Lendale White and Reggie Bush tandem. Thunder and Lightning. This will open up the entire offense. Now they need to get some DL and maybe a studly DE that has a year or two left like Freeney, Abraham, etc. They still have cap space and it will make our dynamic offense turn into an elite offense as long as he is healthy.

Russell Wilson has to be excited with the offense he has around him.

  5. This is a big time gamble that can pay off BIG time NOW or it can not work out in coming years esp w the cap. If it doesn’t the Hawks are banking that it doesn’t set things back TOO bad. His contract will eat up a big chuck of flexibility when it comes time to deal with the Richard Shermans etc. This is the biggest risk.
They are going for it NOW!! I hope it works. It think it will. If it does..WOW!!

True. But I will gladly cross that bridge when we come to it. Having too much talent generally isnt something we are used to dealing with.

  7. A friend of mine is an artist. He was just commissioned to do a mural project across from Key Arena with a Sonics flag.

  8. Too bad that Sonics flag wasn’t across the street from Starf#cks and in-site of the POS.

  9. Adrian Peterson‏@AdrianPeterson

The best all around player I ever seen or you’ll ever see! Goes to Seattle! I feel like I just got kicked in the stomach. Several times!!!

Wow quite a statement from one of the best RB’s of this era or any era for that matter

  10. We’ll see how this works out for both teams. This seems to help the Seahawks offense, but arguably their biggest problem by the end of the season was the defensive line play (both pass rush and stopping the run). Schneider and Carroll have mostly built the defense through the draft, so we’ll see how much they miss those picks.

  11. (Of course, part of the problem in the Atlanta game was the loss of Chris Clemons, and Jason Jones had already gotten hurt earlier in the year. But you can’t count on everyone staying healthy anyway.)

  12. The guy played well with Bevil, Favre loved him and Rice loves it. A coworker of mine is from Minnesota and says Frazier more the problem here. I think Seattle took a huge step towards a championship today!

  13. And hasn’t Harvin had issues staying on the field?

I am a migraine sufferer and they are no joke. A few years ago a migraine cost me six months of my life. I think Brian remembers that medical drama. It sucked for me and my now wife.

So, hopefully he has a handle on those.

  14. Sonics Topic- David Aldridge’s take on the newest Stern comments with an ex-NBA eecutives take on how this will be deciphered assuming Sacramento comes up with what they need to do to be competitive. Its half way down the page.

  15. It’s been pretty overblown. I believe he only missed 2 games due this.

  16. They determined that Harvin’s was related to sleep apnea and hasn’t had one in a couple of years.

  17. Living in Minnesota, Harvin’s issue with the team is their un imaginative offense and he let Frasier and the OC know about it.

  18. That’s what my Minnesota co-worker was saying. I know when Favre was there he started doing what he wanted. Carroll lets guys play. I think Harvin will fit in nicely here.

I don’t like where it says the NBA could approve sale but wouldn’t approve relocation. If i was hansen i would be going after the league for anti trust imo.

    Zero chance of that.

  22. I think it’s great the Hawks got Harvin, but a first round pick (and more)?
I mean, the 9ers just got Boldin for a SIX.
Seems a tad expensive, don’t it?

One is a 24 year old elite talent, the other is 32 years old and more closely resembles a TE than a WR these days whose team was going to cut him.

    Initiative 502 can handle that

  25. Sean: Zero chance of that.

It could happen. But its highly unlikely. It just wouldnt make any sense at all.

  26. I don’t know if this makes me feel better or worse. If Seattle is screwed again, there’s a whole lot of us that will be done with them. I’m certainly not going to root for Portland.

I dont think we have any glaring holes at all. I would agree that a weakness is pass rush……but there is plenty of offseason to address that through FA or the draft.

  28. Let me state that there is a better chance that the NBA awards each member of the SonicsRising blogosphere a perosnal expansion team than a scenario where Hansen is sold the team and he is not able to move it into Seattle.

This isn’t a 0% chance it is some sort of negative percent chance. If Hansen wants the team in Seattle he can have the team in Seattle…just ask Al Davis

  29. Between the Sonics coming back, the Seahawks looking like a possible Super Bowl contender and the Mariners actually trying to look like a baseball team, this could be one awesome sports year for Seattle fans.

  30. Menace: It could happen. But its highly unlikely. It just wouldnt make any sense at all.

Well, I guess it’s theoretically possible like an asteroid hitting Seattle tomorrow, but I can’t think of a single reason or even a general train of thought that would inspire or justify such a maneuver.

  31. Sounders FC made a big time acquisition as well in Striker Obafemi Martins. Goal Scorer from elite level soccer programs in Europe. Played for Inter Milan among others. Pairing him with Eddie Johnson will make them crazy good as well. Seattle Sports outlook is very bright

  32. Sean: One is a 24 year old elite talent, the other is 32 years old and more closely resembles a TE than a WR these days whose team was going to cut him.

I get what you’re saying, but don’t poo poo my comparison. Harvin’s career high for TD receptions in a season is 6. Six. Boldin had 4 in the post-season alone last year.

We can agree that Harvin has elite POTENTIAL. No doubt. But players with elite PERFORMANCE don’t have a career high of 6 TDs in a season. Those are Pierre Garcon stats. We trade a 1st rounder for Garcon?

  33. The notion that they would approve the sale to Hansen but deny relocation is pretty stupid. They’d just end up with an owner losing money hand over fist as he files for relocation every year. It would force Hansen to either pull a Clay Bennett or, since the value of the team would plummet with no possibility of relocation, sell for a huge loss.

    Stupid.

They might have a career high of 6 TDs when your QB is Christian Ponder.

    Another take…

    Seattle SuperSonics ‏@BringBackSonics
Chris Daniels on 710 ESPN just said that all signs point to the Kings heading to Seattle when the BOG decision is made in the next few weeks

I was just saying that to a friend. Seattle gets Harvin and Martins on the same day. A Sonics announcement would make this a stellar week for Seattle sports!!!

Could I beat Michael Jordan in a game of one on one? Its possible.

    Would it ever happen? Never.

IMO the chances of that are remote. A 3/4 majority vote required for the sale, but only a simple majority required for the relocation. 15 owners would have to oppose for that to happen.

  41. Don’t want to get the rep as a Harvin hater. Not the case. Just seems like a lot to give up, that’s all. A first and a seventh.

Last time Minnesota sent a receiver away for a first and a seventh it was a disgruntled receiver named Randy Moss who was coming off a down year where he only played 13 games (and caught 13 TDs).

It is a lot to give up. But I guess it all depends on the 1st rounder. I think the bust % is around 50%. Maybe less with Schneider……..but I dont think you really get a game changer that late in the first round. Not this year anyway.

Truth. And the reason why I won’t lose sleep over any of it.
Hell let’s be honest, I’m just trying to find something to distract me from the evil Sac-Sonics news cycle for a minute or two…

  44. This makes me feel better! Stern can retire righting the Seattle wrong, Clay can escape the Zombie Sonic apocalypse and KJ can stop harpooning sea life.

Ye ask and ye shall receive

  47. Before we get all worked up, could it just be something along the lines of it being past whatever board review and that they are now applying for or were granted the master use permit or whatever they’ve been talking about?

I mean, it sounds like it could just be a procedural type symbolically monumental step type deal.

  48. Let’s play guess the announcement.

I say it’s something about the uniforms or logos.

  49. He could say the deal is being approved.

He could say he’s pulling out of the deal.

Or it could be something about the arena or the uniforms.

    Maybe something NHL-related?

    Maybe his wife’s pregnant.

  50. I’m guessing it’s something EXTREMELY small but big news sure would be nice lol

That would be 15 people who would risk having a potential relocation vote go against them in the future.

  52. Spronsorships, Master Use Permit,, Aaron Bruski sucks donkey %&^!, and CMD is the donkey

  53. I’d love for it to be something related to the Sonics history being given back.

There’s no way it’s going to be something along the lines of the deal being completely done, NBA wouldn’t have it get announced that way, I can’t imagine.

    Temper your expectations, people!

  54. I will say this that the arena designs and such he didnt really play up right? Especially the newest one on Feb. 26th….that was just posted correct?

Maybe its something big but doubt it has to do with the team but arena, sponsors, how awesome Seattle is

  55. The real question is how will Sactown spin Hansen’s announcement in favor of them?

  56. I’m guessing it’s arena-related. But I’m with Sean on this… would LOVE it if it was about getting our history back. There’s no way it’s gonna be about the team purchase.

  57. Pure speculation on my part, but my guess is that this announcement will go something like the following…

“In order to make this process fair and competitive for our competition in Sacramento, we have decided to decrease our offer by $100 million.”

  58. history isnt an issue. We will have shared history via the settlement. Thats always been the case.

  59. Well if Hansen announces Sponsors the Sacramento faithful will say….see Hansen is nervous and getting desperate because he is breaking his silence

  60. Paul Rogers:

That agreement was based on Seattle getting an expansion team in 5 years. Have no idea what the terms are for a relocated team or if there even are any terms.

  63. How come no one has pointed out how “strange” it is that there is a post on a Sonics site about something that happened by another Seahawks team? As a single tv household I am only capable of following one team. Who are these Seahawks you are talking about and what is a Percy Harvin?
