#NBA Statement On Proposed Sale Of The Sacramento #Kings To A Seattle Group.
“The NBA received an executed Purchase and Sale Agreement for the transfer of a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family to an investor group led by Christopher Hansen. The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board’s committee process for review.” 3 minutes ago
Im assuming the NBA Board Of Govenors committee is the same as NBA Relocation Committee.
Relocation committee will review and then present to the owners. It is separate but from reports we know relocation committee has been briefed
@ChrisDaniels5: BREAKING: Gavin Maloof says “We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for fans..”
@ChrisDaniels5: BREAKING: Maloof: “We would also like (to) thanks Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation….” #nbakings
@ChrisDaniels5: BREAKING: Gavin Maloof: “Chris will be a great steward for the franchise”. #NBAKings
@ChrisDaniels5: I was told by a high level league source that other NBA Owners were indeed briefed on terms of sale over the weekend. #NBAKings
The Maloofs have now released confirmation statement. See Chris Daniels tweets from previous thread.
I posted this toward the end of the previous thread, but I think it needs repeating…
Guys I know the NBA could still technically screw this up and reject the sale, but I don’t think it will.
Even with that possibility, however, we should take some time to celebrate and enjoy this. For the first time since Schultz sold the team, we have a Seattle ownership group with a piece of paper that says they own the team, which they intend to move to Seattle NEXT YEAR. In other words, since the first time since Schultz sold, WE HAVE LEVERAGE.
How huge is that? Freaking huge is how huge.
I honestly don’t know how the NBA can reject this and, if they do, I honestly don’t know how they can do so without an expansion guarantee.
so freakin huge. OMG.
@sonicsarena: #SonicsArena group has finalized agreement to purchase controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise. http://t.co/nxF2AUID
The party that have stopped deals in the past, the Maloofs, have let go. They will not be the folks stopping this, no Magoofing around.
Ugh, I never know there’s a new thread until I’m posting to myself. I posted Chris’s announcement in the last thread.
BOOM!!!
Boom indeed.
Blamm!!!
Here we go!! We’re coming back!!
Somebody knows when is the BOG’s meeting??
In April I think…
So Stern will postpone the deadline, or will we have to stay a year in Sac??
No way they play in Sacramento next year unless the sale is rejected.
I would think that the BOG must approve the sale before March 1, since that’s the deadline to file for relocation.
next BOG meeting is during the all star week. I assume sale approved in feb reloc approved in apirl.
Exactly. We could be waiting another month+ on the approval of this, correct?
It wouldn’t make sense to let KJ speak if they’ve already approved the sale.
I would imagine that it will be approved during the next league meetings, which are in February I believe.
I’ve been quietly optimistic from the very beginning. But now I need to know where to buy season tickets!
I don’t think the deadline will be postponed, but he is still giving KJ an opportunity to present his deal/ownership group/arena package to the BOG.
That leaves me a bit apprehensive. Think the league will wait to approve the sale until KJ presents?
I would think final approval would be after that. Otherwise what would be the point of him addressing the NBA? I’m not sweating it though.
Honestly, I don’t think it matters anymore what Sacramento puts together. It’s nearly impossible to imagine the BOG rejecting this sale.
This is really exciting. I just wish we could fast-forward past all the drama that’s to come regarding the move and just get on to talking hoops!
Why can’t we talk hoops now? Hansen can’t. But why can’t we?
We should enjoy this phase. We have LEVERAGE!!!
Yes, we do. But as long as KJ and Sacto are fighting to save the Kings, I can’t allow myself to fully relax and look forward. And I know it’s likely a losing battle and that this thing will ultimately go through. But as long as that stuff is hanging over our heads, and as long as Sacto-related tweets keep making the rounds, I’m going to have a hard time ignoring that stuff. There is going to be a lot of noise made by KJ in the coming weeks/months. A LOT. Not to take any credit away from him. Good on him. But it does keep me from going full on Sonics 2.0 mode.
need season tickets IMMEDIATELY!
So we have rumors now that Phil Jackson may be involved in the front office. We have rumors that Larry Bird could be involved. We have rumors that San Antonio’s GM could be pursued as well.
Do we like these names? Should we go this route or the sentimental one? IE Lenny as team president and Nate as coach?
I say sentiment is nice as long as it fits with the overall vision of the team. Does Nate fit that? I don’t know. What I do know is I want a front office that will build a solid organization.
Sentiment doesn’t bring you a winner. You hire the best available guys regardless if they have Sonic ties or not.
I agree with John on this one. Get the best available. Look deep.
Yes, best talent available should be the only consideration
We need another rally ASAP. I wasn’t able to make it to the last one, work kept me from going.
When everything is final final and 100%, I say we throw a SOS/SonicsCentral welcome back party. This has been such a long journey. From SOS to political hearings to losing the team to more political hearings to now, it’s really been a long, crazy ride. I’ve said it before that the fight and all the community bonding at the rallies and hearings is really going to go a long way in creating an even bigger bond between the fans and this team. This place has been a support group for all of us through it all. We deserve to all get together and celebrate. Also is a must to do a SonicsRising group for a game early on in the season.
yes
Yes - - - I still feel like celebrating now. I know it’s not a “done” deal, but pinch me. Does anybody have a defined timeline of how this will proceed ?
March Madness is going to mean so much more to me this year!
Who to draft?
Mmmm?
I never liked Phil when he coached the Bulls or Lakers, but his name just adds some flair and sense that things are going to be nothing but first class here in Seattle.
Nate back as coach, no question. GP as assistant. I heard breaking news last night Squatch was seen around the fountain at Seattle Center.
Chris needs to try his best to get KC back with Marques Johnson doing play by play. That would make my dreams come true.
KC to me is a no brainer. I think that’s a part of why he hasn’t been on 710 much of late. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris hasn’t already signed him up. And if they could get Marques Johnson back, oh man would that be sweet.
yes to KC, no to all the rest. Let’s get the best available and build toward the championship.
Yeah, I bet KC is already on board. - - - A no-brainer. Teamed with MJ again, WOW !! So sweet if we can pull that off.
So will the sale and relocation be voted on at the same time or different?
Hmm opening up a celebration soda or apple cider or save the apple cider for post sale/relocation approval
I believe that KC is a lock. My guess is that he is teamed with Brent Barry. The faces of the franchise will be Phil Jackson, KC and Bones and Nate McMillan.
WOW. That would get people excited.
You could get pj to coach again and right now i would still be excited. Hahaha
Brent would be my next choice after Marques. Bone would be very entertaining.
It just wouldn’t feel like the Supes were back if Kevin wasn’t calling games.
KC and Bones would be awesome!
“Two in the cake! And one in the pudding! Brent Barry with another shocker!”
Still can’t believe KC got away with that for as long as he did. And was disappointed it wasn’t included in his talking bobble head doll.
Best KC line of all time. I just traded e-mails with him and he says he’s off to call the Boston/Miami game next weekend “I’ve got to stay sharp and ready.”

GP and Shawn’s Jersey’s go up on opening night!
I would love KC with Bones. I would prefer KC with Marques Johnson.
But let me introduce a wildcard. How about KC with Sean Kemp? He is GREAT on the radio, is a great story teller, and I think I heard him do commentary for a college game last year.
*Shawn
Sheesh. Somebody slap me.
slap!
Kong 6/16 is saying next BOG meeting is April 18th
Dudes- it seems like Woj is a super established reporter that garners must respect for the accuracy of his reporting from nearly everyone connected to the NBA. He went on the record early with his sources last week that the sale was essentially finalized, and that got us super high on the roller coaster yet set off this recent flurry of scrambling by Sacto and because no announcement was given by Maloof/Hansen/NBA, all of us plummeted. Obviously with this morning’s official release, we have shot right back up the roller coaster.
Well, Woj has again gone on record, that he has a source that says the league will unanimously approve the sale and relocation as they have already been briefed on the sale and Hansen’s plan. Seems like when Woj puts out such a bold statement, it usually is the case… This is really happening!!!
sonicsarena.com has taken down their announcement
never mind, it’s back
Softy said earlier the site crashed. Crazy!
I am dancing in my kitchen whilest making bacon and eggs. Is that weird?
a bit. :) no, it’s all good.
One more thought re: BOGs
I think the national perspective (for better or worse) is that the sympathy with the average NBA fan is happiness to return the Sonics to Seattle, rather than sadness of Sacramento losing the Kings. Again, not placing judgement on this, or endorsing this point of view, but when you talk to folks in DC or NY or Bos or Chicago, they just don’t know too much about Sacramento.
So, you could view it that there is one city out there that is really legitimately lacking an NBA presence: Seattle. If the Kings leave for Seattle, then there is no true black hole in the league without a team in Sacramento. The market worked pretty well, and was great while it lasted, but there is no cultural void (in the nat’l perspective). So, this Seattle market will always loom as a real threat to the rest of the lower-mid level cities because of it’s cultural importance, and noticeable void, but now with the aggressive and well funded Hansen/Ballmer/Nordstrom group committed to the region, the threa-level has gone up significantly.
So, cities like Indianapolis (Chair, right?), Milwaukee, Memphis, Charlotte and Minneapolis, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Orlando (among others), should be jumping at the chance to sacrifice the Kings (a team with an uncertain recent past, arena mess, and no real significance to the greater NBA cultural narrative- again don’t mean to be harsh on this), to SAVE their own cities. At some point, NBA back to a major metro like Seattle is inevitable, so better it the Kings than their own franchises as they look for new buyers and try top make agreements to ensure non-relocation (like in Milwaukee).
Thoughts? Or am I reading too deep into this?

Matt Steinmetz@MSteinmetzCSN
I’m told Maloofs shopped deal to Larry Ellison (of course they did) but Ellison said no to the $525 figure.
This is likely what Aldridge referenced.
Was this before or after everyone wised up and found out that 525m was an evaluation? I be;lieve the actual price is $341M.
It could be that Ellison disagreed with the valuation of the franchise at $525 million, so he felt that 65% of that was still too much.
Great news day! Things will only get better from here.
I’m in the studio today, back to work…
good man!
Kings playing Hornets right now on NBA TV (Comcast Channel 441)
Free preview isn’t working for me…just getting a black screen.
It appears to be working now.
Can I just say this….it’s a national holiday an NO continues to have poor attendance. It looks quite pathetic. Can anyone please explain to me why staying in NO is a good business move for the NBA? No offense to NO, but damn it continues to look deserted in that arena despite the fact fans know the Hornets are staying in town for years to come.
Wow the crowd in NO is non existent, lots of empty seats.
They’re having Manti Te’o girlfriend day at the arena lol
New Orleans is the team that should’ve moved. Not Sacramento.
I completely agree EJ. If you asked me two years ago which team I thought we would have the best shot at, it would have been NO.
Yup, Hornets should have gone to OKC, Sonics come home and SAC keeps their team. That would be fair and just !!
Not working for me. But I am getting NHL center ice for some reason. Comcast must have hit the wrong switch.
The non HD channel works…441. 440 is HD and doesn’t work. Try that?
Different channels in Baltimore. Oh well
In this SacBee article,
http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/21/5128586/seattle-deal-for-kings-reported.html
Kings fans would like for us to take Grant Napier off their hands as part of the deal of the sale. Nut uh, don’t think so. KC has had this job on lock ever since the Sonics left!
No dice on taking Napier, KC has this job.
To Napier: “That position has already been filled from within the organization. Thank you for your interest.” KC will always have that seat as long as he wants it. I sure hope the Sonics broadcast on KJR again. Don’t know how that works with his current gig on ESPN - - - I haven’t heard him much lately.
I would assume he has an out clause that allows him out of his contract to take a play by play position with a team.
It’s different now since he’s working for an ESPN affiliate and doing play by play for ESPN.
I sure hope that the Sonics are on KJR. If you compare the two (KJR and ESPN) KJR has been all over this issue and has continued to be engaged on the topic whereas ESPN has left it on the back burner until now.
I’m hoping that KJR becomes the official radio station of the Sonics again.
He’s hardly on his ESPN show…it seems like that time slot has been given to Jim Moore.
And I’m with you Gene, KJR should be the home of the new Sonics. Before Bennett moved them to that conservative talk radio am station, it was the home of the Sonics.
They have been so supportive of Chris Hansen’s efforts over the last year. More so than 710 if you ask me.
Grant’s not very good.
When KC turned down moving with OKC and doing play by play for them to stay in town he sealed his ticket for getting the job and really there’s no comparison between who you can get and KC.
Shawn Kemp is coming up on Softy’s show in just a couple minutes
He’s coming on now
Softy is uncharacteristically cautious today…either he’s not sure how to put his emotions into words or he’s worried about jumping the gun like he did two weeks ago when it was nothing but rumors.
He got me all hyped up two weeks ago, only to get the wind out of my sails.
I think softy is waiting for BOG approval of sale and reloc before he gets into overly excited.
He got stupid excited the day the Woj report came out. Given all the ups and downs that followed, I think he learned his lesson. That, and he’s a Seattle sports fan. We are always fearing being
let down.
Chris Daniels @ChrisDaniels5
Just interviewed Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn who said he wished expansion was possibility, but Mayors don’t make the rules. #NBAKings
Chris Daniels @ChrisDaniels5
McGinn, who says he voted FOR I-91, says the #SeattleArena deal IS I-91 compliant. Recently filed lawsuit says it isn’t. #SeattleArena
Chris Daniels @ChrisDaniels5
Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess suggested to me that, if needed, Seattle could exempt new franchise from I-91, as it did w/WNBA Storm
Yea Seattle can exempt the franchise from I-91 since its been 2 years but LOL at the twitter comment reply to the idea of exempting the franchise from I-91 calling it another law violation.
So rc Buford and Phil Jackson yes to both?
Fetal Sonics getting blown out in New Orleans
WOW - Even the other WA is celebrating today with a parade !! How nice of them :)
Does anyone have a timeline for the process ? Has the NBA announced this ? - - - I guess I’m still trying understand how the KJ/Sac presentation figures in.
So I’m listening to Brock and Salk podcasts from this morning. They had some good discussion and brought Calabro in, but this is what floors me. Other than an opening teaser, they didn’t START discussing it until about 45 minutes into the show.
THIS is why KJR, which has been on it for the most part since 6am, should be the official station.
No Brainer - - - KJR should be official station !! Maybe we should start a petition from the fans !!
To be honest, I don’t think we’ll have to.
Have you noticed that every time Hansen has made a radio announcement it has been on KJR? Have you noticed that every announcement is preceded the day before by Mitch Levy tweets?
I think they will definitely be the official station. Partially due to nostalgia. Partially due to a relationship between Levy and Ballmer. Partially due to the fact that ESPN is already the official station of the Mariners and Seahawks.
I would also be willing to wager that Calabro has an out clause in his ESPN contract.
I will co-sign this. KJR>710
Really? That’s pathetic. Thankfully I’ve kept the dial on KJR all morning.
It is pathetic. To their credit, however, they did have Calabro on, who sounded more positive than I’ve heard from him since the team left.
