Relax

I can only say it so many times. People need to understand what a small fraction of real happenings go through the media and how meaningless a lot of the comments are.

I don’t know that the Sacramento thing is going to happen or if it is not going to happen. I do know that reacting to every twitter comment with a massive emotional swing is not the right thing to do.

Our guys are not going to comment. They are operating below the radar. I know you all wish they could but that isn’t how they’ve gotten this far. Waging a media/PR war is not a sign of strength or weakness just a difference in strategy. Don’t fall for it.

I don’t personally care if its the kings, I just want to know we wont get shut out. I can wait all 5 years if need be. Milwaukee is pretty much off limits now with their new lease, a month wont be enough time to buy and move them. so If not the Kings, we better hope for the Pacers or expansion. hawks and bobcats seem unlikely with ATL’s lease running to 2023 and MJ owning the bobcats.

Good advice Brian and worth repeating as many times as we’ve repeated it. This is why riding the rollercoaster can be fun, but ultimately it’s a pointless exercise in stress … Like I said in the original thread between the actual announcement every half-truth, non-truth and in between gets reported or Twittered, and too many people here keep freaking the f*ck out over minutae from other people who may or may not have real info on the story.

I believe it’s all going to work out in the end. The NBA is giving KJ and the other players in the market enough time to save face & say they made a good faith effort to do something. It’s really not much more complicated than that. In the end this is the NBA. Money talks. Who’s got more money? Exactly.

  3. Reichly says:

People! Twitter is NOT news. It amounts to rumors. Wait for the real news. If it isn’t coming out today, find something to do. Speculating and worrying over every tweet is going to give you fits!

Do you see CH tweeting? Nope!

Jlv’s sources deep in the Kings organization are saying that the Kings will stay in Sacramento. Seattle will lose the war against Sacramento.

Good grief this is gonna be a long couple months.

    • soundersfan84 says:

so they think key to keeping team just give more money and buy the maloofs share of the team.

      • traven says:

The Maloofs are reported to have 53% of the team, so with a team valued at 525 million dollars, the Maloofs’ would get 278.25 million dollars for their 53%. The Kings’ debt to Sacramento came with the Kings, when the Maloofs bought the Kings, so I am not clear if the Maloofs owe the money, or if the Kings owe the money. I would think that the debt would be owed by the team, but I am not sure.

  6. 3InTheKey says:

I’m just going with the ‘If Chris Daniels didn’t say it, it isn’t true’ philosophy!

  7. SpanishGlove says:

Has changed anything from yesterday? No. Hansen and the Maloofs are still quiet and we still can’t believe a single word from Sacramento’s medias. So let’s relax and wait because after the All Star we will have a team.

  8. Peter says:

Chris did say the arena is not tied to getting the kings, and that a team is “inevitable”. so if expansion isn’t an option, he must have his sights on other teams as well. of course i’m not convinced expansion won’t be an option 4-5 years from now.

the sactown royalty guys are just wishing out loud, and i don’t say that critically, but they’re full of the “now is the time to rally around for our team, our town, our mayor,” and so forth. . . thing is, this isn’t about which fans love ‘their’ team most and who really, really, really and truly wants their team the most.

go thru a franchise relocation and you learn how the league really works, right quick.

  11. Heezon-fire says:

Is it just me or does David Stern’s face in Chris Daniels report look strikingly similar to his face back when he was trying to answer questions about the Sonics theft. I know he’s obviously hiding information because he has to, but he just has that look like he knows some people would be very angry at him if they new what is really going on.

  12. kinsesu says:

Perhaps the KJ/Sac BOG “proposal presentation bid” is just posturing for KJ and the NBA so they publicly appear “to have exhausted every angle” before the sale to the Hansen/Balmer group.
Perhaps it is not posturing, but a serious competitive bid will be presented to BOG/relocation committee The reality is we don’t know.
Again, my fear is KJ does put together a creative & competitive proposal/bid. Yes, it is the Maloof’s controlling % to sell. Obviously, they want & need the most $$ they can get. If Maloof’s net $$ in a Sac bid are comparable to the Hansen/Balmer offer, I just can’t see the NBA letting Sac leave - - it would be a PR “black eye” not only for the NBA, but for all pro sports teams.

    • soundersfan84 says:

if thats the case then whats to stop from that happening again from the next team hansen targets than the next team to the point of the arena deal expires and no team no arena etc.

  13. 79 Sonics Forever says:

If Chris and the Maloofs come to an agreement it will not be easy for the BOGs to overturn. KJ may be able to present but at the end of the day it will come to a vote of the BOGs. If they turn down Hansens deal it will open up a lot of legal questions. It also may limit there own ability to move or sell their teams in the future.

Step one lets get the deal done

  14. hughc5 says:

Is there any doubt stern is pulling strings behind the scenes and this is gonna go the way he wants it too? The more i think about it the more i think this is all pr and posturing with kj and the bog. Theres no way the league forces the maloofs to take a lesser offer then balmer and hansen are offering.

  15. rambisfan-rmcd says:

I think Hansen and Maloofs have had a deal in principle and Stern has known much longer than most people imagine. Months maybe.

  16. kinsesu says:

I’m not talking about a “lesser” offer - - - just a “comparable offer”. The City of Sac has continued to be supportive with the arena financing package. Even though it is the Maloof’s shares to sell, the NBA and all professional sports teams need to be a good business partner of their local govs because they are always asking for taxpayer help. That’s the bigger picture here. Hey, I want my Sonics back just as much as anybody here. I’m just trying to step back and take a more global look at this. I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed that KJ/Sac come up short. As we all should.

    • soundersfan84 says:

      kinsesu,

The issue that i have is we HAVE to get a team to see the arena built. I don’t like that requirement but it is what it is. If no Kings i have no idea what the next target maybe assuming it won’t end up with a similar ending where the team stays.

The quicker we get a NBA team the quicker we will be in position for a NHL team. If we have to wait for the next available team that will delay the arrival of the NHL team. My concern is the deal will expire before we get a NBA team.

  17. James says:

It does make sense. If they had a deal, why would they be in any hurry to make an announcement? They still want to sell tickets after all. Now that the cat has been let out of the bag so to speak, Sacramento has to save face and do what they have to do. In the meantime, the deal will appear hanging in the balance until its time to file for relocation. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

  18. Mike Baker says:

Sacramento has to do everything it can to preserve itself as a major league city as it loses its only major league franchise.
Stern knows that Sacramento played ball with the league, did all the right things, and got screwed.
So, he is going to give them a stage to make the case to be the next big city wanting a franchise, and they hope, take the place of Seattle’s current spot.

The league will be happy to have the Maloofs gone, Hansen, Ballmer, and the Nordstroms, as owners.
They can then turn around and leverage Sacramento against the next municipality struggling to build an arena.

Bennett really fucked up, he failed to get a new arena in either market, walking away from a remodel in Seattle for a remodel in OKC. When the taxes run out, and the remodel has a dozen years wear, he’s right back to square one.

    And so it goes.

  19. Numbers Guy1984 says:

Call me old school, or just behind the times but social media pisses me off. Facebook kills productivity and promotes narcissism. I really wish twitter didn’t exist, but now you have to have it to obtain breaking news real-time (example #1 Chris Daniels). People putting a # in front of words drives me absolutely crazy and is IMHO an entirely a stupid concept. Despite these opinions, I cannot help but wonder what would have happened in 2007/2008 if social media was around. Watching how Sacramento has rallied the community around the Kings through social media is really inspiring, and frankly I think it is one of the few things giving the Kings a glimmer of hope at staying in Sacramento. If we had these tools five years ago, I have to think a different result could have been created.

    • kinsesu says:

If the Kings stay in Sac, it’ll be because of the $$ - not social media.

      • Numbers Guy1984 says:

Correct, but social media will have played a HUGE part in rallying the support of local wealth to make a difference.

        • kinsesu says:

Mmmmm, respectfully disagree. The “local wealth” would have probably been called by telephone and face-to-face meetings with KJ once the story leaked that the MaGoof’s were in negotiations with the Hansen. Just my 2 cents.

          • Mike Baker says:

Google “art Theil” and “sonics” and “landed gentry” to see Art begging local wealthy people to step up to save the Sonics. No twitter, no Facebook, but a newspaper columnist.

It’s not the medium but the willingness of the local wealthy folks to chose to spend their money on Basketball.

  20. Omar says:

Social networking also helped bring thousands together for SonicsArena functions and events.

But I feel you, I’m old school myself. Facebook-free and Twitterless.

  21. Paul Rogers says:

    Relaxing is against my religion.

    • kinsesu says:

      I”ll second that.

The Hawks season was such a great ride with a sucker punch ending. Now that’s is over - I’m back to this obsessive roller coaster ride and hoping it doesn’t end with another sucker punch.

  22. Sonicsman says:

It still humor’s me that Sac fans (Mayor KJ) believe that their offer can be less because you subtract the relocation fee and the $77 million loan to the city. This is not necessarily true. First off, why would the Maloofs take $30 mill less to pay Hansens’ relocation fee? They could care less what happens to the team once they get paid. You don’t sell your house and then pay the moving expenses for the buyer! As for the debt owed to the city, people are forgetting that the Kings own the building and the land that Sleep train arena is on. They could simply sell or deed over the land to the city to pay off the loan. They are going to use as much leverage as they can. So, I know I am stretching here but in theory Hansen/Ballmer could be at $525 million without the relocation fee or the debt even being a factor. This is it for the Maloofs in the NBA so they are going to squeeze out every penny they can. Anyone who thinks that they will cut a local buyer a break just to try to keep the team in Sacramento is living in fantasy land. Another thing I wonder is if Hansen/Ballmer are willing to go above $525 million to get this done??? What is the highest they will go before it is suddenly not worth it? So many questions, so little answers.

  23. charliesonic says:

sonicsman, i think you are right, although we must be sympathetic to sacramento fans, who are going through a portion of the learning curve that we know all too well. . .

agree here w/mr. baker, as well — remember that one motive driving stern and the owners is ‘get a new arena whenever and wherever possible.’ so what stern wants, i think, is two new arenas in seattle and sacramento. it’s very helpful to have a clear example of what happens to naughty cities who refuse to build on demand, which is why the occasional relo is so vital, for warning purposes.

deals like this get hashed out in corporate boardrooms. when the browns moved, the deal was negotiated on al lerner’s private plane. . . the fans weigh in in parallel or after the fact, hoping to create enough buzz to affect the aftermath.

just watch — seattle and sacramento are serving the league’s purposes. we’ll wind up with a team/arena, and they will, too. mission accomplished at several levels.

    • John_S says:

The thing about the ‘local owner’ aspect that Sacramento has been talking about is that the prospective buyers do not have the the capital to buy a team and help finance a building so KJ has to solicit our of area people from LA to be a part of the prospective ownership group.

There will be a local presence in the ownership group but the bulk of the money in their ownership group will be coming from out of town people.

It’s interesting that the narrative coming from Sacramento is constantly changing.

  24. Brainfreeze says:

When’s the deadline to file for relocation?

My guess is they’ll wait and give just enough time to announce the sale and have it approved, before filing to relocate. After the sale all the other stuff has already been approved behind closed doors.
